well probably most of you have switched to FF 4.0
my major problem with it however , is the way the cache is stored on the hdd , now everything is sort of "sorted" into an endless number of folders.
i'm wondering why did they do it that way ? how are we supposed to browse the cache folders from now?
btw i've always resorted to the cache folder for extracting all kinds of things the browser downloads..
I don't want my Firefox browser to store anything in a cache. Is there a way to shut the cache off?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been saving an XML file wherein I shall be reading data, if and only if the XML is present on Hard Drive. If same is not present, the code shall generate first and next time it shall simply read and not jump into writing part again and again. The issue that I am facing is, I am deleting the file manually going to that location, and checking whether it is reading the data, upon investigation, I found that it is really reading the data although the file is deleted.
I suspected that there may be some cache issue from where it is picking values, hence it fired the command
"sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches"
But it is still doing the same pattern.
I get an error while trying to update the repo.

streaming videos i sometime want to save them, after watching. generally they're saved as flash videos or mpeg-4 video, which is all fine.however periodically they're split-up and saved in smaller chunks with names like data_1, data_2, data_3 etc. these range from 14.0 - 44.0 MB. the file in question (currently i'm trying to save from the cache) was from divxden, or possibly divxstage.eu either way i think it used the totem plugin.so, my question is: does anyone know if these files can be stuck back together, or if this feature can be changed so streamed files are kept intact?

After a few days I'm still pointing at the old server and the hosting company have recommended that I flush my dns cache. A quick google for this in linux seemed to recommend restarting the nscd daemon but nscd -g tells me it's not running anyway. I connect to Virginmedia via wired ethernet to a Belkin N1 router so is there a way I can do this I wonder, either via Virginmedia or Slackware?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm doing a bit of housekeeping and tidying up of programs I no longer need/use, and as some of these were installed using sbopkg I thought I would also tidy those. However when attempting to view obsolete sources via the utilities sub-menu, sbopkg seems to crash to a cli interface from the ncurses one and spews continuously the error below. This thern continues until I CTRL+C the process which of course then leaves the sbopkg pid file still showing active in /var/run. Anyone else come across this, and a possible way to prevent it.

I was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.
Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).
I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?
I installed squid cache on my ubuntu server 10.10 and it is work fine but i want to know how to make it cache all files like .exe .mp3 .avi ....etc. and the other thing i want to know is how to make my client take the files from the cache in the full speed. since am using mikrotik system to use pppoe for clients and i match it with my ubuntu squid

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.

If I disable the repo-non-oss repository the update works fine. The URL I have for the repo-non-oss repository is:

This has been going on for over a week. Do I need to use a different URL for the non-oss repository? I live in New York, United States.
It seems my 320gb HDD has bitten the dust. The timing couldn't be more ironic as I have spent a couple of days tidying the files on it to burn them to disk.
This is an ntfs drive that had indicated 4 bad sectors but up until today (backup day) was fine. I am unable to mount it and in fact it is causing some sort of conflict with the OS drive and wont let the system boot up successfully.
I am going to try using a windows based PC tomorrow to see if I can rescue the data.
Are there any 'other' tricks to try and mount it with ubuntu that I may not have tried so far? I have tried-
mkdir /media/disk
fdisk -l to establish it's name which was /dev/sdb1 when it was all working but it isn't reachable and doesn't show in the places menu or in any of the menus when using a live CD to get round the HDD clash.
sudo mount -a used in desperation after the mkdir but nothing.
I rejigged the cabling inside the PC to make the HDD a secondary master as it was a slave on the primary IDE to start with in the hope that the system would boot up normally but to no avail.
I've got 10.10 running trying to recover files from 10.04/10.10 I don't know what to call it. I did update-manager -d but all I get is a bunch of failed packages when I try to run it, so I downloaded the full RC iso. Now I'm trying to recover my stuff from the HD using a live-usb. The only problem is, when I try to copy the files onto my SD card, I do not have permission to access some of the stuff on the HD and some of the stuff like the "Desktop" I do.

