My server name is "ubuntu", if I try \ubuntushare in XP it says "Windows cannot find ' \ubuntushare'....." All I want is a very simple setup to share my www folder over my private network, really not worried about security as there's only me on it!
Does anyone have a link to a tutorial on how to set up a DHCP server and SAMBA as a windows domain controller? I can't really find good detailed guides by searching google.

We are running samba on a Fedora release 8 (werewolf). The samba server is located on a dmz subnet off of my Cisco ASA 5510 firewall. From my inside network I have no problems connecting to the samba shares. However when someone uses a VPN connection they cannot connect to the samba share. VPN users are assigned an address from a pool which has no problems getting to the dmz based samba server. All ports required are open on both firewalls (Samba server and PC with VPN connection.) I consistently get an error saying Windows cannot find the ip address of the samba server. I have looked at the samba logs in varlogssamba and found a complete list of connection attempts listed by ip address. These addresses match the pool addresses that are being assigned by the firewall when someone tries to connect using the vpn.
Each entry has this:
lib/access.c:check_access(327)
connection denied from (ip address that is assigned by firewall)
smdb/process.crocess_smb(1062)
connection denied from (ip address that is assigned by firewall)
I checked the smb.conf to make sure the subnet the pool addreses is listed in the global section. It is.
I installed the latest version...Everything works like a charm. I have Windows Home Server 2003 running and would like to access all of my folders. How can i setup OPENSUSE to find/access my Windows Home Server 2003. Can you help me with this. Just to let you know. Am i missing something so i can access them locally.

I swear Samba ends up working but maybe the problem is with Windows 7. I looked at the SAMBAWiki Win 7 page and made sure my registry values were what they should have been (and they were).

View 4 Replies View Relatedi set up samba and im trying to acces from windows xp. i can see the drive if i go to run and type the ip adress but when i click on the share i get an error that says "sharename" in this case "sam is not accessible" you might not have permission under this network resource. so how do i give myself permissions. I have followed several tutorials tried different types of set up , restart of samba and what not. but still nothing. I should mentioned that i have been at this for 3 days now and still cant get it to work. i have red hat linux 5.1 and window xp proffesional.

I am trying to set up a windows file server using fedora 14 with samba. when I go to the a windows machine I can log in the the samba server. When I try to go to the folder I need access to I get and error saying "you might not have permission to use this network resource" I am trying to access my home directory. Directory /home/mike, username mike. As far as I can tell it is not a permission of the directory. I have a user set up in samba that uses the mike user account.

The first is a Read-Only share for windows users that doesn't require a password. This i've managed to do so far.
The second is a Password protected Upload share. So far I am able to have both shares (which access the same directory) but am unable to log in to the pass word protected share.
I know i'm not doing things quite right, and would like a little bit of help

I am trying to connect to a Windows 7 PC through Samba, and while samba can find the Windows 7 PC, it cannot access it, asking for a username and password instead. However, I can access the another Windows XP share perfectly fine.

I have setup samba for 2 shares, will list below shares. 1 which requires a login and 1 temp folder which I would like guest access to. Currently I have security = user which works great for the data folder which requires a login. If I try to access temp I get asked for a user name and password as well. I tried to set security = share which then allowed access to temp with out a login but also allowed access to the data folder. From the data folder I emoved public = yes. I then get asked for a user name and password like I should but the system will not accept it. This is a Centos 5.5 server with a mail server on it.

The domain name is WORKGROUP I checked everything: firewall Opensuse (open ports), firewall XP (disabled), XP workgroup name (WORKGROUP), opensuse Samba workgroup name (WORKGROUP) And my domain controller is set to "Not a DC" Still when I launch network in Dolphin I get "Unable to find any workgroups in your local network"

I tried to have him ping my ip and that wouldn't even work. I'm confused and wondering why it doesn't work. We share a lot of files and this would make both of our lives much easier.

I'm trying to setup a Samba network share with a Fedora Directory Server backend. This will be used primarily for Windows users to authenticate before accessing the share. I am using Fedora Core 10 and have all of the latest updates installed. When I try to connect from a Windows machine, I am prompted for a username and password. I enter the username and password of the account I created in Fedora Directory Server in OU=People. The credentials are rejected. At the same time in the log file I see this:

Administrator is the user I created in Fedora Directory Server. If I perform an ldapsearch it will find the user as uid: Administrator so I know it is able to be looked up in FDS. But I'm guessing that's not the problem.

Trying to setup a Kerberos + OpenLDAP server to manage users for our Samba shares (was going to use just OpenLDAP, but apparently it is less secure than using Kerberos with it). (Distro: CentOS 5.5) Haven't even gotten to the point of connecting either to Samba yet. I have set up a Kerberos server, and configured it as necessary. I am happy that it is working as intended, as I can login and manage principals from both the local terminal and remotely on other clients.
I have setup a server (sv1.myhost.net), and configured it to talk to Kerberos (auth.myhost.net). I have created both a [URL] principal, and a testuser principal. I have set the password on the testuser but not on the host/sv1.myhost.net. I have added the keys for both users to the keytab file on the sv1.myhost.net. I am at a Windows 7 machine (on the same internal network), and have installed the Network Identity Manager. It is able to request a ticket successfully for the testuser account.
When I use putty w/GSSAPI (0.58) to remote login to the system, it says using 'testuser' and then just hangs there. Eventually putty connection times out. The fact that both machines can connect to the auth server to communicate with kerberos correctly suggests firewalls are correct. The relevant entries in sshd_config have been uncommented to tell srv1 to use Kerberos authentication.

Now try login to karmic's or (other linux box) jaunty, can't find network path. tried turning off the firewalls, still no go. the two linux boxes can chat merrily, and the 2 windows boxes can chat, but to each other. however after fidling a bit , on karmic i now get

I want to setup a Linux File Server for a small windows network (around 50 users). I do know that I am gona need Smb service/pkg for that. I haven't used Samba for a while now and as per the best of my knowledge, entire communication (including usernames and passwords) between a samba server & windows client machines will be plain text. Is there any way to secure all this communication??
Secondly, if i remember correctly, MS windows wont let me mount more than one samba shares as network disk when all my shares can be accessed by different smb users with different passwords?? is there a solution to this problem? OR may be if there is any other package available for this purpose so that i wont have to use samba?

I'd like to use bittorrent for legitimate purposes (mainly linux distro based) but the powers that be have blocked access to bittorrent at my university. I have an ubuntu VPS that I use for odds and ends and was thinking that I could setup a SOCKS5 server on it. That way, I can input the SOCKS5 info directly into the proxy section of my local bittorrent application (Transmission 1.92 running on snow leopard) and be good to go. The problem, however, is that I cannot find a way to get a SOCKS server up and running on my VPS. I've heard that ssh can be used as a simple SOCKS server, but I've also heard that i may need to install a more complete SOCKS server such as dante. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
