Even simple directroy pages are served in around 5 sec, and this is not a joke! It used to work pretty fast. What I have changed is that i replaced a hub with a switch, and that I linked my personal PC with my server together through a hub. I also installed Gnome desktop on the webserver machine. My network now looks like follows:

We use Magento for our online shopping cart, and one of the things we've been focusing on is how to make it faster. Magento is known for being slow sometimes, although there are things that can be done to help with that. One thing I'm wondering is whether the Linux distribution we're using can help speed things up a bit. Right now we're using Ubuntu. I've been wondering if Gentoo could help, since it can compile everything and allows for good optimization when compiling and installing software. I had used Gentoo myself for a little while about 6 years ago and noticed it seemed a bit faster than other distros. My question is, what would be the fastest Linux distro for a web server?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I download fast and much my server freeze however if I don't download anything the server can run for weeks without problems but as soon I start downloading fast it doesn't take long until the server freeze again, I mean totally frozen so I have to manually power it down and then turn it on again. This started happening recently I think it started happening after I updated to 9.10 it have always worked perfectly before. Is there anyway to fix this? If not is there a way to downgrade back to 9.04 or 8.10 where everything were working fine?

Its not like its happening every time, but 7 times out of 10.
Any idea how can make the authentication fast?
I have a fileserver running 10.04 server 64bit and samba. I connect it to my desktop which is 10.04 desktop 64bit.I have the server mounted on my desktop in fstab as://10.0.0.2/share /media/share cifs guest, uid= 1000.Up until 30 June 2010 it was all fine. Now when I write the server it is very slow e.g. 2Mbps though when I read I get >100Mbps so I think my network is still ok. If i use nautilus smb://10.0.0.2/share I can write at >100Mbps and also read at >100Mbps...So any ideas why the write speed via the fstab mount samba has started to go really slowly in the last couple of days?

My system is SUSE 11.1 I want to see who is connected via SSH. For instance, I have users connected using FileZilla. I can see in th e/etc/var/messages that they authenticated/connected, but I can't see if they have since disconnected or not.
Also, about 3 years ago I used to use Fedora for my SSH and in the sshd_config I'd make custom logs for each account, specify which user accounts were possible, port number, etc, etc. Is this possible to do using the SUSE linux? Any links on how to do this on suse? I haven't used linux in 3 years and can't find my old sshd_config files to take a glance...I did look at the sshd_config on SUSE, but it looks very different.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to setup a Linux File Server for a small windows network (around 50 users). I do know that I am gona need Smb service/pkg for that. I haven't used Samba for a while now and as per the best of my knowledge, entire communication (including usernames and passwords) between a samba server & windows client machines will be plain text. Is there any way to secure all this communication??
Secondly, if i remember correctly, MS windows wont let me mount more than one samba shares as network disk when all my shares can be accessed by different smb users with different passwords?? is there a solution to this problem? OR may be if there is any other package available for this purpose so that i wont have to use samba?

My Computer options arent great, but i am going to be starting the process of switching all the computers in my house to linux, i wanted to see if i could make a server to connect all of them for file sharing, but mostly for world of warcraft in the house.it would only be 10 computers accessing it at once. i would basically want to know what the best form of linux would be, the programs id need to have, if it could be done on a desktop based machine, or if id have to use my server. if i would need different hardware or if the linksys hardwired router going to be enough connection. i guess the filesharing would be more the pressing need, especially if it is possible to create a server and convert the connected computers to linux through use of the server

I have bought an Intel NUC pc with Debian with debian-7.9.0-amd64-netinst installed. After using for a short while I have noticed that it makes my broadband stop. Once I unplug it the broadband is OK again. I have tried everything but can't find a solution.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just reinstalled debian on my computer, I've had it working for a long time, only difference is I used to have Cable Internet and now I use DSL. Anywho, I reinstalled debian from the kde CD on the debian website, it auto-configured my network out of the box. My network is connected to the computer, pinging google works perfectly, and ifconfig shows that eth0 is working correctly without any errors. However on both Konqueror and Iceweasel, every time I try to connect to a website, it tells me the server cannot be found. Basically it acts like I don't have internet. Using the terminal works though, I have installed KDE-FULL from the terminal and wicd, so I know I do have internet. I don't know what it could be, like I said, I installed from the cd and this happened. Maybe there's a bug on the KDE debian cd

I want to set up a home / file / torrent / web / print server at home. I am using a dell optiplex gx240 and my printer is a Epson dx8400. Scanning would probably be the hardest part I guess.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThe "MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC" error message shows up on boot on at least one of my RHEL servers, and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. My understanding of the situation is that the timer is located elsewhere on the motherboard than where the kernel looks for it. Is this correct?
I've come across people suggestin one should disable APIC by adding "noapic" to the kernel boot options, but which consequences does this imply - in SNP setups only one CPU will be used by the kernel?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a VPS from Providerservice and I am their customer for over a year now. They've been great throughout the year. They had awesome support and awesome Network quality. I Host GameServers and since the last month, my Servers have been giving big lag jerks to all the clients connected. Like one big lag jerk every 5 minutes. When such a thing happens, the first thing I usually check is the Network. From 10 different machines, I did MTR traceroutes and there was not even a single packet that was lost so I was sure that the Network is not causing it. I observed my CPU usage, RAM usage, HDD usage and everything was normal but GameServers still lagged. Now today, I reloaded a complete new Debian OS and copied the Game Server files exactly from my other machines.
There was no extra program or software installed on the server, but that didn't help remove the Lag. So now I'm sure its not my VPS that causes it. Such a thing happened with me before. No Network packets were being lost and my VPS showed CPU/Ram/HDD to be normal. I asked my Provider and they said one of our user is spiking the CPU with a large number of SQL queries and that's why your lagging. But I talked to this company, they've checked their Host machine and they see nothing wrong with it. According to them, everything is normal at the Host machine. So we are short of ideas on what to do and that's why I'm here to take some expert opinions, the following things are for sure :
-> My Game Server files are exactly as I run on other machines without Lag and even on the current machine 1 month ago without Lag.
-> The VPS itself is not causing the Lag.
-> I've checked Network and no packets are loss, not sure about any difference between ICMP or UDP packets since the game is UDP.
The most probable thing is the Host machine itself. This usually happens when the Game Server falls out of resources and gets stuck.