Finally I got a connection working in one direction: sending files from my mobile (Google Nexus One with Android 2.3.3) to the computer. But I can not send files from my computer to the phone. I also tried to send files from my desktop to my Laptop and it fails. I also tried it the other way around: from Laptop to Desktop... fail.
What is it? Is it still a bug in Bluedevil and all I can do is wait? Or is there some package missing? The following packages (regarding bluetooth) are installed:

bluez
libbluetooth 3
pulseaudio-module-bluetooth
I don't believe that it is hardware related, because it works one-way... If I should post logfiles or whatever.
I should have seen this coming when I lost the ability to boot windows, or mount that drive from ubuntu. But now I think my hard drive has failed. Is there any way to retrieve the data from the hard drive, or my settings and the like for ubuntu? I'm at a loss for what to do as i'm booting from a CD right now =X.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just want one last attempt at seeing if there's a solution. My Dell Studio 15 laptop HDD that runs Vista failed, I booted Ubuntu from a CD knowing that I should be able to recover my data.
However, Ubuntu can't find my HDD, it's not listed and "fdisk -l" doesn't result in anything. The BIOS seems to know that the HDD is there though.
i was looking for a way to stop my menus taking a few seconds to load my icons when i first open them and found a few guides suggesting using the gtk-upate-icon-cache command, but with the any colour you like icon theme i'm using (stored in my home folder .icons directory) i kept getting a "gtk-update-icon-cache: The generated cache was invalid." fault i used the inbuilt facility in the acyl script to copy the icons to the usr/share/icons directory and tried the command again, this time using sudo gtk-update-icon-cache --force --ignore-theme-index /usr/share/icons/ACYL_Icon_Theme_0.8.1/ but i still get the same error. i tried with several of the custom icon themes i've installed and only 1 of the first 7 or 8 i tried successfully created the cache.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried a 9.10 -> 10.04 upgrade that went fail. I can now get it to the login screen where it gives a hard freeze. Same with recovery. I can get to a command line, but not with networking so
So I finally said screw it, I'm going to doa fresh install. I downloaded and burned 10.04 at work. Not, it is giving me an installer error when I boot from it, but then it will load the desktop from the LiveCD.
All I really want to do is grab some data that I didn't get when I backed up by home directory, then I can go back and do a fresh install. I can even download a new 10.04 CD if I need to because the installation files are screwed up or something.
The problem is that some of the files have permissions on that that show as an 'X' on the icon and it won't let me copy them to my USB backup drive.
How can I copy the files marked with an 'X' that have this permission issue?

I recently made a script to automatically download a directory from my webserver using ftps (required by hosting company). It seems policy has changed again or something, because trying to download files gets the following error:
mirror: Access failed: 521 Data connection cannot be opened with this PROT setting.I can access the files just fine with Filezilla, but not lftp. I didn't change the code, but here it as anyway:

/dev/sdc has failed a coulple of times this week (but I have always sucessfully readded it to raid5) . But the increasing number of reallocated sectores on /dev/sdd concerns me even more.
I'm affraid that during removal of /dev/sdd and adding new /devs/sdd disk, raid might fall appart. That's why I would try to do it in Ubuntu Live CD:If the raid falls appart (/dev/sdc fails) during the readding of new /dev/sdd disk, I might still remove the new /dev/sdd and return the previous one and assemble the raid with:
/dev/sda
/dev/sdb
/dev/sdd (old one that was previously removed)
Does assembling Raid in Ubuntu Live and adding new disk for /dev/sdd write anything on /dev/sda, /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc in the process of adding /dev/sdd into raid5?

I have a laptop running slackware-current. The disk is /dev/sda and the root 'sda1' is xfs formatted (there is also linux swap at sda2).
recently I was trying to setup openvpn and had to copy a folder with configuration files from /usr/doc/openvpn_<version>/easy-rsa to /etc/openvpn.
I am sure the copying completed cause I got a prompt, but a few seconds later the battery died on me. When I got mains and powered it up, I could see the directory I copied under /etc/openvpn, and the files where all there too. but they all contained nothing. i.e. they had a size of 0.
I read [URL] Fthat an external journal filesystem for root is not supported. I am not sure If it applies to my situation though. As in does it use an internal journal instead?
and the bottom line is: shouldn't the copying have completed successfully? shouldn't I be worried, that this copy failed?
the software will go through the motions and say burn successful and all the disc itself will even have look like its been written (with the burn circle and all), but when its put into the drive afterwards its still empty. My fstab has
