I've just installed Slack 13.1, this was a "clean" install. All seems to be working well except for the dvd-rw, but this is a show stopper, if it doesn't get resolved in a few days I'll have to go back to 13.0.
The drive is detected correctly, but if a cd is mounted it gets errors, and is unable to set it up (it doesn't appear on the desktop).
Here is the info from dmesg:

I have recently mounted my iPod Touch using ifuse, and it works with gtkpod and I'm very pleased about that! However, I'm interested in finding out how openSUSE recognises what devices are mounted? Because the device manager in the task bar doesn't recognise that it's mounted... Dolphin doesn't recognise it and neither does Amarok. Only gtkpod, which is good, but I want other applications to recognise it. Do I need to mount it in a specific location? Currently it's at /mnt/iPhone. Or do I need something in fstab (I'm just guessing here).
there's a program I have that doesn't really install, you extract it to its folder, cd into it, then ./filename to start it. It works fine on my Debian install. But when I do this on Slackware, it just says 'no such file or directory'. The file most definitely is there, since ls shows it. the filename is only three letters long so I know I'm not mistyping it. I've tried in user and su. Any idea why it won't run?
Code: # /etc/profile: This file contains system-wide defaults used by # all Bourne (and related) shells. # Set the values for some environment variables: export MINICOM="-c on"

