Software :: Flash On Firefox Runs Badly And Crashes?

Feb 16, 2010

I have yet to make flash run smoothly on Linux. I tried Chromium, Firefox, flash versions from 8 and up; it runs but makes firefox crash, chromium does not crash but it's all slow and breaky. Flash 9 runs and does not crash but has no sound. No version on any browser can run HD flashes, it just breaks up and runs like in 3 second interval frames.I have tried everything I've read and spent 3 months trying to watch the nfl.com unsuccessfully. Is flash working smoothly for anybody?

Software :: Firefox Only Runs As Root?

May 6, 2010

This is on RedHat EL 5.2. I extract the tar.bz2 file downloaded from Mozilla's site, and drop it in user/firefox. I try to run Firefox, from a launcher I made, and nothing happens. I use the root terminal, and cd to the firefox directory, and run ./firefox, and it opens. The user owns all of the files and directories, but it still won't work unless I'm root

Software :: Exaile Media Player Only Runs In Root

Jan 21, 2010

System:
ASUS Pro50n series Laptop
Distro: Arch Linux
DE: Gnome

I've just installed Exaile media player via pacman and I try and run it, nothing happens. I run it from the terminal and get the error:
IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/scott/.config/exaile/exaile.log'

I looked in the log file stated above and it says nothing. I can however, run exaile under root with "sudo exaile" and it runs fine then. I had a similar problem with Emesene messenger, but couldn't find anything on any forums so I just used Empathy IM Client instead. It appears that its possibly something to do with the read/write permissions relating to ~/.config/ folder... because it does the same with banshee also, and the errors relate to permission denied to all folders within ~/.config/ whereas in root it can read and write and access this folder and the config files within fine. How I can try changing the privileges relating to this folder?

Slackware :: 13.1 Runs Fine As Root, Crashes When Run As User?

Jun 26, 2010

I have had slack 12 on this computer for quite a while with never a problem. Slack 13.1 was installed a few weeks ago without a problem, it seems to run forever as long as it is root. When I go to user it will crash 2 or 3 times a day. When it crashes it is a total lockup that only the off/on switch will reset it. There is no certain time or thing that causes it, it will just lockup while surfing using the command line switching or opening a new le. Any suggestions will be appreciated! I have googled and searched with no info found.I do have 13.1 on another computer that works fine, it has an nvidea video card in it and it is 64 bit.

OpenSUSE :: None-root User Runs An "at"-command - Error Written Into Errorreport Of The AIX-machine

Jul 13, 2010

I use a SLES-machine (should be similar to opensuse I guess) and ad AIX-machine and got the following error:

Every time a none-root user runs an "at"-command on the linux machine, there is an error written into the errorreport of the AIX-machine. the error is the following: <82>Jul 12 22:32:09 linux-hostname atd[10754]: PAM audit_log_user_message() failed: Operation not permitted

I already checked the files /etc/at.deny (exists with users listed like "alias, backup, bin, ..." but not the user that causes the error-message) and /etc/at.allow (which does not exist but is not necessary, as far as I could read from the internet).

Server :: Server Runs Commands Slowly / Root "sudo Mc" And Takes To Boot?

Sep 1, 2010

I have debian lenny, when I run an application is slow to load (example: iceweacel open and it takes, I can hold him iceweacel work normally), I tried to change from gnome to another and the same thing, went down some services (samba, squid) and nothing. I open a terminal and it takes, I want to duplicate it and do it fast. From a terminal without X (tty1) with root run mc and moves quickly, also run as root "sudo mc" and takes to boot.Any action done with sudo it takes to run.

Can not be what it takes to make starting the applications, not the PC because it is new, and from one moment to another I began to pass this

The sudoers file is fine, in the log's nothing unusual, since other PC take long to enter samba.

