General :: Way To Limit CPU Usage For Some Process?

Sep 21, 2009

I'm writing a shell script which aims to create a safe gtared (xxx.sql.gz) copy of MySQL databases. This script is planned to be Cron-Jobed.

Well, what I need to add to this shell, is something that limit CPU usage for the whole process (just in case if the database being generating is a huge one.)So, after few time of googling I found couple of solutions:

- Using cpulimit.
I tried to place the code in Position(1) and Position(2) but it didn't seem to be working fine.. Any idea about the right use?

And the other Solution is:- Using nice.

Well, assuming I named my shell script (sqlbacker)..

Finally, this is my first time I ever write a shell, so correct me if somewhere I made a mistake :-)
(The script itself works perfectly)

General :: Need To Limit CPU Usage Of Process

Jan 26, 2010

There's a disfunctional process eating copious cpu time.Is there a way to effectively assign it a high nice value? I need to do this whenever it runs, for whatever reason, and I can't be bothered to track down all the scripts and scenarios that cause it to run and change the script to use nice. And I can't be bothered to manually run renice whenever I notice that it's running.

I want the OS to automatically assign a high nice value to this process, perhaps based on the processes name. Is this possible?Presumably, a cron job could run every 5 minutes and run "renice" on every process matching a given name, but I'm hoping for a solution with more finess.

CentOS 5 Server :: Super Slow Windows Printer Properties Dialogue With Samba Printer

Sep 18, 2009

I have a Centos 5.3 server with Samba file shares and a shared Samba printer. I am not running a domain.

I recently changed my windows desktop pc from an XP machine to a vista 64 machine... It has a different user name. Everything went pretty smoothly - and the and the vista machine found the smba printer - and even downloaded the driver from the samba server. he printer works OK - and the file shares are fine.

The only thing which is quite odd - is that the Printer Properties dialogue takes more than 30 seconds to come up - and every action you attempt with the dialogue takes a similar amount of time.

I will include below the essence of my smb.conf:

Server :: Limit Print Job Size From Samba?

Mar 15, 2010

Does anyone know of a way of limiting a print-job size from samba?

I know how to limit a print job size form cups, and how to require x amount of free space before accepting a job. I've even dug up how to require x amount of free space for samba to accept a print job, but I can't see how to limit samba to only certain sized jobs.

Someone tried to print a >1G file to my print-server this morning, causing me to have a less relaxed Monday than I had hoped. Because it ran out of space before spooling, it was never limited by cups. Because I had to get rid of it ASAP so people could get work done, I have no idea who's it was, or where it came from. Scouring logs didn't give me any good leads either.

CentOS 5 Server :: Setting Quota Limit In Samba 'homes' Share?

May 20, 2010

I'm trying to set up quota limit in samba-3.0.33-3.15.el5_4.1 in CentOS 5.5, by means of the module vfs objects. In the samba howto [1] I found a very brief explanation, but it isn't working for me. The basic idea is to setup a user called 'quota2g' (uid 499) and setup the [homes] share, as it comes by default, to enforce the quota on each user share.quota2g:x:499:499:User quota 2GB:/home/quota2g:/bin/bash

Ubuntu :: Limit CPU To 75% Of Usage

Apr 1, 2011

Everytime CPU reaches around 85% of maximum it shuts down due to overheating. What I want to do is be able to throttle the cpu to 75% so it never goes above that. I don't want to just throttle individual programs which I think is what CPULimit does right? The fans are failing but I can't afford to get fixed. I just want to use it for email and web browsing usually.

I have cleaned dust out, use in a well ventilated room, use a cooling stand etc but still when CPU gets to approx 85% then whala it shuts itself down. Have been using with XP but just switched to Ubuntu and have only had it shut down once so far.

For example: Pretend my desktop has 4 different user accounts. Currently each user account could run "su" for root access if the person sitting in front of the screen knows the password.

1) Could I somehow make only 1 of the 4 user accounts able to "su" into root mode?

Server :: Unable To Add Samba 3.5.5 Shared Printer To Windows

Sep 30, 2010

I am sitting with a slight problem sharing some HP network printers (JetDirect) with my windows machines. I have cups 1.4.4 configured on my Debian PDC with samba 3.5.5. The printers in question, is configured in cups and is working perfectly, but for some reason when I try to add the printers from Win7 or Win Vista I get the following error:

"Connect to Printer Windows cannot connect to the printer Operation failed with error 0x00000006"

I had a look around and it seems that the above error code is tied in with incorrect drivers, but the strange thing is that if I create a new local port on the win machines and specify the shared printers they work. The problem then is that cups does not identify the jobs correctly. The job will be named something like "smbprn.00000264 Remote Downlevel Document" instead of the actual document name. One of the reasons for using cups is to be able to monitor printer usage so this option is a temporary solution in my mind. Can the print$ share be causing it although it is empty and no drivers has been uploaded? Neither the samba nor cups logs give me something concrete to work with (hopefully someone else can spot the problem).