Note: i downloaded the tar.gz package vim, and did :configure, make , make install, all went well. what else can i do ?
after i update to -current a few days ago. my slack partition cannot be mounted...and after that it's show 'kernel panic'.before i experience that problem, i have encounter an odd problem after i update my slack to -current, after i lock my screen and i want to unlock it, i cannot unlock it, it says 'i must kill kscreenlocker manually'. After that i reboot using root account. then i cannot enter my slackware again.kernel panic in boot screen.Kernel panic: VFS : Unable to mount root fs (8,2)
Writing a bash script and I need to check if a known HD partition is mounted or not. I do not think /etc/mtab is the place to check. Would /proc/mounts always work? To make it simple like this : cat /proc/mounts | grep /dev/sdb2
I have installed slackware 13.1 64-bit version and can not recognize network cards.I'm with laptop acer aspire 7540g.Wireless card is atheros ar5b93.Ethernet card is Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet.
I just did a new install of slack 13.1 and i cant seem to be able to get my wireless card up. my system is a new ish dell laptop,a vostro 3700 to be honest im not even really sure where to start here. if i ifconfig i only get my ethernet and my loopback and if i "iwconfig" i just get told that i have no wireless extensions. yeah not sure what else to add.
I'm running Slacware current. Ran the updates this morning, including kernel 2.6.33.2. I always get nervous about that since something often goes wrong. Sure enough -
trying to boot I get No kewrnel modules found for Linux 2.6.33.2-smp mount: mounting /dev/sda9 on /mnt failed: No such device ERROR: No /sbin/init found on rootdev ( or not mounted ) and failure to proceed with booting. I got an original warning about the initial ram disk being too big to fit and switched to using generic kernel, and yes I did run lilo afterwards and did add the initrd.gz line. I run Ubuntu on the same laptop and have to boot into that and work as chroot in my Slackware partition to try and fix things.
At boot time, before entering Runlevel 3 the HDD will go mad when mounting tmpfs on /dev/shm...
Code:
EXT3 FS on sda1, internal journal EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw) tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw) INIT:Entering runlevel 3
It will go on and on at the tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw) until i press ctrl-C...then I will stop whatever it is doing, let the hdd rest a bit, and resume normal boot..
i have the huawei 1550 3g modem (prepaid) tele2 and a nokia 5800 both working on on other dists, installed vwdial and vwdialconf finds the nokia and and recognize it as a modem.vwdial connects and hang up kppp same story. what is the deal with the phone? i have all the settings right it should really just work. And the usbmodem it seems like i need usb_modeswitch but i cant compile i properly and the slackbuild is broken/old.
After the new year I updated my -current to the latest, and now mutt doesn't recognize my mailcap setting for text/calendar attachments. In ~/.mailcap, I have
text/calendar;korganizer -m %s
and in mutt, .ics attachments are recognised as mime type text/calendar. It's always worked like that. Now, however, mutt is just paging the .ics attachment to the screen.
I've checked the content of all other mailcap files listed in mutt's mailcap path, and ~/.mailcap is the only one with an entry for text/calendar (in fact, ~/.mailcap is the only file in the path that exists). Mutt does recognise my image mime types (eg. image/jpeg;mutt_bgrun geeqie -t %s).
I can import the .ics attachment by hand by saving it to /tmp and running 'korganizer -m /tmp/file' manually. That takes a slight moment to respond (KDE bloat? :-)). When I try opening it from mutt, there is no delay before it pages the file, so I don't think it's even trying korganizer first.
I can't remember changing any configs recently, which is why I'm suspecting something in a recent Slackware update must have affected it.
Long time Slack user, thought I would try to update my old laptop (Toshiba Satellite with AMD K6-2 333 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive) from 10.2 to 13.37 in celebration of the newest version :-)
By update, I mean a complete wipe and reinstall, just to be clear.
So 10.2 runs well, everything looks shiny (XFCE of course) but when I try to install 13.37 I run into trouble. I figured out to boot with huge.s instead of hugesmp.s, but when I try to run 'setup' I get an error that says I have no partitions. mkay, I try fdisk (or cfdisk), but I get literally NO response - no error, no nothing but a return to the command promt. It is exactly as if fdisk does not recognize there is a hard drive there at all.
I boot back into 10.2,check the BIOS, everything looks fine, I have a drive mounted at /dev/hda1, swap at /dev/hda3. Are there some additional parameters I should be booting with? Does it matter that the hard drive is ATA?
I'm attempting to upgrade a server from Slackware 10.2 to Slackware 13.0. When I boot with the Slackware 13.0 Install DVD, fdisk will not recognize the RAID5 array; it complains about being unable to seek on /dev/sda. The system is a SuperMicro motherboard with onboard SCSI and an Adaptec 2005S Zero-Channel-RAID card; it works fine in Slackware 10.2 using the dpt_i20 driver.
I am running slackware-current and using the Novatel usb760 3G modem. before i use kppp to "dial out" I have to eject the device. It works fine except that i periodically get a popup window with:
"Failed to eject "VZAccess Manager Device to unmount is not in /media/.hal-mtab so it is not mounted by HAL."
it happens every 30 minutes to every 10 seconds. anyone ever experience something like this?
Just moved to Ubuntu from XP. Whole process has gone very smoothly, but left with a small problem (i.e. it isn't actually affecting usability) that I don't seem to be able to fix and can't find on forums/internet. I also have a problem with the Floppy drive, but I've seen that problem elsewhere in the forums.
It's a dual boot system with both NTFS and Ext4 drives. All are visible and fully accessible. I decided to convert one of the NTFS drive to Ext4. That appeared to be successful and was successfully remounted as an Ext4 drive. The drive label is "Data". I did have a bit of a problem getting it remounted so that I could see/use it under my log-in as opposed to just under root. It's at this point I think that I did something to create the problem.
I now have two entries for "Data" in drop down menu for Places. The true one is shown as a standard hard drive icon, but the false one is shown as a different icon - possibly an external drive icon (note that the floppy drive is also showing as the same icon and I can't access that, but I've seen that's a problem elsewhere in the forums).
I can write and read to the true "Data" hard drive. If I click on the other false "Data" icon, I get the message "mount: /dev/sdd1 already mounted or /media/Data busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdd1 is already mounted on /media/Data". If unmount the true drive and try to mount the false drive, the system mounts the true drive instead. If I log into nautilus as root, neither the false data drive or the floppy appear in the left hand panel.
I've installed, overwrote, and deleted the partion with US to install again. Each time I could'nt login.I used 2 versions, 9.10 + 8.10. It can't be the login info, but the problem is probably that I hadn't installed any packages, e.g. Mail or Fileserver.Could the HDD not be mounted? I'll attach a GParted screenshot.
For some reason my Windows partition is being automatically mounted under ubuntu 9.10. I would prefer not to mount it, but as it's not included in fstab I don't know how to stop it..
Code: $ cat /etc/fstab # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
i know this is probably a really novice question.. but i can't seem to find where the mount direcotry for my mp3 player is.. its showing up in rhythm box, but when i look in media its not there, and when i click on places its not showing up either..
Concerning an installation of Ubuntu 10.0.4 LST.After update from Update Manager, where a kernel update was installed:
Code: mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/62643a8f-2322-4a0d-07842ff6a26 on /root failed: invalid argument mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory[code[,,....
After this, it opens up BusyBox - when I exit from here, it responds with "Kernel Panic - attempting to kill init."I assumed this means the kernel can't be mounted, but I'm not great with these matters.
Im having trouble sharing a mounted iso in narty. i have mounty installed which is what i use to mount my iso's with and i attempted to share the folder it creates in my home folder over the network to a windows based machine with no luck.
I have server in which I have 2 HDD. One is primary and in it is Linux CentOS. Last week my server stop to work and I reboot it. But after that reboot second mounted HDD in which I backup my files aren't visible at old path. Old path is - I login via SSH and there is folder named SECOND, but now that isn't case. I want to know, how I to see in which folder to enter, which one is for second HDD? I see both, but how to enter in it? And to see what is in it (my old data)?

I am able to burn DVDs with either Brasero or k3b, but opensuse then cannot mount them .Those DVDs do contain the burned data since I can see it and read it on a Mac.Never had any problems reading other DVDs. This is the first time I burn my own DVDs. So is there something particular that I should do when burning in order to make them readable on Linux? What shall I check for? The error message mentions a 'wrong fs type'. I didn't format the DVDs before burning them - just used them as purchased - can that be a problem?