Ubuntu :: Suddenly Flash Drives Think They Belong To Root

May 5, 2011

One day recently, when I plug in a flash drive, Xubuntu won't let me write to it unless I open my file manager as root (gksudo thunar). This happened a few weeks ago, back under 10.10; I didn't say anything because I thought the upgrade to 11.04 might fix it. But the behavior continues. If I stick a zip disk in the drive, I can write to it as normal...but a flash drive gives me read-only permission unless I open Thunar as root. I don't recall doing anything special with my system, except maybe installing MountManager (I've since removed it, but I'm still getting read-only access).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: /dev/video0 Not Accessible From Firefox/flash Except By Root

Dec 31, 2010

Running Lucid - was an LTS upgrade from 8.04.

I have a usb webcam (off brand). When installed, /dev/video0 is properly created and I can access the webcam through cheese as a regular user.

Code:
crw-rw----+ 1 root video 81, 0 2010-12-31 16:00 /dev/video0

The regular user is already a member of the video group, and I have checked all permissions under System->Admin->User/Groups->Advanced.

However, when as this regular user, I go to a website that tries to access my webcam via flash (ie, chatroulette or omegle), it does not detect the cam. (Firefox 3.6.13 with Flash 10)

I've already set the LD_PRELOAD as suggested elsewhere.

HOWEVER, if I LD_PRELOAD and run Firefox as root, all works fine and the flash plugin sees the webcam.

Now that it's working, I would like to copy the root filesystem from RAM to a NAND flash memory.

Can I just mount the NAND, run "cp -a /* /mnt/nand", reboot with the kernel command line "root=/dev/mtdblock2 rw", and expect Linux to be happy... or is it more involved than this?

Ubuntu :: New EXT3 Partition On Flash Drive Mounts W Root Owner

Jul 20, 2010

I have a flash drive that I use to sync my work- and home-computers. Rsync has occasional issues syncing between FAT32 (which I use on my flash drive b/c it's universal) and EXT3.

I decided to create an EXT3 partition on the flash drive in an attempt to alleviate the rsync woes. My problem is that when I create the partition using GParted, Ubuntu auto-mounts it with Root as the owner. I had GParted check the drive, and it found no errors to repair.

One other weird thing is that the EXT3 partition shows 84.7MB being used immediately after creating the new partition.

The FAT32 partition mounts fine, is read/write, and only shows 4KB used after the new partition scheme.

I tried doing new partitions a number of times, with EXT2, EXT3, and EXT4 just to see if that mysteriously made a difference. Each time that partition would mount w/ Root as owner.

Software :: Using Flash Drive As Root FS At Boot Time Fails

Nov 29, 2008

I have a flash drive that I want to mount as my root filesystem at boot time. When I'm in linux, I can run `mount /dev/sda1 /mnt`, and the kernel will mount the ext3 FS on the flash drive at /mnt with no problems. From this I assumed I could boot my system with the kernel option 'root=/dev/sda1', but this doesn't work. My kernel has no initrd, and is booted directly by a bootloader. It has no modules, so I know that's not the issue.

The current setup that works consists of a ramdisk that the bootloader loads into RAM before booting the kernel. The kernel detects this ramdisk and the current kernel root option ('root=/dev/ram') mounts the ramdisk as the root fs with no problems.I can see where the kernel detects the flash driveat startup, and I can't think of a reason why I couldn't just mount it as root. I can copy/paste startup logs here if necessary.

I tried also with 10.04 LTS, the difference being that the install warning appears two or three times instead of once. I am going to try this but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the boot loader right (there seemed to be problems with this).

Ubuntu :: AMD CPU Runs At Less Than Half Speed?

I have a machine currently running Debian Lenny on which I would like to run Ubuntu for the driver support in its newer kernel. However, I did a test boot from the installation CD and it appears to be running at less than half its rated speed. This is the output from the Debian kernel:

Linux kant 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Wed May 12 18:03:14 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
brendand@kant:~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo

When I turn on the machine it revs up until boot-up is complete, then it shuts off for a few minutes, and then it comes back on and never turns off until I'm through working. Is this strictly a hardware problem, or is there something about Linux that causes the computer to run hot and so causes the fan to work hard? Is there a setting that I could check to see if the fan is working properly? I don't use any exotic programs or run video intensive games, so there's no reason why the computer should run especially hot
