I have installed ubuntu server 10.04 and also compiled manually a new version of kernel. The problem is I can not see the grub boot loader page that allow me to select which should be started. On a desktop however grub boot page is shown by default. How can I enable that in server?
View 5 RepliesI have just installed Linux on a partition of my hard drive. Computer boots up and gives me the grub boot screen where I can choose from: ubuntu, some memory tests and windows recovery environment (loader). But no Windows Vista. When I boot the windows recovery option the windows boot loading screen comes up but then the screen turns blank but the hard drive is still working and the wifi light also comes on my keyboard. Ubuntu is working completely fine I just need to find a way of getting Grub to display Vista instead of the Recovery environment.

When I boot slackware, I have all the boot process that run but too fast. I don't have time to read what's running. Is there a way to to go page by page. I didn't find any key in my keyboard to stop and go.
View 16 Replies View RelatedHave just installed Ubuntu 11.04, the system is to dual boot with XP.Ubuntu is installed, have been into it and it seems to be working fine. However, when I bootup the computer I get no "Grub!" [Grub is now going to take over the boot process textual alert]. And, once the system gets past that screen, there is no list of Operating Systems to boot choices. Just boots straight into Ubuntu - always.
Solved that by installing 'Startup Manager' (which I knew about from slight previous exposure to Linux) and set the default operating system to Windows XP - this means that now I can't get into Ubuntu.How do I get Grub to show that 'Grub alert'? And how do I get Grub to offer choices of OS to boot in to?

I have 3 hard drives and have Ubuntu installed on one (sdb), had windows vista installed in the other (sda) and use the other (sdc) as a back up/extra space. I just deleted the windows vista partition and formatted the hard drive (ext4) and now just use Ubuntu, however, in the grub boot, vista and recovery is still showing up. How can I clean the grub up and delete these entries. I've searched all over the place, googled like crazy and all I can find is how to get rid of grub or reinstall the MBR of vista (etc). One more thing, how can I permanently mount the new empty hard drive in Ubuntu so that I have access to it all the time w/out having to mount it.

The problem is the top gnome panel. See the photo below: As you can see, the network icon is not shown properly while the Me menu is being shown twice. I can't even restart or log out or shut down at this situation without pressing the keystroke to turn the power off.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI updated my GRUB config. I reordered some menu items and set openSUSE as default OS.When I boot into openSUSE, I am no longer greeted by Geeko when openSUSE is loading. I only see text from the boot procedure scroll by like it's still the 90s. While there's a certain coolness in seeing openSUSE switch to runlevel 5 and all that jazz, I want my chameleon back.A few weeks ago, I configured openSUSE to boot with flag vga=0x3ef so that it would boot with my preferred resolution immediately. This used to work fine. Since this morning, openSUSE crashes when X is attempting to start. I can still boot into openSUSE by removing that flag, but even then I still don't see the chameleon.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having the weirdest thing with F13. I HAD a HP 8430 with docking station and external 22" monitor. Worked well, using the RADEONHD drivers. Now I have a HP 8530p laptop. At startup, as soon as the login would show, the screen (both laptop lid and external display) go black. To resolve, I have to disconnect the DVI connector to be able to see the login screen. After initialization of the laptop display (showing login screen) I can connect the DVI connector again.
When I'm logged in and have the DVI connector connected again, I go to GNOME monitor preferences and see, besides my laptop display, my external display, not once but TWICE. if I enable the wrong one, my screen goes black again. If I enable the right one, my external display works as expected. I made sure that the monitor is connected only ONCE with DVI.
I'm using a freshly installed F13 with the default setup, so RADEONHD is being used. My laptop has the following video device (from lspci): 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3650. The bad thing is I don't know where to go for analysis to get this fixed... any hints?
When I try to install Ubuntu OS everything works well to the last step. At last step it ask me for my user name while it is installing the OS at background. Then it says "ready" but nothing change. I can move mouse over the screen but there is nothing to push like "finish installation button" or something like that. I wait for 2 hours and nothing changed. There is no error code. Then I decide to reset Pc and try to see if it installed grub or not, but there is no grub at booting page. I started to OS installation again and same problem occur for 6 trials. I have intel i3 proccessor with graph card and gigabyte h57m-usb3 motherboard. OS: Ubuntu 10.10.

