I've upgraded Slackware-13.1 I had installed to Slackware-Current using a local tree I had download with mirror-slackware-current.sh script, but when I rebooted I could not get the graphics to load. I think it's because I've also modified /etc/groups and add an username after audio: and video: group, but I forgot that and had to remove slackware from the machine.

I'm looking at running -current instead of 13.1, and wondering about 'upgrading' to -current, as well as running multi-lib. I found the following procedures from another post of about a year ago, but I'm not sure from what directory to run such a script:
Code:
# Upgrade to Slackware64-current
upgradepkg --install-new slackware64-current/slackware64/*.t?z
# Download compat32 stuff
[code]....
Should the procedures above work for me? and although I know that things may occasionally break here and there (and get fixed too), are there any known issues right now that would break things on my machine?

I got a new laptop recently, it came with an ssd drive and preinstalled win7. I downloaded the latest gparted livecd and shrinkd the win partitionto make room for slackware (i'll need the win instaltion for a month or so). Slackware current runs very well on it. Except for the strange error when I run Lilo:
Code:
root@tofiks:/boot# lilo
Warning: LBA32 addressing assumed
Added Slack *
Warning: Device 0x0800: Inconsistent partition table, 2nd entry
CHS address in PT: 153:27:3 --> LBA (2315063)
LBA address in PT: 2459648 --> CHS (162:162:3)
Fatal: Either FIX-TABLE or IGNORE-TABLE must be specified
If not sure, first try IGNORE-TABLE (-P ignore)
When I add that option "-P ignore" it installs fine and I can boot.
Code:
root@tofiks:/boot# lilo -P ignore
Warning: LBA32 addressing assumed
Added Slack *
Warning: Device 0x0800: Inconsistent partition table, 2nd entry
CHS address in PT: 153:27:3 --> LBA (2315063)

I have one machine where I have several versions installed on different partitions. The base partition (/dev/hda1) is Slack 12.1. On a spare partition (/dev/hdc4) I had installed Slackware64-current. Last week I slackpkg upgraded and installed the 2.6.32.2 kernel, and now that partition will not boot. I know that with the new kernels the hd* designation has been removed, and have already redone that fstab (accessing it from a different boot) to reflect the sd*. Here is the slack64 section of my lilo.conf:
Code:
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /other/spare4/boot/vmlinuz
[code]....

I've just synchronized my slackware64-current mirror, iso burned, booting, starting cfdisk, creating a partition, and I'm not able to set the partition type to `Linux Raid Autodetect` (FD) or any other, that needs 2 characters to be entered in cfdisk -> Type.Cfdisk alows only one character to be entered ("F" or any other).

using suse 11.3 and kde 4.4.4 on the mounted fat32 partition I cannot change icons partition is mounted in fstab in this way:/dev/sda8/ /dati vfat user, users, gid=users, umask=0002, utf8=true, 0, 0.I can create files folders modify, move and save them on the partition but if I try to change the icon (in dolphin right click>properties>click on icon) of the /eros folder (or any other folder or link) system gives me
this error:impossibile salvare le proprieta' , non hai accesso sufficiente per scrivere su /dati/eros/.directory tha in english is something like this: impossoble save properties, you havent enough permission access to write on /dati/eros/.directory this happen also as superuser I remember that with suse 11.0 or 10.3 I was able to change icons on fat32 partitions, now with 11.3 I cannot, there ought to be a way to do what I did with the previous version with this 11.3 brand new ad more advanced version shouldn't it?

Is there a program that will reread the partition table and update the kernel even if one of the unmodified partitions is mounted? I installed my system on one partition, then I added another with free space. Now I want to format the second partition, but the kernel doesn't know about it yet. I tried sfdisk -R /dev/sda, but it refuses while the root partition is mounted. Is there anyway I can avoid rebooting?

1) Environment:
Ubuntu 10.04
2) Phenomenon:
External hard drives won't be automatically mounted after upgrading some packages...
I have a "not good" habit: I'd love to upgrade whatever suggested by Ubuntu upgrading center every morning.
However, after upgrading some packages for today, my computer won't be able to automatically mount external harddrives, including file systems ext4 and ntfs.
My question is:
1) How can I check what packages have been upgraded just within today?
2) How to make my Ubuntu be able to automatically mount external hard drives whenever I plug in a harddrive as before?

I currently have a server that is running on the Linux kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5xen and I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade it to a new official Red Hat non-xen kernel(currently 2.6.37.1).What is unique about this kernel is that it is NOT a virtual system kernel but an older XEN kernel with proprietary material removed. If it is possible I was wondering about any repercussions that may occur as a result of said update. This would include, any issues with potential data/driver losses as well as recovery procedures that may be used if something would happen to it during the upgrade.

