Software :: Pidgin Only Runs As Root?
Jan 11, 2011
I upgraded my old Ubuntu machine to Maverick and have run into a few problems. One of them is that Pidgin refuses to run. Here is an attempt:
Code:
luc[111-0]> pidgin sh: kdialogd-wrapper: not found

Installed Firefox, Installed flashplugin-nonfree using apt-get, run FF as root and flash plays ok. Run FF as user and no flash. It prompts to download plugins and then fails.
$sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
$sudo apt-get install firefox-3.6
$sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

This is on RedHat EL 5.2. I extract the tar.bz2 file downloaded from Mozilla's site, and drop it in user/firefox. I try to run Firefox, from a launcher I made, and nothing happens. I use the root terminal, and cd to the firefox directory, and run ./firefox, and it opens. The user owns all of the files and directories, but it still won't work unless I'm root

System:
ASUS Pro50n series Laptop
Distro: Arch Linux
DE: Gnome
I've just installed Exaile media player via pacman and I try and run it, nothing happens. I run it from the terminal and get the error:
IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/scott/.config/exaile/exaile.log'
I looked in the log file stated above and it says nothing. I can however, run exaile under root with "sudo exaile" and it runs fine then. I had a similar problem with Emesene messenger, but couldn't find anything on any forums so I just used Empathy IM Client instead. It appears that its possibly something to do with the read/write permissions relating to ~/.config/ folder... because it does the same with banshee also, and the errors relate to permission denied to all folders within ~/.config/ whereas in root it can read and write and access this folder and the config files within fine. How I can try changing the privileges relating to this folder?

I have had slack 12 on this computer for quite a while with never a problem. Slack 13.1 was installed a few weeks ago without a problem, it seems to run forever as long as it is root. When I go to user it will crash 2 or 3 times a day. When it crashes it is a total lockup that only the off/on switch will reset it. There is no certain time or thing that causes it, it will just lockup while surfing using the command line switching or opening a new le. Any suggestions will be appreciated! I have googled and searched with no info found.I do have 13.1 on another computer that works fine, it has an nvidea video card in it and it is 64 bit.

I have a Kubuntu 10.10 install on which I can't update my packages due to some fail conflict between pidgin and pidgin-facebookchat. I can't even remove the stuff via apt-get due to this conflict...
sudo apt-get remove pidgin
Code:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:

I use a SLES-machine (should be similar to opensuse I guess) and ad AIX-machine and got the following error:
Every time a none-root user runs an "at"-command on the linux machine, there is an error written into the errorreport of the AIX-machine. the error is the following: <82>Jul 12 22:32:09 linux-hostname atd[10754]: PAM audit_log_user_message() failed: Operation not permitted
I already checked the files /etc/at.deny (exists with users listed like "alias, backup, bin, ..." but not the user that causes the error-message) and /etc/at.allow (which does not exist but is not necessary, as far as I could read from the internet).

I have debian lenny, when I run an application is slow to load (example: iceweacel open and it takes, I can hold him iceweacel work normally), I tried to change from gnome to another and the same thing, went down some services (samba, squid) and nothing. I open a terminal and it takes, I want to duplicate it and do it fast. From a terminal without X (tty1) with root run mc and moves quickly, also run as root "sudo mc" and takes to boot.Any action done with sudo it takes to run.
Can not be what it takes to make starting the applications, not the PC because it is new, and from one moment to another I began to pass this
The sudoers file is fine, in the log's nothing unusual, since other PC take long to enter samba.

Previously after doing aptitude upgrade, my pidgin seems broken with no gui shown. So I decided to download the latest source from pidgin website and build it from source, but I think I made situation worse because it then complained that ssl lib was needed. Then I removed the libpurple (e.g. aptitude purge libpurple0 libpurple-bin libpurple-dev) and reinstalled pidgin (aptitude install pidgin). Now it shows the error
pidgin: symbol lookup error: pidgin: undefined symbol: purple_media_element_info_get_type
I searched on the internet and can not find a solution. The clues on the internet says that's because the piding I use is the older version of libpurple. But I think I've removed all with purge and reinstalled it. Maybe some legacy binary is referenced. What or where it might be? Or where there may contain related information.

I installed Fedora 15 yesterday. Took a few hours to get used to the Gnome 3 interface, and I love it.I noticed that my fan seems to be running all the time irrespective of system load, even when it's idle.An internet search yielded this supposedly resolved issue where the fan ran constantly on systems with Intel integrated graphicsLike that link states, I am running the latest updatedl kernel-2.6.38.6-27.fc15, but the fan running continuously issue still persists.