From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

View 2 Replies View Relatedi'm tying to dual boot Vista64 (already installed) and Fedora 10 x86_64. I am running a Dell XPS 410 running 2 sata hard drives raid 0 (ICH8DH). I started the process by shrinking my C drive on disk0 leaving 64.45GB of unallocated space. Next I rebooted into Fedora install DVD and when i get to blue graphical install screen i get message asking if my drive is GPT and if it is it may be corrupted. I click NO, and it comes up with a message telling me i have to initialize my drive if i want to use it ( have to click NO twice) and if i do it i will lose all my data.
i can click no and keep proceding through the install until i get to the partition setup screen. No hard drives or partitions are shown. I've tried googling the problem and get bits of pieces of information scattered in different parts but nothing conclusive to my problem i think. As far as my background of knowledge goes, I'm new to the linux community but give me a thorough guide and i'll do fine (i hope). I've been using fedora on a separate laptop for 2 days now .
I just tried to updated my UBUNTU 10.04 to 10.10.I missed the page where I was asked to reuse the current GRUB information.The system hung after trying to load the new GRUB.I rebooted, and got an error about Configuration defaults for gnome power configuration not correct.I googled this, and have lost of disk space. The other suggestion was to remove and reinstall the gnome power app.I am not sure if this is the real problem, or if it is something to do with GRUB.There is some information on the system that I don't want to loose. I can get to a system console.

When i turned that Server PC on earlier , it goes straight into user login screen of ubuntu server. But right now i see the grub menu list which is expecting the keyboard Enter input. how do i remove that so later on i don't need to plug the keyboard and hit enter to goto server login ?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently tried to clone a RHEL 4 system and migrate it to some different hardware (IBM Blade to an IBM x3650M2 rack mount). I'm getting an error when it tries to boot up. It gets past the grub part, but then errors out quickly with this error code...
I've done this before, but the other system I migrated didn't have a separate "/" and "/boot" partition. I think this may be why it's having an issue. It seems like "/boot" is actually /dev/sda1 and "/" is /dev/sda2 (from booting up RHEL rescue disk). I've tried changing fstab and grub.conf, but I think I may be missing something.
I have installed Windows Server 2003 after CentOS. Then GRUB boot loader lost. Is there a way I can install GRUB boot loader from Windows?

This morning I was configuring a DNS server through Yast at home, I've done it once before (in another wireless lan)and it works perfectly. But this morning, after I clicked "start dns server now", everything freezed, and caps lock light on keyboard kept flashing. I rebooted laptop,it couldn't boot into run level-5 and there were few "skipped" items and "failed" items displayed.... Sorry I'm new to linux so I re-installed it this afternoon, and kept /home partition, formatted / partition.
Everything seems to be fine after re-installation, again I tried configuring a DNS server and clicked "start dns server now", but the same problem appeared, caps lock light kept flashing and I rebooted the laptop but fortunately this time it didn't fail on any items when booting
In Yast-Network Settings, I choose "use controlled with network manager", and I can connect to wireless router and browsing web, but there are no any interfaces shown in Yast-Firewall, and this time, after I clicked "start dns server now", nothing happens, dns server just won't start...

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm moving an office intranet server to a new machine running CentOS 5 with apache 2.2.3. Everything worked fine on my old CentOS server and nothing new or fancy being tried on the new machine: default server, no name virtual hosts etc.. However, on the new server I can only see the index.html page when I browse to it. Index.html is a frameset which calls other pages to load from subfolders to /var/www/html. The frameset loads but in each frame I see "The requested URL /hot_stuf/data_colm.html (etc.) was not found on this server.".
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire one which runs ubuntu 10.04. Recently it has developed a problem upon loading it where the screen will not stop flickering and won't allow me to see anything, let alone try to solve the problem. I did have a good google session and found that others have had this problem before, but I couldn't find a solution that worked. I decided to install the newest version via bootable usb and originally try SysLinux but for some reason it would not work, so I have since tried other programs to create a bootable usb. My problem is that whichever software I use, whenever I boot from the usb I get the original SysLinux page and cannot move from there.
Has SysLinux somehow changed the mbr of my usb stick? I'm basically stuck and this is my only non-essential usb so I don't want to use another one.
P.S. sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forum, I wasn't sure where to put it.
On FC11 64 bit with Adobe flash plugin for Linux installed, I see segfault errors from "npviewer" in /var/log/messages. The only browser I have tried yet, Firefox, has glitches every now and then. Sometimes it shows the title of a page in a tab, but the page is blank. This can even happen when I try the Google main page. Is it true that npviewer has something to do with Adobe flash? Is there a way to fix the problem? If it is caused by Adobe flash, is there a different plugin that will replace Adobe flash player?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi am able to try ubuntu and everything works fine until i try to install. the menu comes up to the first page where it tells you to plug in your machine and make sure there is enough disk space and network connectivity. when i hit next on this page the mouse icon changes but the next page never loads. the longest i let it hang there was 2 hours. ive tried multiple times with the same result.

I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are
