Fedora :: What Is The Cdrecord Original Fork Status
Feb 10, 2010
I realize the information found here is potentially biased, but it made me curious where Fedora stands. Now that even Debian has agreed to distribute the original fork of Cdrtools, is Fedora considering that option? Several other distros are distributing the original fork now, and it's where active development is ongoing.

kernel 2.6.21.5, Slackware 12.0 cdrecord 2.01
Code:
This is the command line I used to run cdrecord. Afterwards, I ran 'cdrecord -media-info' on the same disc and, as a result, I got the messages contained in the file I am adjoining. There, two consecutive warnings can be seen, which I quote:
Quote:
The disk, after recording, however, is both readable by GNU/linux and another O.S. What is the meaning of those warnings and what are its possible implications? I would like to know.

According to the instructions, which I read in many places, I should use the following command:

I tried the following (in an Ubuntu-Hardy desktop):

1) where was all that written?
2) how to use the command line to write CDs?

Still getting the "cdrecord has no permission to open the device" error when trying to burn an iso image to a DVD-RW.
I did yet another clean install of openSUSE 11.2 64 on my desktop computer, did updates, added Nvidia and Packman repos (it's not a repo problem as I tried it several times on a totally clean install), added codecs and stuff as advised by caf.
I updated the DVD drive firmware earlier today.
My user is a member of ALL groups.
Drive is an LG GH22NSS50 (sata)
It all works (with the same DVD-RW) under winxp on the same machine.
Is it HAL or something else that blocks permission to devices?
I'm really getting sick to death of this problem, and would be happy just to get rid of anything blocking permissions to the DVD drive.

I was trying to burn an .iso with K3b a little while ago, and had some problems. First of all, even though I chose 8x to burn my (16x) DVD, it switched to 11x or 12x around halfway through the burning process. There were also some ticking noises that I'm pretty sure were coming from the DVD writer, not terribly loud, but noticeable. This had never happened before. Finally, it got stuck at about 98% (but not frozen, as the time elapsed kept going), and did not finish burning--got an error message (and a bad disc): "cdrecord has no permission to open the device"
I inspected the disc and there was one dark spot (on the dye) about halfway through the disc, very thin and couple of millimeters long. (This was present only after burning). I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, K3b version 1.91.0, Lite-On DVDRW SHW-160P6S

I have just upgraded to Lucid on Ubuntu. I am a long time Pidgin user. I tried using Empathy with Gwibber, but I can't get Gwibber to update my IM status(es) in Empathy, so I want to go back to using Pidgin. (Additionally, I can't get Skype to work with Empathy.)I installed pidgin-microblog and pidgin-mbpurple, and they allow me to view my Twitter feed in Pidgin and update my Twitter status in Pidgin. However, in Karmic, I was also able to specify certain "status availabilities" (one named "Twitter-Available" and one named "Twitter-Away", for instance) to have the IM status message for these statuses become populated with my Twitter feed. This capability seems missing in pidgin-mbpurple in Lucid (and it seems to be the only thing missing from Karmic).
Is there a way to have pidgin-mbpurple update certain "status availabilities" in Lucid (and I'm just missing something) or is this no longer possible?Equivalently, is it possible to have Gwibber update my status message in Empathy? (I just want to be able to update my status once on one of my three computers - and have it propagate to all my other accounts (IM and social networking) and computers).

how to restore the original yum settings?
I followed a walkthrough that set the yum config to be more robust(?) or harder to break F11 and since have had major problems installing things.
Can I roll this back or reinstall the yum parts of the OS from scratch to regain normal operation?

I tried to install KDevelop4, decided I didn't want to use it, and now I am having trouble getting KDevelop3 working again. The only steps to installing kdevelop4 were installing a new version of kdevplatform and then kdevelop itself. I did this:
1) sudo yum remove "kdevplatform* kdevelop*"
2) disable updates and testing repo
3) sudo yum install "kdevelop"
The problem is that there is something wrong with the menus (File, Edit, etc). There are many important items missing, as well as one of them says "No text!". This indicates that this is not the original packaged version with F11 because I used it for a year and it was certainly not like this. Is there a better way to get back to the original version than I showed here?