I have a couple of problems (opensuse11.1):
1: CPU that runs always very high.
In the system monitor I have a number of unknown processes from user root,-1 that keep popping up (see yellow highlight in image1). What are they?
As you may see zombie processes are also coming and going... among which dns-resolver, ifup, ifdown, ifdown-route, netconfig, nis, ntp-config, udved, grep,
touch.... Is that normal??
The system load view in the monitor indicates 2 CPUs with different loads (see image2) when I have only one intelP4. What is this?
At the same time the output of command top seems more regular, except for the high cpu load, although I wouldn't be able to say what every processes is meant for.(image3)
Has anyone an explanation? Is it normal that most of these zombie processes seem network related?
2. Virus report from external server
I usually connect to a server via VPN (to access electronic journals) but recently the access has been denied to me because "my connection is infected with the worm Conficker".
I know it is very unlikely that a linux pc catches a virus.. so I am puzzeld... I have a dual boot with Windows (probably infected in some ways) but haven't used it for at least a year..

I installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron about six months ago, and it has gradually slowed down, and CPU utilization has crept up to the 50-60% range. The DEV folder contains a large number of similar files - TTY0 through TTYZF or PTYA0 through PTYZF. I suspect that something is not configured right, but, I don't know where to look.
I connect to the internet through a G4 Wireless Transceiver connected to my ethernet port on an IBM Think Center 8187.

The problem is I need the php program to send member email confirmation which contains a confirm link. Run every min may still make the member wait. So I like to make it to run every 20 or 30 secs.
I don't want to put the code to send email on my sign up page as that's no good.
But I don't want to put a sleep 30 sec on my php script and going on loop. If it failed in the middle then it may wait abit to start.
What can be done to achieve my goal and what's the best way?
Making a php script to run as a daemon process? Is that possible and okay?

I had F11 i586 installed on my X86_64 machine. I used preupgrade to move up to F12. (I had the space problems noted elsewhere, but eventually got all of the F12 packages installed.) Grub now has the following titles:
Fedora (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686)
Upgrade to Fedora 12 (Constantine)
Fedora (2.6.30.9-96.fc11.i586)
If I boot to F12, it boots up to a point where I get garbage graphics and the system freezes. If I boot to F11, SELinux relabels and the system then boots normally. I'd like to boot normally into F12.

I have a machine currently running Debian Lenny on which I would like to run Ubuntu for the driver support in its newer kernel. However, I did a test boot from the installation CD and it appears to be running at less than half its rated speed. This is the output from the Debian kernel:
brendand@kant:~$ uname -a
Linux kant 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Wed May 12 18:03:14 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
brendand@kant:~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor: 0
[Code].....
Maybe this is some sort of power save bug where the CPU speed is incorrectly scaled back. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Should I report it as a bug, and, if so, how do I do that?

I have been running Lucid since it was in beta, and have never had any problems with Compiz. Now, all of a sudden it will not launch. If I try to run it from a terminal I get the following:
Code:
compiz (core) - Fatal: Software rendering detected.
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
Launching fallback window manager I am running an Intel 82915G/GV/910GL built in graphics controller, and when I run the compiz-check script everything checks out fine.

I have an IBM ThinkPad T43 on which I run Ubuntu 10.10. Everything works fairly smoothly except that I notice my laptop fan runs continuously. When I turn on the machine it revs up until boot-up is complete, then it shuts off for a few minutes, and then it comes back on and never turns off until I'm through working. Is this strictly a hardware problem, or is there something about Linux that causes the computer to run hot and so causes the fan to work hard? Is there a setting that I could check to see if the fan is working properly? I don't use any exotic programs or run video intensive games, so there's no reason why the computer should run especially hot

I am attempting to recover a deleted text file. I used dd to make an image of the sectors on the hard drive which contained the data. Now, since I am not getting good results with foremost, and know all of the lines I'm looking for contain "Style", I want to grep the .img, but when I do it runs out of memory. I have tried the grep option -D, set to skip, and tried adding a 3GB swap to account for the 2.7G image. It still "exhausts" it's memory, and it seems to happen really quick now.this is the output of ulimit -a

I migrated joomla to my new server and noticed that the script doesn't have the permission to edit it's own configuration file and write to the cache folder. All my files are owned by root, which I guess isn't a good idea.
As what user do the PHP scripts run? Or is this system specific? I don't want to chmod all files to 777 so I'd just like to change file and folder ownerships to the user that is executing that script.
