I have a lv image = /dev/vg0/server01. I create a partition using fdisk /dev/vg0/server01. Now, i have a partition under lv image = /dev/vg0/server01p1. how do i format /dev/vg0/server01p1 to ext3, it seems that the system doesn't recognize the partition under /dev. the purpose of this is to fully restore filesystem on domU (xen).

I recently installed Linux to run a few Linux based tools on a disk images I have, and I can't seem to copy the disk image over to my ext3 partition.
The particular distibution I'm using is BackTrack 4 r2, which is Ubuntu based. I can't seem to find specifically which version of Ubuntu is being used. The disk image is 108GB. It is currently located on a NTFS partition on a SATA hard drive connected directly to the computer. The ext3 partition is located on a second SATA hard drive connected to the same computer. It has 200GB total. I do not remember exactly how much free space it had but "df -h" showed a lot more than 108GB. The computer has 4GB of RAM and I gave it 8GB of swap space.
At this point it has been running for more than 12 hours. This is far longer than I would expect it to take had I been copying the file under Windows. How ever I do not have much experience with Linux, so if it's supose to take this long please let me know. I am planning on letting it run until I wake up tomorrow.
"cp -v" hasn't been very verbose at all. The only sign I have that indicates the computer is still trying to do something is the HDD light on my chasis that has stayed lit this whole time.
I currently run Windows Server 2008 at my office, but I'm looking to test Samba as a PDC for future reference/consulting work. Before I go and try to configure Samba, I wanted to ask if anyone can think of pitfalls I would run into and perhaps recommend a better setup:

I'm guessing vmware would work in this regard, but I'm not fond of using purposely crippled software.

I was running ubuntu as a live cd and I wanted to format my pen drive into an ext3 filesystem. I put in sudo mkfs /dev/sda1, but know im thinking that sda1 was my HDD!! I removed the cd from my computer, and it wont boot up into windows anymore!The only thing that is giving me hope is that the mkfs took about 1 min to format whatever it was formatting (my pen drive or my hdd!!) and my hdd is 500gb big. Is there anyway that I could have accidentaly formatted my HDD?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to format an USB disk with ext3. If I do this with gparted, it will be formatted, but I cannot write to it. Reading is no problen, at least it shows the lost+found folder. I guess its a problem with access rights. It would be sufficient if user "papa" would have access on one ubuntu karmic machine. But I cannot solve this graphically. The purpose of the operation is to be able to copy my /home directory onto the USB disk as a backup, before I upgrade to the current version of Ubuntu. FAT32 is no option as some files are too long.

I just did a 200 gig backup (so i am safe) and i want to join 2 (ext3) partition together, sdb1 (data4) and sdb5 (data5) into one big partition. Is there a way to do it without scraping the data in sdb5 (data5). It would save me from rewriting the data back to that new partition (200 gig is time consuming).

I have to get a complete backup (partitions, MBR, all data files) of my server without bringing it down to do it. I want to have a backup that, in the event of a system failure of any sort, I can quickly restore onto a new, bare hard disk and have the system back up and running. But gparted offers only Logical Partition for that partition. How do I convert that partition to a Primary or Extended partition - and which do I want?
I have a 160Gig and a 40 Gig drive.I would like to install the system on the 160 Gig, and use the 40 Gig drive as a storage for backups or whatever.It appears in the installation process that I am required to use a mount point, which would then turn the drive over to the root system, which would not allow it to be totally available to me.I just want to format it to ext3 filing system.Coffeecat, if you are out there and see this, strange things are happening to the 40 Gig drive - it says it is using 2 gig, but it is totally empty of all system files, hidden files, trash, etc. and it is being imaged in the media folder in root. ~50gig Windows 7 - NTFS
~100gig Ubuntu - EXT3
~100gig Snow Leopard - HFS+
~100gig Extended Partition
-- ~100gig Swap Disk - exFat
I wanted to delete the Snow Leopard partition and format the Swap Disk partition to something else. exFat was causing major file size bloat on small files. QT sdk bloated to like 11 gigs or something ridiculous like that. Anyways, I loaded up an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS live cd and gparted then deleted the Snow Leopard partition. Gparted said "Mission Accomplished" and tried to rescan the drive, but never found it. At this point I restarted the computer, a dell laptop, which didn't boot with an unable to find a bootable device error. The ubuntu live cd doesn't see the drive anymore. gparted scans for drives indefinitely and fdisk -l has no output.
i have instaled ubuntu 11.04 wubi on my pc with windows 7. i installed and everything was going ok i navigate on ubuntu already. but the problems star here i went on my ubuntu to the partition section and i format my windows partion to be the home partion and changed the nfts to ext, i did the upgrades but i forgot that theyr running yet and i restart my computer when it boot again it gaves me an error:

