Server :: Find A .ovm Format Image Of A Windows Server Installation?
Sep 16, 2010
I currently run Windows Server 2008 at my office, but I'm looking to test Samba as a PDC for future reference/consulting work. Before I go and try to configure Samba, I wanted to ask if anyone can think of pitfalls I would run into and perhaps recommend a better setup:
<10 PCs running either Windows XP, Vista, or 7.
VirtualBox running Debian (planning on swapping for Fedora) on a Windows XP Home computer.
Computers are connected to a large switch, which is connected to a wireless router. The Windows server doesn't employ ICS (essentially is just a $1500 PDC ). where I could find a .ovm format image of a windows server installation? I'm guessing vmware would work in this regard, but I'm not fond of using purposely crippled software.

I installed Apache server with Debian 5.0.2 Lenny. I am trying to write a script which would analysis web log files. I found the log files on /var/log/apache2. There is an access log file, `access.log`. My question is what configuration file determines the location and the name of the access log file. How can I change them? I used CustomLog in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf like below.LogFormat ": %h %l %u %t "%r" %>s %b" common
CustomLog /home/test/my_log_file common Apache2 generated /home/test/my_log_file. But no logs were written in the file even after I run `/etc/init.d/apache2 restart`. Ichanged the log file location. It still didn't work. However, Apache2 still wrote logs in the file `/var/log/apache2/access.log`

I have a fresh install of COS5.6 installed a test laptop. I have following instructions to set up the PXE server based on the following: http:[url]......The base PXE installation seems to work fine (The menu labeled CentOS 5.6 works fine ). The whole purpose of this was to be able to boot iso's like Hirens and Imaging software ISO's.The issue is that whenever i try to pick an iso from the list it just says "Could not find ramdisk image:" [path to iso][path to iso] being either of the two iso i had set up to test this.
I would like to think that i made a typo but i can find one. The files i used are from the source of syslinux v4.0.4.The following information should be pertinent
Contents of /tftpboot/pxelinux.0/default[code].....
I have a limited experice with linux in an enterprise environment and looking for any direction as to what to do about this.

We are running samba on a Fedora release 8 (werewolf). The samba server is located on a dmz subnet off of my Cisco ASA 5510 firewall. From my inside network I have no problems connecting to the samba shares. However when someone uses a VPN connection they cannot connect to the samba share. VPN users are assigned an address from a pool which has no problems getting to the dmz based samba server. All ports required are open on both firewalls (Samba server and PC with VPN connection.) I consistently get an error saying Windows cannot find the ip address of the samba server. I have looked at the samba logs in varlogssamba and found a complete list of connection attempts listed by ip address. These addresses match the pool addresses that are being assigned by the firewall when someone tries to connect using the vpn.
Each entry has this:
lib/access.c:check_access(327)
connection denied from (ip address that is assigned by firewall)
smdb/process.crocess_smb(1062)
connection denied from (ip address that is assigned by firewall)
I checked the smb.conf to make sure the subnet the pool addreses is listed in the global section. It is.

I have an Intel server, which has it's two SATA HDD's in "Intel Embedded Server RAID Technology 5.4" RAID1 volume. How to proceed with a system image in case two of those SATA HDD's fail at the same time? Should one take the first HDD of RAID1 volume, connect it to another machine and execute:
Code:
# ddrescue /dev/sda1 /media/External/image_of_first_hdd /media/External/log_of_first_hdd
* HDD from the problematic RAID1 volume would be recognised as /dev/sda1 behind new machine
* /media/External/ is a mount point for large external HDD in the new machine
* log_of_first_hdd would be the log file
..and then take the second HDD to another machine and execute:
Code:
# ddrescue /dev/sda1 /media/External/image_of_second_hdd /media/External/log_of_second_hdd
how to make system image using ddrescue in case disks are in "Intel Embedded Server RAID Technology 5.4" RAID1?

I have a Dell PowerEdge 300 SC that won't boot to the Fedora ISO image burned to the CD. I unpacked the .iso and the CD has the boot, isolinux and LiveOS folders visible. In the BIOS, I put the CD driver ahead of the hard drive in the boot sequence. It just doesn't see it. Is my hardware simply obsolete?

I know little if anything about svn, so need your assistance. I have a linux server running svn. I have a Windows server running svn. First, I'm looking for a way to copy an svn repository from the linux server to a new Windows server repository. I've looked for how to do this on the Internet and within the Apache.org website(which is now the maintainer of SVN).
I haven't found anything on a very granuler way to copy a repository from one O/S to another other than folks say it can be done. Not how.
Second, is there a way to automatically do this on a regular basis? I see the manual process of svnadmin dump and svnload. Also there is a manual process of svnadmin hotcopy.

