View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been working through setting up a CUPS server on my Dell Dimension 2000 which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have the server set up and the printer added and have gone through all of the steps the tutorials suggest to get the printer to be viewed on the network (set it to shared, allow other machines to view shared printers, etc). However, I can't find this printer on any of the other machine on my LAN (one machine running mac os x the other running Ubuntu 10.10).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been able (with some hair pulling and gnashing of teeth) to print from outside the LAN to the printer connected via USB to the desktop computer at home, until the last upgrade. The laptop will forst say the printer may not be connected, but eventually (usually) after a while says the job was sent to the printer. The log files on the desktop - serving as the printer server have an error message in cups/error_log that I am not familiar with, and don't believe I have seen before. I am sure if I could decipher that error and figure out how to change the behavior to get rid of it, it would once again work. Printing from within the LAN is a no-brainer as it has been for the last several releases. The error that I get when trying to print outside the LAN (via the internet) is:
cupsdAcceptClient: 12 from <WAN IP>:631 (IPv4) Unable to encrypt connection from <WAN IP> - GnuTLS internal error. I am missing something as far as authentication from the laptop to the desktop. how to fix it.
Running Debian 5, fairly new install. I have CUPS 1.38 installed. After much work, I got a PPD file for a Dell printer working - albeit not the exact one I need (5330dn), but close enough to work (3100cn). Question: when I look at the list of printers in CUPS, I see a bunch of extra printers that are on the network, but that I didn't add. How do I remove them (ie. I don't want them to be listed)?Going to Administration | Manage Printers shows me a black button named "Delete Printer", but clicking on it gives me an error message of:
Ok, while I'm here, I'll ask 2 other simpler questions:
(2) anyone have the .ppd file for the Dell M5330dn printer? I've spent 90 minutes on the phone w/ the Dell tech support, and those guys are clueless....
(3) I have 4 printers of the same model. the first is working - is there an easy (command line) way of adding the other printers? Ie. can I just copy the /etc/cups/ppd file 3 times, renaming it to my other printer names (and ip addresses)?
I've been at this mess pardon my french for a few hours and i'm still going nowhere, original thread posted over at archlinux forums:Since my printer isn't visible on my server (works just fine on my client) I tried to manually add various URI (tried em all) and I went from "printer location not found, waiting for jobs, to printer isnt running".
In my opinion it should be working but it's not, i've read the linux printer database/various linux forums/#cups on freenode (idled for 2 days no response)/gentoo wiki/forums and the old tool "google" but most of the "hacks" I tried didn't work. There's a lot of google links with issues similars to my own and alas they are all unresolved, is this a typical problem with unix/CUPS over servers/network?Why is it so difficult for CUPS to detect my printer over my server?
Is it possible to use CUPs to share an already networked printer using IPP? The printer itself uses IPP.I know at first look this may seem like a silly thing to do, however I have a special case to set up a "print proxy server" due to security compliance reasons
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am probably going to get blasted for this statement which is a result of four days of frustration. There are many people on here who are having problems getting their printers to work with Ubuntu. In my case it is version 10:04. I have been reading and trying fixes for four days. Nothing works.Surely this has got to the attention of the people who know what they are doing and design these programs. I sure don't know how to fix this, along with a lot of other users. We are not being lazy or arrogant. Nothing seems to work.Surely someone in the hierarchy can put in a patch that fixes this problem. The fact that Ubuntu won't print for so many people surely must be a priority inhe development of this software. So, please will one of the program developers fix this problem and send out a patch.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a client.conf in /etc/cups that points to a CUPS server. I don't have u/p access to this server. I also want to print to a local printer (USB), but I can't set it up - ALL attempts bring me back to the CUPS server password prompt. Is there some line I can add to the client.conf to allow me to use a local printer?

