Ubuntu :: Samba Slow Writes To Server But Fast Reads

Jul 1, 2010

I have a fileserver running 10.04 server 64bit and samba. I connect it to my desktop which is 10.04 desktop 64bit.I have the server mounted on my desktop in fstab as://10.0.0.2/share /media/share cifs guest, uid= 1000.Up until 30 June 2010 it was all fine. Now when I write the server it is very slow e.g. 2Mbps though when I read I get >100Mbps so I think my network is still ok. If i use nautilus smb://10.0.0.2/share I can write at >100Mbps and also read at >100Mbps...So any ideas why the write speed via the fstab mount samba has started to go really slowly in the last couple of days?

CentOS 5 :: RAID 10 "slow" Reads But Good Writes

Feb 28, 2011

I have a 6 disk mdadm RAID 10 array of Western Digital RE3 drives. IOZone and all the other tools I have tried are showing pretty lackluster reads for a six drive RAID 10 array, in the area of 200MB/s. Writes are closer to what I'd expect in that area, around 340MB/s. These drives fly with an Adaptec RAID controller, but as soon as I stick them in an mdadm array, the reads just aren't what I'd expect.

I am using what I believe to be optimal settings:

-C /dev/md2 --chunk=1024 -n 6 -l 10 -p f2 /dev/sda5 /dev/sdb5 /dev/sdc5 /dev/sdd5 /dev/sde5 /dev/sdf5
-b 4096 -E stride=256,stripe-width=768

Server :: Apache Server Extreme Slow, While Samba Server Is Extreme Fast?

Jan 12, 2010

I have changed my home network a bit, and everything works extremely fast, except for my apache server, which seems to serve webpages so slowly, it is abnormal. Even simple directroy pages are served in around 5 sec, and this is not a joke! It used to work pretty fast. What I have changed is that i replaced a hub with a switch, and that I linked my personal PC with my server together through a hub. I also installed Gnome desktop on the webserver machine. My network now looks like follows:

OpenSUSE :: Very Slow Writes To NTFS Partitions

Aug 30, 2010

I have two ntfs partitions I use to store music and data. I've been using them in all my linux boxes without any problems. Simply use Ntfs-3g with noatime and everything works great.

However, since the update to OpenSuse 11.3 writing to my NTFS partitions takes FOREVER. I've specified noatime, relatime and norelatime successively without success. The partitions have plenty of space and are defragmented.

When copying large files, It starts fast at first, but in the last hundred MB it slows down to about 1.5MB/s. Even after the transfer is supposedly done, the HD led remains on and all other read/write activity involving the partition is completely halted.
This can take between 5 minutes to 10 or more depending on the size of the file. When copying several small files, (100 MB or less) it starts at about 1.5MB/s from the beginning.

I have the latest versions of fuse and ntfs-3g installed

Ubuntu Networking :: File Server On 10.04 Machine - Slow Samba

May 22, 2010

I'm trying to set up a fileserver on my 10.04 machine, and access the files from Windows 7 via wifi. I can see everything alright, but the transfer speed to Windows never gets higher than 70KBps. Both computers can access the web at 800+KBps. I've also checked with an OS X machine on the same network, which was also extremely slow, so I'm fairly sure that the problem is on the server's side.

Ubuntu :: Internet Connection Very Slow On 9.10 But Fast In XP

Mar 23, 2010

Like the title, that is my problem. I'm using cable modem with 3mbps. It is Linksys Docsis, wired networking. When I download a file using ubuntu 9.10, my latency time (ping time) sky rocketed to 2000ms average, while in XP none of this happens; I tried to download the same file from the same website. In ubuntu 9.10 my network setup will be, well... nothing. I'm using DHCP automatic detection. Same thing in XP.

I don't want to go back and forward using XP for the internet. Funny thing though, none of this happens while I first started ubuntu 9.10. I didn't configure anything with networking. It is the way it is from the beginning. The only thing I tried was ubuntuone. But that like months ago, and the problem I have with slow internet connection only appear this March.

Fedora Networking :: F14 Samba Server With Slow Write Speed

Aug 4, 2011

I had a F14 samba server working flawlessly now for a quite time. Unexpectedly about a month ago the write speed slowed down around 64kbit/s and that's really slow. I haven't changed any configs, only updated the server. I've troubleshooted this from many angles:
-It is not a network issue because sftp writes are good.
-It is not a RAID1 issue because write speed from another directory (locally) are good.
So basically samba is the only thing left.

Here's example from smb.conf:
[MyShare]
comment = My share
path = /mnt/RAID_share
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
writelist = +smbuser

Here's a snip from logs today:
[2011/08/04 09:04:27.509273, 1] smbd/server.c:267(remove_child_pid)
Scheduled cleanup of brl and lock database after unclean shutdown

[2011/08/04 09:18:17.635196, 1] smbd/server.c:240(cleanup_timeout_fn)

There's a restart that is not software related.

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow Browsing - Fast Download ?

Chromium/Firefox seems to hang forever on "connecting.." or "waiting for". Sometimes pressing the reload button will speed it up. I have two Ubuntu boxes and they are the same way.

I don't get it, if downloading is so fast, how can browsing be so slow. Yes I have disabled ipv6 in grub and in Firefox, don't know how to do it in Chromium. Have 64-bit Ubuntu. Cnet wlan card using rt61pci module.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Playback Slow In 10.04 But Fast In 9.04?

