when I try to add a user it fails to make the corresponding home directory. I can still su to the user, set the password, and everything else. the output is as follows:
$ useradd username
useradd: cannot create home directory /home/username
I read that this could be a result of there not being enough space but if I do df -h, i see that only 88% of the memory is being used.
I have a secondary disk which holds a /home directory structure from a previous install of Linux. I installed a new version on a new primary drive and mounted this secondary drive as the new /home. Problem is, even though the users are the same names and I can access the home directories for the users, I cannot login directly to their home directories, as I get the following error: -

Now, since the usernames are correct and the users are in the passwd file with the correct home directory paths, could it be user ID's that are different or something else? It's not as though I cannot access the home directories for the users, simply that I cannot log directly into them from a login prompt.
I'm developing an application in which one user must run java software that I'm compiling as another user. I wanted to give user A permission to see the bin direcory of my workspace, which is in the home directory of user B. I was wondering how can this be done? I gave the bin direcotry full read/execute premissions, but since it's in my home directory user A can't navigate to it.
I know there are a few ways I could get around the problem but they arn't very elegant. I was wondering if there is a simple method for giving a user access to a specific directory without giving access to all the parent directories. I tried symbolic link but user A still can't access it, and a hard link to a directory isn't allowed in Linux. I don't feel like making a hard link to every single file in the bin directory, and I'm not sure that would work anyways, since every recompile overwrites them.
i'm new to linux and just installed Ubuntu and decided to play around with it. i just executed
Code: useradd test which supposedly creates a folder in the home directory '/home/test' but when i look in there i can't see it i also did a
Code: grep test /etc/passwd which returns: 'test:x:1001:1001::/home/test:/bin/sh' which i believe means it is meant to exist.
Addendum: I have also now noticed that when i log in and log back in i have the option to login as 'test' but it prompts me for a password which i did not set :s
I was just exploring if i could create a normal user without a home directory. So i edited the file /etc/defaults/useradd and it now shows

In a script thats invoked by the makefile, I use 'useradd' command & this updates the shadow, passwd files under /etc on the host, is it possible to tell the command to create the shadow / password under some other folder on the host? may be /tmp?

Here's what I do know. The command "ls -ld /home/user's_name" will give me the info I need for #1. And the command "du -hs" will give me the info I need for #2. What I don't know is how to grab each individual directory in order to apply the above commands to each of them in order. ???

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge.
The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg
cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home
export HOME=~/testing/home
cd ~
screen -S testing-home
# start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc.
# test revisions
However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about?
Proftpd is installed and running fine on 8.04 server. I want to streamline the process of adding users. Adding a ftp user with USERADD fails (user is created but connection fails when trying to connect with ftp client).

It's a bother because I want to automate the process, and ADDUSER has all those prompts and asks for the password twice.
I've done a low level format on them so they're completely empty. When I use them with my windows machines, they're absolutely fine. When I plug them into my Ubuntu machine, there is a hidden directory created called 'RECYCLER' which I'm assuming is for deleted files?However, it also creates a .exe file in this directory called 0x2D9FA278 which has an Icon with an H in it and a comment of 'Facebook Photo' This has the effect of making all the directories on the stick into shortcuts! I googled the file name and it seems to be some sort of Trojan, but I don't understand how it's go into my Ubuntu machine, I've scanned with ClamAV and it finds nothing.

Say if i have user1 till user5 on my NFS server with their home directory under the /home and the /home directory is shared. If user1 logs into a client machine then will he be able to see home folders for the other users or just his own home folder. Because in the /etc/exports file there was an option saying "subtree" and according to my understanding this means that the subdirectories under /home will also be shared. Does that mean all the users should be able to see all other users home directory and its contents but not read/write?? Correct me if iam wrong.