Extract from samba log:

Server :: Samba Shared Printer Prints Garbage

Jul 28, 2009

Just recently got a few printers connected to the network at my shop and I've managed to get them connected in with samba for the linux clients. Whenever I try to print from one of the clients, the printer will click on and whiz away, but only prints on the first page stuff that looks like this:

Code:
%!PS-Adobe-3.0
%%BoundingBox: 38 24 574 768
%%Title: Enscript Outpu
%%For: User N

It seems to me that the printer isn't processing the postscript data properly (or I'm just not sending it in the right format) but I'm at a loss as to how to go about fixing it.

CentOS 5 Server :: How To Configure Samba (Shared Printer)

Aug 20, 2009

How to configure samba, cups, whatever else is necessary to turn centOS into a print server that provides the print driver to any client adding a printer shared from the server? For example, I have a Xerox Phaser 6125n and I was able to configure my server to share the printer for clients on the network, but I still have to have the driver available on each client that uses the printer. I want to be able to put the driver on the server and provide it automatically to any client who installs the printer.

Also, this is not as important but rather just an annoyance, I am having an issue with samba that I can't figure out. I have user shares set up on the server but the first time any user accesses their personal share they need to provide their password. How can I set up user mapping between linux and windows accounts so that authentication is automatic? I've done this in the past with Fedora Core 2, but that was a long time ago and the same doesn't work on centOS.

CentOS 5 :: Control Groups To Limit The Memory Usage?

Aug 13, 2011

I was looking into using control groups to limit the memory usage of each user on my CentOS system. I was told that this required me to recompile the kernel to have cgroup support. Is this true? Or is there a kernel module that will allow cgroups to work for users and groups on the system without kernel re-compile? Or, is there another way to limit the users memory usage? I have tried ulimit and it doesn't seem to work right.

I ask since this setup will be on a VPS system, that means to re-compile the kernel I need to use Xen instead of OpenVZ. Plus I have never in my life re-compiled the kernel, least of all with different modules ha ha ha so I would have to pay my NOC to do it. So if I don't HAVE to recompile the kernel to get cgroup support.

Ubuntu :: Connect To Samba Printer And File Server With Lubuntu?

Mar 9, 2011

My university provides instructions for connecting to their printers and network shares in Ubuntu. They work pretty smooth, but I've run into a couple of problems when trying to follow these instructions in Lubuntu:

1. Windows Printer via Samba printer is missing under Add-->Network Printer in the printer utility (system-config-printer 1.2.3, same one as in standard Ubuntu) I'm guessing I need to install some samba related packages that standard Ubuntu includes by default, but which ones?

2. To access network disks in standard Ubuntu, for example your pesonal space, you select Go-->Location in Nautilus and enter an address of the format smb://something.university.domain/resource. How can I access such locations with PCManFM?

Security :: Limit Incoming HTTP Bandwidth Usage With IPtables

We have for example servers that have a FTP and HTTP server running and whenever HTTP has a lot of connections open, the other uploads/downloads get a timeout. Server :: Limit The Suphp User Memory Limit?

May 12, 2010

I have a VPS server with 512 MB memory. The php.ini is set so script memory limit = 16 MB. However, I have noticed in my top report, instances like the following:

Quote:

5484 coldclim 25 0 46476 32m 5920 R 0.0 6.4 0:00.93 php

The bold number of 6.4 is the % of sever memory this process is using. 6.4 % of 512 MB of memory is about 32 MB of memory, so it appears that this isn't being limited by php.ini. Am I correct? This leads to the next question: Is there some way to limit the amount of memory a single suphp process can use? (Basically, something like the setting in php.ini which limits suphp processes in the same way.)

General :: Print To Samba Printer Using Ghostscript?

Feb 15, 2010

I'm trying to get GS to print to network Windows printer, but somehow fail to do so . I managed to print through CUPS to that printer but if I use GS with -sDEVICE=cups nothing happens, nothing is printed, CUPS logs remain unchanged... I also found command using smbclient (gs ... | smbclient //machine/printer -U user ... -c 'printmode graphics;print-') but that one fails with "session setup failed: NT_STATUS_REQUEST_NOT_ACCEPTED" Here is why I need it, so maybe you know better way: We need to print thousands of PDF files in one print job (to prevent anybody else to send something else in while we are printing this). I was trying to develop small C program using GS API to achieve this but somehow I fail on something as trivial as print something on shared network printer.