My requirement is to install Ubuntu SERVER 8.04.3 LTS on a Dell 2550 machine.
Problem.
- Bug in ubuntu (desktop and server) stopping CD install on this hardware platform. It hangs half way through and is something to do with the SCSI CD drive. Lots of stuff on the net about it, but no fix as far as I can see, at least nothing that works for me.
- So, tried boot off CD and then used F6 and added a cdrom-detect/try-usb=true line together with putting a USB with the ISO burnt onto it in the USB port. Still hangs during install (can't see USB perhaps? USB not correctly burnt? Tried many many times though, and eventually gave up at 2am)
- Next tried PXE boot. Now getting somewhere. Ok I installed tftpd32 on my windows machine, and copied the netboot files from the ubuntu site to the tftpd directory. (I dont think this will help me install the server, just the desktop??) Anyway, it booted from the win tftp machine (wahey!), and went through install, BUT when it tried to find the mirror site it couldnt. In fact it couldnt find ANY mirror site. (Internet access from windows and all other PCs on the network is working fine).
So, to ensure I am installing the SERVER version, and to use PXE boot, and to NOT use the internet to download the files (i.e. load them up locally somewhere), what do I do?

I just converted our whole office from many flavors of Windows, and windows server 2000 to Ubuntu Server and Kubuntu for desktops. All went beautifully and the staff is warming up to my move(the first think one noticed was that Open Office can ready both older DOC and newer DOCX Word files, which MS Office can't do). The Ubuntu 10.04 Server was a learning experience because I added a lot of things other than just service Samba files(intranet, internal mail server, MySql, etc). Going on 3 weeks and not one problem with printing, incompatible document formats etc! But getting it all working was fun because things make sense and are visible. Windows is fine when things work but when it doesn't it is very mysterious and unfriendly. All was fine except when I tried to install Kubuntu 10.04 on a spare laptop.
It worked perfectly with the live CD and even a bootable persistent version on a flash drive. But when installing a normal HD install, all went well but I can't find the workgroup on the network. I am a pretty much novice so really do not know where to start looking. I can ping the server and internet and the new intranet work on the wireless and wired connections. Just can't see the network workgroup. Where to start looking? or maybe just reformat and start again. I just tried booting from the CD and the USB Flash drive again and both of those work well, just slow. For those wondering if it is a good move, consider what a support relievf it would be to have all your desk machines on the exact same page in terms of security updates and versions, and so easy to keep current. Besides the UI is really pretty cool.

I downloaded Fedora-12-x86_64-DVD.iso and placed it on a 16GB USB drive using the Windows LiveUSB creator which had downloaded when I first download Fedora 11.The USB boots fine and I choose the language and the the keyboard layout. I tell it the image is on the USB drive it displays /images/install.img as the image.
However after going through all the steps up to choosing where I want it throws an error saying cannot find image #1 on the hard disk. Now if I boot again and instead of choosing the USB drive I hit F2 and then choose the USB drive then /Images then the install.img and press O.K. it says it isn't and just cycles around the choose drive/image.

I am ClearCase Admin, new to Linux administration and our development environment is in linux servers. I have found that our development server which is RHEL 3 (also ClearCase client) hangs when user gives find command. After some time of execution of the find command the server hangs. We have to hard-boot the server. Is this the normal behaviour of the Servers? This server which I am talking about is highly used.Sometimes 120 or more terminals will be opened and few compilation will be happening in the server. And same single user some times opens multiple terminals and works simulataneously. We have been monitoring the server and found out that during the workdays CPU usage % goes very high.

I have installed Debian maybe 30 times over the years since about 2003, stable, testing and Sid on two different desktops and two different laptops. The only problem I have ever had is sometimes with a flaky daily build. It is one of my favorite distros.
BUT, I am totally frustrated is trying to install to a USB. I have followed the manual step by step about 6 times in the past two weeks. The result is always the same. The installation fails to find an installation iso image. Yes, I know the iso image and the hd-media vmlinuz and initrd.gz files are supposed to be the same version.
File: debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso from: [url]
Files: vmlinuz and initrd.gz from: [url]
The USB boots to a Language selection screen and proceeds through the Keyboard selection screen with no problems.
The next step which searches for an installation iso image fails.
Skipping that step and trying to load installer components from iso image also fails.
Searching the entire PC for an installation iso image also fails. (I even copied the netinst iso image to the HD root directory.)

I am currently running Fedora 10 XFCE on an Acer Aspire 1 (1.6ghz atom, 1.5gb ram, 8gb ssd). I am trying to install Fedora-11-i686-Live-XFCE via USB stick (Kingston 4gb) and am having no luck. I downloaded the .iso via bittorrent. If I use liveusb-creator: .iso passes checksum, installs boot image, installs syslinux, claims it's complete. When I try to boot, or simulate booting with qemu, I get the message "Could not find kernel image: linux" If I use
Code:
# livecd-iso-to-disk /home/jorge/downloads/Fedora-11-i686-Live-XFCE/Fedora-11-i686-Live-XFCE.iso /dev/sdb1
it says that the .iso passes checksum, installs live image, updates boot config file, and setup USB stick as a live image. Once again though, when I try to boot, or simulate booting with qemu, I get the same message "Could not find kernel image: linux"