I'm trying to install s3fs but get a configuration warning saying that the current version of s3fs requires fuse 2.8.4 or greater. when I run pkg-config I see that fuse is 2.7.x.I downloaded the source for 2.8.5, configured, make, make installed and it appears to have correctly built the 2.8.5 libraries in /usr/local/lib but after running 'modprobe fuse' and ldconfig with the correct directory settings, pkg-config still says that 2.7.x is the active version and the s3fs configuration see barks about needing 2.8.4 or higher
How do I get the newly compiled version of fuse to be the one the system uses?I want to use s3fs to rsync my sever to Amazon S3.I'm running CENTOS 5.5 i686 standard and have cPanel installed on the machine.

I recently upgraded to slackware-current from Slackware 13 via slackroll, and have only encountered one problem. My file manager no longer thumbnails images, and icons (mostly PNG) aren't appearing no matter what GTK theme is set. Running from the command line produces no errors, and when brought up in something else (say feh /path/to/icon.png) it works perfectly. This is the only hitch I have encountered so far. The same thing happens with emoticons in Pidgin. Does anyone know of a fix?

First time I've done this in awhile Upgrading my Slackware64 -current VM, following the standard routine that has always worked in the past -
Code:
slackpkg clean-system
slackpkg install-new
The clean-system removed 2 packages -
util-linux-ng
eggdbus
Installpkg will no longer work, complaining that the rev command is not found. The problem hit with the removal of util-linux-ng. I cp'd util-linux to ~/. Extracted with tar and executed the doinstall. Fixed.

I've tried a few different ways to install the ATI graphics driver "fglrx" to get 3D acceleration. If I try to install using the standard file "ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run" from the ATI web site it appears to work but then I discover it actually got an error.I saw a reference to ATI requiring 32-bit libraries to install their 64-bit driver. Is there a link or post that explains how to add the 32-bit libraries. Will that solve the problem, or will I just waste more time trying that?

I use Alien Bob's mirror-slackware-current.sh with an excludes.txt to only download the parts of current that I want. Unfortunately it is not working for part of the exclude.txt file and I am at a loss to know why.
The excludes.txt is
Quote:
slackware64/e
slackware64/f
slackware64/kdei/kde-l10n-ar-4.5.5-noarch-3.txt
slackware64/kdei/kde-l10n-ar-4.5.5-noarch-3.txz
[code]...
This ignores e/ f/ y/ testing/ pasture/ source/ and usb-and-pxe-installers/ It also ignores most of kdei/ and /extra It is meant to ignore most of extra/source and just download the source for flash-player-plugin, but it is ignoring all of extra/source/, however the same syntax is working for kdei/ and extra/.

I have been using slackware since version 10.1 and really like it. I have never had a problem until lately, version 13.1 has been stable as a rock for me. The first 2 or 3 updates to current ran well but then the problem started. After installation Slackware would get to the splash screen and bring up the first picture of a disk drive then just hang and never go any further. I do have a good burn on the dvd, have checked the md5 and burned at 4x. then slack 13.37 does the same thing. this is on 4 different computers with several different video boards.

This is not an earth-shattering issue, but, something I've recently noticed with the Chatzilla add-on for Seamonkey in Slackware-current. Maybe it is just my problem. If I add Chatzilla to FF 4.0 everything works as expected, that is, when I launch Chatzilla the default start-up window shows up with a list of IRC servers to click on (freenode being my favourite).
However, when I click on Chatzilla in Seamonkey I get a blank window that shows up, there is no server list. I noticed that the window in Chatzilla went blank for Seamonkey recently after a -current update (maybe a library issue?)

I wish to do a fresh install of Slackware without KDE. I could use my Slackware 13.1 DVD but I thought, why not give -current at try? Is there a -current ISO or must I install 13.1, without KDE, and then upgrade to -current? Or, is it possible to remove 'all things KDE' and then upgrade to -current?

When I powered-up my computer today I received the message that the home partition listed in /etc/fstab cannot be mounted and to press ESC to go to the recovery shell.
My computer is dual-boot, with Windows on the first hard disk (sda) and Ubuntu 9.10 on the second hard disk (sdb); I am using Grub version 1.97 beta4. The home partition is thus on sdb2 and the file system is ext4.
The /etc/fstab file contains all the partitions and has not changed since last October. Also, when issuing the command fdisk l, all partitions are correctly displayed, including the home that cannot be mounted.
Finally, the command fsck /dev/sdb2 quickly returns the result that /dev/sdb2 is clean!

I am trying to actually wipe my entire hard drive and figured it may just be easiest to format the hard drive and deleting the partitions. So when I go to System => Administration => Disk Utility => Select the Hard Drive => Click Delete Partition => And I get the error shown in my screenshots. What would be my best way to delete this partition and remove ubuntu completely for the time being. And yes I am using the latest RC. 10.04. However I don't suspect this is a bug.

This incident happened after I try to encrypt this partition and then an error message appears. If not mistaken, it contains an error number (I forget) and a warning which reads that can not remove the LABEL on the devices.
