May 21, 2009
Using Slackware 12.2 Also using live CDs Slax 6.1.1 and knoppix 6
Is there a program I can use to send a fax from my computer with Slackware or any of these live CDs?
Is there any special hardware that I would need?

I found out that package 'qt-4.5.3_063bded-i486-3' in slackware-current has no html docs. I learn qt4 programming and I need this docs. So I got qt-4.6.1 from the official site, built, installed and use the mainline version 4.6.1 instead of recommended qt from the KDE git brunch. Honestly I see no difference between slackware's 4.5.3 and mainline 4.6.1.Is there place where I can send bug reports or suggestions about slackware distro? I really like this simple, fast, reliable and completely clear distributive and I want to help to improve it.

I have a laptop that I want to connect to my stereo via USB, and I want the other computers on my network to be able to send sound to it somewhat transparently. By "transparently" I mean that I want to be able to send literally any audio that would go through my local speakers to the stereo via the network. As far as I know, PulseAudio can do this without rebuilding any multimedia packages. No one really has anything good to say about PulseAudio, though.
As of now I'm ready to wipe the laptop (Pentium 4) and put pretty much anything (*nix) on it. I know PulseAudio is pretty easy to get running on *buntu, so I might end up doing that. I just want to be able to turn on the laptop and connect the stereo (in any order) and without doing anything else, have it ready to go on the network. Of course, I'm willing to put in some work to get it running. I prefer Slackware and FreeBSD, but the machine will literally just be there to send sound to the stereo.
Someone on forums.freebsd.org suggested NAS as a solution to a similar problem; however, I can't find anything useful regarding how to configure it, troubleshoot it, etc. I've only found random threads on the web by people who know how to use it or by people who can't find any resources for it.
Anyway, I'll be busy setting up PulseAudio to see how that works out. I can always wipe the laptop later, and I have a Kubuntu boot on my main laptop that I don't really care about.

In my continuing quest to live without X most of the time, I am trying to set up fetchmail and Mutt to get and send mail. I only want to be able to send and receive text based mail, and so far I am running into trouble with what I think should be pretty simple. For receiving my mail, I believe I only need to create a .fetchmailrc file in my home directory with the entry:
Code: poll [URL] protocol pop3 username "myusername" password "mypassword" But I get:
2 messages for myusername at mail.myISP.com (7965 octets).
fetchmail: connection to localhost:smtp [127.0.0.1/25] failed: Connection refused.
fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed
fetchmail: SMTP transaction error while fetching from wetumpka@mail.btopenworld.com and delivering to SMTP host localhost
reading message myusername@pop-smtp.ISP.mail.fy5.b.yahoo.com:1 of 2 (2734 octets)fetchmail: Query status=10 (SMTP)
It appears to me that it is finding mail but does not know where to deliver it and is refused a connection to my machine. Also, I cannot figure out how to set up my SMTP for my ISP in Mutt to send mail. Can someone point me to a simple tutuorial on how to do these things. I really only want to do what you would with Thunderbird, but from the command line.

Well, I noticed this by accident while trying to use dash for the rc.d scripts. I messed up and forgot to link it to /bin, and as such, the system failed to boot properly and would not respond. I rebooted (forcefully), but this messed up the filesystem. I booted the sw64 install DVD and tried to mount it, and it would not mount.
I tried to run fsck on it, but it said that fsck.jfs in NOT available. Eventually I booted my old slamd64 12.1 DVD and it had fsck.jfs. Any reason why this rather useful program was removed ? Or is it a bug, or is my DVD messed up? I guess I should just keep around another live CD, I do keep knoppix, but it boots so slow and I don't understand it at all, it's so hard to do anything with it.

why another slackish distro? Mine (will be) better than most Please try it before you criticize it It is quite unique in many ways I really did it to show how easily one can make their own 12.2 install into a live distro So, it is a proof-of-concept thing Desktop: My own JWM creation heavily based off Vector's JWM Display manager: Slim from Slackbuilds Packages: All pkg's are 12.2 slack, sbopkg's, and slapt-get/gslapt from Slacky, some others converted from absolute/salixos/source. I custom built the JWM desktop, systray-volume-control, and many from-scratch scripts.
Heres some of the pkg's Games: Xgalaga sbopkg Graphics: Gimp, Imagemagick Office: Abiword, Gaiksaurus, Xcalc Multimedia: Mplayer, XMMS, Audacious, Alsamixergui, Pulsaudio Alsaplayer, Isomaster Misc: Roxterm,rox-filer, PCMANFM, lxterminal, lxtask, leafpad xarchiver, catfish, lxappearance, nitrogen System: Gparted, ddrescue, testdisk, Gnome net tools, WICD wifi-radar, Gslapt, Network: Firefox, dillo, xchat, gftp, grsync

I'm not 100% sure as to where exactly to post this, but I've been wanting to set up a second computer for a while, and I finally put together a computer using the original motherboard and CPU from an HP Pavilion 7905, 1.6 GHz. I put in 512 MB of RAM, and I burned a Slackware DVD using my main computer. But when I boot up the DVD, I had an issue booting to the "normal" kernel, the hugesmp.s one. So, I tried the huge.s kernel, and it's still not working for me. I got the following output out of it when it crashed // froze:

Update: I've been looking into third party tools and Slackware live Distributions, example, "Slax"; still, I have yet to have complete success.
I have discovered that by using syslinux I can make the USB Hard-drive Bootable -- I learned this by playing around with Gentoo, however, I like Slackware. I was wondering if any-one could point me toward the direction of how to install Slackware and then utilize syslinux to make it bootable?

