View 6 RepliesI have a real system user say 'test', created in a number of system groups, up to 3 additional groups (including ftp of course). Its set to the usual standard directory /home/test. But what if I wanted to use /home/test as their home directory but login to what would be unknown to them to be ProFTP to make them go in say [URL] or something random like that, how is this done? Just been through things like this:
Quote:
<VirtualHost 192.168.0.255>
ServerName "ftp.mydomain.com"
ServerAdmin "me@localhost"
[code]....
But nothing seems to work.
I have an Ubuntu 9.10 server and i need to use an ftp server. I installed vsftp but i can't make it to work. What doesn't work is that can't login to the ftp server with my user(s).I created a user ("AddressBookUser") that should access to some files located on "/var/www/fpt/rubriche/". I set this folder as his home.Here is the row for this user in /etc/passwd:
Quote:
AddressBookUser:x:1001:1002::/var/www/ftp/rubriche:/bin/false
This user is member of the group "rubriche_ro" (and no other groups).This is my /etc/vsftp.conf:
Quote:
listen=YES
#listen_ipv6=YES
#
anonymous_enable=YES
[code]...
vsftpd.chroot_list exists, but as you see above the chroot_list_file directive is disabled.When i try to connect to the FTP server the connections is established but after i insert "AddressBookUser" as user name and confirm i get a "530 permission denied" message. This occurs both from the network (LAN) computers and locally:
Quote:
webs@webs:/etc$ ftp localhost
Connected to localhost.
220 Welcome to WEBS FTP service!
[code]...
I can't figure out what is the problem but my thought was that it's a problem related to the user configuration rather than vsftp configuration, but it's only my supposition. If i try to login with the "main" user of my Ubuntu server, "webs" i can login correctly.
So after installing T-bird 3, I've pointed it to my old profile folder (which had a different name), and all of the settings seemed to be imported fine: I get all the folder and all of mail accounts, and also when I check e-mail, in status bar at the bottom I see how it successfully connects to all my mail servers and checks them. However, there are a lot of issues in the process:
1. It doesn't download any e-mail (but I know for a fact that there is a lot of it)
2. When connecting to every new server, a message asking me to wait while the folder is being processed pops up. Which happens even on the mail check upon the startup when it is certain that this is the first time it check the e-mail.
3. If an indexing feature is enabled, it hangs up with a message "Determining which messages to index in Sent" or something...My total e-mail folder is about 500 MBs, so it shouldn't be that bad, right?
4. But even if that feature is disabled - and that is the most important problem - all of my folders are empty!
Im trying to add users to my nfs server with a specific home directory that already exists. Can this be done? I've done some research on google and other forums but cant seem to find the answer.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do something like thisi created a group called www and made this group the owner of the directory/var/www/htmlso i can read and write to it.of course I've add my self to this group, but it seems i can't read and write.the syntax i used was something like chown :www /var/www/html.didn't workonly when i used chown samurai:www /var/www/html i could finally could create new file.the reason i don't want to specify the user name is because I'm thinking of a scenario when i need to give permission to a large group of ppl and don't want to do it user by user.

Code: Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.live.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact the server administrator.
I have a user who just got a new laptop and when he connects to the FTP server, it verifies his username and password like it should, but when it goes to do the directory listing, it just kinda sits there. if i refresh the view, the folders show up. wonder if there's something in a log somewhere for vsftp i should be looking at. it could just be his ftp client or air card too, but i want to be thorough on the server too becuase it will help me learn.

View 5 Replies View Relatedmy system I want user1 and only user1 to be able to mount and unmount a specific partition, this partition contains backups and is usually mounted read only, needs to be temporarily mounted read/write by user1 while doing the backup.user1 is an unprivileged user. I've read that the user option will let any user mount the file-system (and only that user can then subsequently unmount it) and that the users option allows any user to mount or unmount the file-system.I also found this in mount's man pageQuote:The owner option is similar to the user option, with the restriction that the user must be the owner of the special file. This may be useful e.g. for /dev/fd if a login script makes the console user owner of this device. The group option is similar, with the restriction that the user must be member of the group of the special file.So it looks like I'd need a login script for that user to make the user owner of the device file (/dev/voiceserv/backup in this case)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup an Apache server on my computer which will allow browsing of files in a specific directory and subdirectories, without needing any sort of authentication.
I've got the Apache2 server up and running through yast, and everything works fine as long as I try to point it to the /www/htdocs folder. However, I want to point it at another folder, which is on another partition. This partition is formatted as NTFS, if that matters at all (here's some background on some permissions issues I had with the NTFS partitions recently).
When I change the "Directory" setting in the Yast http server configuration utility to the directory on the NTFS partition I wish to use, attempting to access the server results in the following error:
Code: Access Forbidden: You don't have permission to access the requested directory. There is either no index document or the directory is read-protected. If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

I've setup a Lamp Server for Testing, The Lamp Server is Up & Running on CentOs 5.5
I am now trying to setup a VSFTP server where local users can upload files to there home directory so that Apache can serve web pages straight from the directories of system user home/accounts giving users the ability to run their own web sites which are hosted off the main server [tutorial here: [url]
So far i have been able to serve/display index.html files from the users home directory [url] but so far i cant upload files to any user home directory, every time i try to upload a file with filezilla i get this error message: 553 Could not create file. Critical file transfer error
I have searched online for similar problems like mine and so far i've tried alot of the solution but none seem to work. I'm confused, dont know where i went wrong, i put the users in a group called ftpusers and here are the permissions on the users (test, ftpuser & testftp) home directory. have a look an tell me where i went wrong :(
Also the root directory where the web pages are served from is called public_html here are the permissions
Here is my vsftp.conf file can someone check it to see if i made any errors in there:

I've been tried to be system admin, programmer, network admin, or network engineer. So, I've been studying this and that... what so ever struggling to find my talent. Back in 2007-2008, I was MS server admin/comm tech. I saw a building running MS server for user computers and Red Hat 9 as a main system server. MS sever was a just one of the user accounts of Linux server. When I log in to Linux, I could see log menu to access MS server. How could somebody make this creative thing?I'm now a Network engineer because working with CISCO router and switch is easier than working as programmer or server admin. I've studied Oracle 10 and VMWARE also but there are ceasless stuffs that I need to study... For now, in regards of my limited brain power, network engineer is proper for me.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just configured a Directory Server and I have been able to login using the credentials as a Directory Manager on the server.
I am working on the server through VMWare.
After logging into the server, when I am trying to add a user, say "user1" I am unable to do so, in the name of the user name field, all I can see is a "u" and not the complete user name, the same thing happens in case I try to setup a password, so i really don't know whether the password that I am setting up is being accepted or not.
Also while trying to add a user, i can see the logs running in the background on the terminal, that a java program is running as I typing or clicking on any button.
Can someone suggest me what to do to proceed ahead, I know its a strange issue, but I have to do it.
I need to setup a way for our Web Developer to login to this particular server to manage the webpages that are hosted. He prefers to use his ftp client/fireftp since he connects to all other servers that way. I can connect via local network but can not seem to connect from my home computer. We have a firebox firewall and we opened port 21. Do we need to open any other ports or just port 21?

I have a file server on my network. It is accessed mainly by linux machines throught NFS, but sometimes I need to access it from windows, and I managed to get Samba up and running with only one share with no password, which is what I want.My users have their "private" folders which are just chmodded 700, and under NFS it works fine, but on samba I get, of course, access denied.How can I configure samba so that it asks a password to access those directory? They can become separate shares, and have their own username and passwords (not the ones in /etc/passwd in the server), I don't care.