May 14, 2010

I have two Ubuntus installed. A 10.04 and a 9.04. In 9.04 if I watch a video in Firefox, it works very smoothly and nicely. Using the "top" command, totem-plugin-vi is using the most cpu time at about 16%, and xorg is using about 5%. But in 10.04, totem is using 72% and xorg is using 26%, and it looks really choppy. I think watching DVDs is the same way. I checked "Hardware Drivers" in the System->Administration menu (in 10.04) and it said "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system." I'm guessing maybe I'm using different video drivers on each system, but I don't even know how to check. and here is an excerpt from lspci:

Server :: Slow Speed While Connecting To Samba File Shares From Vista

Mar 6, 2010

I have set up a file server (Ubuntu Server Edition) for our lab. People can connect to common Samba file shares from their personal laptops/desktops, which run either Windows Vista or Mac OSX. The guys with OSX have upload/download speeds of ~2 MB/s, while the Vista machines are slogging away at ~200kb/s for downloads and ~400kb/s for uploads. In both cases, the connection are through wired ethernet ports which should function identically. Since the Macs work fine on the same network, I assume this is a Vista issue.

I have tried troubleshooting one of the Vista machines by:
1. Turning off the Remove Differential Compression feature
2. Disabling autotuning following these instructions
3. Adding a registry key following the same link above.

But nothing has improved. Anybody have any advice on addition tweaks to the Vista machine? Is there a chance that this is actually a server-side/samba issue?

Debian :: Fast Bandwidth And CPU But SLOW X11 Forwarding

Sep 26, 2010

I have a fast server running Debian 5 (I tried to upgrade and everything broke.

So I'll stay with Lenny):
Core 2 Duo
4Gb RAM
RAID 0
100mbit

When I use the -X command and try and run applications to my desktop, it is VERY slow. Firefox takes 20 seconds+ just for a right-click menu to appear. It is completely unusable because of this speed. And this is after a clean install of Debian 5.

I've tried on multiple clients (Windows and OS X) and it is always slow! Even though both computers and connections are fast. My home connection is 100mbit too....

So the problem is not bandwidth or resources, the problem must be with the server/software? Any ideas why tunneling X11 applications are so slow? Is there an alternative X11 software I could use on the server?

1 thread in FTP to this server gives 10MB/s (100mbit). So X11 should be fast? And btw, I'm tunneling through SSH.

Can figure out why it is so slow?

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow Wifi - But Fast Connection On Network Cable

Jan 22, 2011

I have a strange problem that I cannot diagnose -- slow wifi. About two or three weeks ago, I noticed that my wifi began to slow down dramatically. The problem is the same on my ubuntu laptop and my ipad. But when I connect directly to the router with a network cable, my connection is fine. So it is definitely a problem with the wifi signal itself.

What I have done so far:
(1) I checked all of the MAC addresses connected to my wifi. I identified my tivo box, laptop, and ipad. Nothing else.

(2) I used [I]wifi analyzer[I] on my android phone and selected an unused wifi channel (channel 8).

(3) I changed the username/password on my wifi signal. I also changed the password for my router's admin privileges.

(4) I restarted my router and computer.
None of this helped.

I am using a Netgear WGR614 wireless router.

Ubuntu Servers :: IOwait High, No Disk Writes, Server Hangs?

Jul 24, 2011

I run a website that a very steady flow of traffic and Im seeing recent issues that I just dont like. Server is 10.04.2 on a supermicro i7-950/6gb RAM with two 500gb Samsung F3 drives in a software RAID1 (1x5400, 1x7200) and for several weeks, its been running very well. Recently, Im seeing the server hang for 5-20 seconds. IOwait goes through the roof, nothing can write to the disk. Apache logs stop, redis fails to rebuild caches, mysql errors and then it continues and moves back to normal operation

/ is ext4, the kernel was 2.6.32-server-x64 but since updating to 2.6.38-server-x64, the issue has dropped from maybe once per 10 minutes to once per 15 minutes. 3 IOstat copy/pastes show this when it hangs.

Code:

Total DISK READ: 0.00 B/s | Total DISK WRITE: 0.00 B/s
TID PRIO USER DISK READ DISK WRITE SWAPIN IO> COMMAND

[code]...

No smart errors or smart diags show any issues with any of the disks and kernel.log shows near nothing other than a process hang, 120 seconds about 5 days ago.

The only thing which is quite odd - is that the Printer Properties dialogue takes more than 30 seconds to come up - and every action you attempt with the dialogue takes a similar amount of time.

Networking :: Slow Outbound - Fast Outbound Cross Country Connection

Jun 2, 2011

I'm having an issue where a server in CA (1000/full) and in VA (100/full) have very lopsided data transfer.

CA -> VA with iperf shows ~20Mbps
VA -> CA with iperf shows ~93Mbps

If we change the CA server to 100/FULL, transfer speed is 93Mbps both ways.

Some tuning was done to TCP window scaling parameters, but it won't correct the issue, just improve the CA -> VA numbers to what is listed above. I will say, turning TCP window scaling OFF will lower the transfer speed both ways to < 20Mbps.

The only clue I have when looking at wireshark dumps is that the window scale going OUT would never go past 10240 (scale is 8, so 2^8 x 40bytes). In the opposite direction, the window size will go above 3MB (scaled).

It is not a bandwidth problem as iperf with UDP shows 93Mbps both ways. Local transfers (CA 1000/full to CA 100/full) show full speed both ways, so I feel it is strictly related to TCP window scaling.

RedHat 5 64-bit on both sides. Any ideas why it won't scale above 10240?