I installed F9 for a friend. She wasn't getting any sound. I ran aplay -l, but got no sound card listed. I ran lspci -v, but got no sound card listed. However, the output of lspci -v said the computer had a particular motherboard. I Googled for it and was told it had an onboard sound card. That led me to the package called realtek-linux-audiopack-4.06a, which I installed. It included an installation script, which I ran.
The script didn't work to compile various files it was supposed to, but it did work to delete various files from my friend's system. Here are the bits of the script that removed files:
echo "Remove old sound driver"
if [ -d /lib/modules/$KERNEL_VER/kernel/sound ]; then
rm -rf /lib/modules/$KERNEL_VER/kernel/sound/pci > /dev/null 2>&1
[code]....
In the result, the failure of the compilation didn't matter, because lspci -v lied. She didn't have the motherboard shown, but a different one without an onboard sound card. Of the files deleted by the script.
I was able to reinstall libasound.so.2 and libasound.so.2.0.0, but I haven't yet tried to reinstall the other ones deleted by the script. Now, I want her to buy a sound card, but I'm afraid it won't work unless all the deleted files are reinstalled. I'm looking for guidance as to how I can reinstall the files deleted by the bits of the script I set out above, without completely reinstalling Fedora.

After a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 I uninstalled empathy (im using skype). The empathy menu in the evolution indicator was gone after that.I also uninstalled gwibber. But the gwibber status indicator remains within the about-me panel... Uninstalling the gwibber package also removes the me-menu which I want to keep actually. Especially the shutdown/restart... part of it. See attachment.I know there is a shutdown panel-app...but its butt-ugly and it doesnt allow to logon/off.
In another thread I read that the gwibber status shouldnt be there if no account for it is configured... which it is not... I do use ubuntu-one though which is in the same menu... I saw that this issue was addressed at some bug report before, but not fixed yet...
Does anybody know a good workaround to get rid of the gwibber status in the panel while keeping the about me and the shutdown button?

I tried to burn with k3b but after a while the fateful message "cdrecord has no permission to write to the device. " Then I launched k3bsetup and I selected the burning group. Did not exist. I created it and now i'm included in it. Then I checked all the boxes for the write permissions of the programs used by k3b and the writer. Now it works. But after reboot, the box of the burner device is not checked. So I have to select it each time. Boring. DO you know how to save the setting permanently

1) Write a C program using the fork() system call that that generates the Fibonacci sequence in the child process. The number of the sequence will be provided in the command line. For example, if 5 is provided, the first five numbers in the Fibonacci sequence will be output by the child process. Because the parent and child processes have their own copies of the data, it will be necessary for the child to output the sequence. Have the parent invoke the wait() call to wait for the child process to complete before exiting the program. Perform necessary error checking to ensure that a non-negative number is passed on the command line.
2) Repeat the preceding exercise, this time using the CreateProcess () in the Win32 API. In this instance, you will need to specify a separate program to be invoked from CreateProcess(). It is this separate program that will run as a child process outputting the Fibonacci sequence. Perform necessary error checking to ensure that a non-negative number is passed on the command line.i have done with Fibonacci sequence .but i dont know how to include tht fork() function and win32 api .any one can help to finish?

As part of my ongoing project I need to put together a messaging server of sorts. So far I have coded a server which accepts multiple connections, which then runs a function that will perform a task, see below. On this sever I have a global structure which is populated using the data found in a read() buffer. However with each fork() that runs the below function each process is handed a blank structure. How could I go about allowing each fork() child process access the same structure?
My code should hopefully show what I am trying to do?

- License Agreement
- System User
- Date and Time
- Hardware Profile
the next reboot ended up with no launcher, no status bar, just clean desktop with 3 icons:Trash, the user's home and "Computer".I launched /usr/bin/gnome-terminal to try and upgrade to fedora 14, maybe it will resolve this situation.but it will might take some time.

Just coming over from Windows here... where I've been using "CreateProcess" which returns a value depending on whether the process was created successfully or not.
Now I'm trying to create a process on linux and I've been learning about fork/exec, and I've been struggling with the fact that there seems to be no easy way to know (within the original parent process) if exec succeeded or not. (without forcing the parent process to hang around polling it or something).
Anyway, I've now just discovered the posix_spawn function, and it seems exactly what I need. However I'm finding the documentation a little hard to understand. In particular, I can't find actual confirmation that it will definitely return an error if creating the process fails (like CreateProcess does on windows). So can anyone confirm that for me?
The text on the documentation states: "If posix_spawn() or posix_spawnp() fail for any of the reasons that would cause fork() or one of the exec family of functions to fail, an error value shall be returned as described by fork() and exec"
This makes me think it uses exec/fork under the hood, and so I wonder if it can be trusted..?
And also, most of the examples on the internet for creating processes use fork/exec, so I wonder if there is some catch with posix_spawn I haven't read about... (since it seems a much simpler way of doing things)