I am using KMS with a radeon 3650, KMS with kernel 2.6.33.2, xf86-video-ati 6.13.0 and mesa 7.7I am using fluxbox, and only have one transparent terminal running. I have not been playing any games(so no 3d acceleration?).My computer is getting far too hot from this. Not overheating to the point it shuts down, but the fan is going full bore, and mplayer stutters when playing a movie. This never happened when I was not using KMS, so it seems likely that that is the cause. It is definitely related to graphics, because when I exit X the temperature cools rapidly. Is this just because KMS is new and still being worked out, or is it something that can possibly be fixed?

For instance, I try this page: >click<
But I get this error:
The Totem Plugin could not be started. Failed to create a GStreamer play object. Please check your GStreamer installation.
Slackware is fully updated.
EDIT: I have also installed the latest version of GStreamer from source, and 3 plugins.

The Ultimate Bootable CD (UBCD) is a great live CD with a host of great tools and utlilities, useful to anyone interested in making a broken system bootable again. It is a good idea to familiarise yourself with this CD by having a look through it often,so that when you need to use it you know where things are...learning the command line syntax is better but this is a very useful stop gap while that process is ongoing...
You can have a look at it from here[URL]..download [URL].. burn at 8x I use CD-RW discs to save wasting Cd's...boot the CD up using function key or BIOS set for CD/DVD as first boot device. To navigate the disc...Esc, use Ctrl Alt Delete if you get stuck,Space Bar to insert a tick,Tab to change field, arrow keys to navigate the choices.

I just finished building the monodevelop package(including the dependencies). I have other computer that have the same version of slackware(ver 13.0) and I would like to install the packages I build from one computer into other computer.
My question is can I just install all the packages without regards to the order of dependencies (remember, it is already a package) or should I install the package in order? I also ask this for me to know what to do when my new laptop arrive. I would like to install all the SlackBuild packages i have on this computer and I would like to minimize, if not, eliminate the need to build the packages I have already build.

I have a slack 64 13.1 box, that I want to be able to control the monitor of from my laptop. Here's the scenario: I can already control the music remotely via X forwarding banshee to my laptop (banshee shows up on the laptop and music comes out on the desktop). Now I want to be able to open a movie on the desktop's display via the laptop.
Now googling this comes up with solutions for X forwarding, but I don't want it to forward X I want it to display on the desktop.

1) When my computer boots up it stalls when HAL daemon loads. This did not happen until I plugged in a defective hard drive. Anyone have any idea of how to go about fixing this?
2) If I open the session manager system setting, and untick "confirm logout" my system will shutdown instead of logging out. With the option enabled my computer logs out normally. I don't need the confirmation and find it redundant and feel like Linux is holding my hand and that's why I use linux because generally speaking I don't like an OS that wants to hold my hand, metaphorically, I mean.

My old workhorse computer's motherboard died yesterday, and I want to get everything off of its RAID1 array. I have a backup on an external drive but it's a few weeks old and I'd like to make sure I've got everything.
The old machine ran Slackware 12.1, and had a 2-drive IDE 250GB RAID1 array with partitions:
md0 - swap
md1 - /
The new machine has Slackware 13.1, and also has a 2-drive SATA 250GB RAID1 array with partitions:
md0 - /
md1 - swap
md2 - /home
I put the IDE drives from the old computer into the new one. I'm not sure how to get the old array going now. I'm not sure if I should use mdadm with --assemble (since the array was already set up before) or with --create (because the array needs to be renamed so it doesn't clash with the new computer's md1). I'm thinking I should use --create and give the old md1 a new name (md3). But I'm not sure if anything bad will happen if I use --create on an array with data on it.
Output of mdadm -Esv:
Code:
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=9a0cc71f:df5e59d9:50e7b281:3adcc49f
devices=/dev/sda1,/dev/sdb1
ARRAY /dev/md1 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=698c321a:8008c659:d8c7deeb:c1dd303c
[code]....
The old drives are the last two entries, sdc and sdd. It's odd that the order is reversed. I had (non-RAID) Windows partitions on both drives and I've mounted them and verified that the drives are on the IDE cable in the right order, and sdc is the original 1st drive of the array, and sdd is the 2nd drive of the array.

I am trying this with Slackware 12.0. I am trying to send mails to a user on my own machine... for example $ mail root #root or other user, it's the same (write subject and body) and it looks like the mail has been sent, by then I write mail and i've got no new mail..tried
mail root@localhost
mail root@slackware #slackware is how my machine is called (`hostname` told me :P)
mail root@127.0.0.1
and none of them worked... after hours trying to solve this, i thought i needed an smtp sever... so i started up sendmail but using mail didn't worked... i connected with netcat to port 25 and sendmail answered.. I send a mail with netcat, and sendmail said it was all ok.. but i didn't recived anything. then i realized that the mails where in queue... /var/spool/mqueue here is what sendmail tells me (i remove all the mails in mqueue and i only post 1 here)
Code:
$ sendmail -q -v
WARNING: local host name (slackware) is not qualified; see cf/README: WHO AM I?
Running /var/spool/mqueue/p61FPoll003674 (sequence 1 of 1)
slackware: Name server timeout