and the windows7 says that i have to instal again. so i went to another pc and i made a cd boot and a pen boot. i burned the iso (downloaded from the ubuntu oficial site the 11.04 32 bit version) image to the cd and pen drive prperly, i adjust my boot options to star from usb or cd rom and nothing im struck.
So I tried adding a new, 2nd hard drive to my Ubuntu 9.04 desktop for some additional storage and only managed to kill my system so that it won't boot up anymore (I just get a blinking cursor after the BIOS does its thing).I could sure use a little help getting back to a functioning system, and then adding the second drive. I tried following the instructions from this link to add the 2nd drive:

I currently run a dual boot with Windows Vista and Ubuntu Lucid. I have been using Ubuntu for quite a while now, but kept around Windows "just in case." I have decided that keeping Windows is unnecessary and my Ubuntu partition is running out of space. I was wondering how I could format the Windows partition and add that space to the Ubuntu partition without having to format my entire computer.

Goal: Create a bootable USB drive that contains multiple DVD Isos. Upon boot, a menu is displayed that allows the choice of several OS installs.
Problem: I just can't figure out how to format syslinux.cfg to load my specified iso image. Here is semi sudo code for what I want to do with my config:
sudo syslinux config
label <any label>
menu label install SLES 10 x86
kernel linux
append <path_to_iso=/sles10/dvd1_x86.iso> autoyast=10x86.xml

Googling tells you quite a bit about syslinux.cfg, but it doesn't reallyt tell you how to load specific file for installation.
Ive been trying to PXE boot a XEN kernel image in gzip format, and I was getting Invalid or corrupt kernel format error. Ive seen that other kernel images having a file type of Linux kernel x86 boot executable RO-rootFS are bootable. (both are bootable using grub anyhow).
Is there any way to convert the b/n the formats, or any other solution?
I was booting a Virtualbox instance, again I guess that shouldn't matter because pxelinux loads from tftp properly, but it doesn't even proceed to load the kernel. I think the issue here is with the image format itself rather than what it contains, or where it runs.
I am using GNUPLOT for plotting graphs but don't know how to save the graph as an image (irrespective of the format). If someone knows the correct GNUPLOT command for this, please tell me. Note that I have read: [url]but it does not satisfy.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just made a new storage partition and formatted it as Ext3. Now, this particular partition is shown and can be read at the terminal "fdisk -l". However, unlike in my Mint 7 partition, it does not show in my Fedora 10.

This partition can also shows be seen in gparted in Fedora. However, even in the "Places" tab, it does not show.
I have an 80 GB XFS / partition which is dying. Got some errors like this:

It's not a problem to create another partition, I've got 2 500GB and 2 1TB disks, all EXT3. I've also 2 80 GB disks, 1 for / and 1 for /home. I will remove the 2 80 GB disks but I have a lot of stuff compiled myself. I use openSUSE 11.1. Is it possible to create a 80 GB EXT3 partition on each of the 500 GB hdd, 1 for / and 1 for /home and move the data to it? must it be done with the DD command or can I easily copy everything within a live-cd. The /boot and swap are already on one of the 500GB disks, and there is no bootrecord on the 80 GB disks.

[URL] It's a straithfoward proces so I dont understand what I did wrong. I'm using fresh xp install with (more or less) all the updates and ubuntu 10.04 Also the partition is mounted at /home, so I dont know if that makes any difference.