Any ideas? I have installed the RPMs from Brother's web site for both LPR and CUPS-wrapper
I wish to update the drivers for a printer which is being shared using samba - can I just upload the new drivers and overwrite the old or do I need to delete the old drivers before uploading the new ones
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Brother DCP585CW and have installed the drivers from Brother and it worked fine on Ubuntu 9.10 on both my desktop and laptop. I have installed 10.04 on both and now the problem. It works fine on the desktop but I get a problem on the laptop. It is a wireless printer and I can print to it but only after I do 2 things each time I reboot the laptop. I have to configure it through cups (http://localhost:631) because it keeps getting set to being connected via USB and letter rather than A4 paper on each boot but the correct setting is:
Code:
Description:DCP585CW Location:Landing Driver:Brother DCP-585CW CUPS v1.1 (color)
Connection:lpd://192.168.1.66/binary_p1 Defaults:job-sheets=none, none media=adobe_A4_8.125x11.5139in
I also have to correct it via System/Administration/Printing and setting A4 and setting it to the default.
I have a Fedora 11 box with an HP Laserjet 1000 (connected by USB) a Windows XP machineBoth are on the same network. I am desperately trying to share the printer to the Windows XP box using IPP. The Windows XP machine recognizes the printer queue, configures correctly and then ... nothing. It simply does not print ! Printer sharing worked perfectly in Fedora 10, with CUPS 1.3, but something seems to have broken.I used the guide available at this adress and tried all mentionned possibilites

we are having new printers. At the moment we over 1000 machines on multiple sites but no print server they are manually added on the machine ( I know don't ask).
Anyway there is no way they would let use a windows server so the only option I have is to use linux however I little unsure if it is capable of doing the job I need it to do. Basically I want to add the printers on the linux server either using samba or ipp (I would assume samba would be best).
The reason i want to do this is when we have to do around the machines I just want to go around the machines and just the map the printer and it brings down the driver and config etc as we want them to duplex. The issue is I been trying to gain information on the internet and getting conflicting information apparently I can add the windows driver onto the server so when I map the printer it brings it down. However some guides state you still have through the whole process of adding the printer and then choosing the driver etc. Which kinda of makes it pointless to do the printer server since I would already have to do this anyway if we don't have one.
I just want to go be able to go around the machines and for example click star run and do something like \192.168.1.1printer01 and then it done kind of thing.
My setup is like this: i have a small office network and i bought yesterday a new multifunctional printer Samsung SCX-4521F. It is shared with samba and connected to the server with USB. In the network everyhing works well, users can log on to the domain, print from windows to the new shared Samsung printer and i even managed to enable network scannin. But when i try to print from MS DOS i wont get a single page. We have an accounting program in dos. All the other computers are XP Pro SP3. My server is running for 2 weeks the newest CentOS with all updates. I'v maped the network printer in windows witht the command "net use LPT1 \ServerSCX-4521F. I get a message that maping was completed succesfully. If i start a print job nothing happens. "Printing" or "warming up" flashes several times on the printer and thats it.
CUPS error log:

I noticed that a bit after I had updated Ubuntu 10.04 through the Update Manager, I couldn't print at all! (I run ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop and have a networked HP Officejet 6110xi all-in-one printer connected to a comp running Windows XP home on the same LAN). Everything works when I boot up in windows vista, so the problem is definitely in Ubuntu.
First, I checked the printer jobs and it said that there was an error with a filter or something. Restarting the job didn't do squat, so I decided to try reinstalling my printer, but get the same CUPS error "error-client-not-possible" right after I click "Apply". I then Googled the issue but didn't find much of anything, so I thought I'd try reinstalling CUPS. No luck there either... Same error again and again.
I have installed Canon ImageRunner 2018i on my linux box using CUPS web interface. When I try to install this as a network printer from a Windows XP machine, the windows XP machine keeps asking me for a device driver. Is there a way to configure the printer on CUPS/Samba so that when I try to install it on Windows XP machine as a network printer, it does not ask me for a device driver?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup a small network between my old and new laptops to transfer my personal data. They are now linked with a crossover cable and they see each other. The old one has a dual-boot setup with WinXp and Ubuntu 9.10.The new one with Win7 and Ubuntu 9.10.I tried samba but it was very slow even using Windows in both computers: maximum transfer rates were about 1,5 Mib/sec.I tried SSH using ubuntu on both pcs and it is reliable and much faster, 5 Mib/sec. But I wanted more...I installed the NFS server on the old one and exported the NTFS partition where my data resides with sync and ro options.
I installed the NFS client on the new one and i'm able to mount the remote partition. Now, when I transfer my files I get very high speed, more than 10 Mib/sec but after a while I get a "Stale NFS file handler" error but I really didn't touch any file in the old pc and the connection is always up.Searching on the web I found that NFS had some troubles exporting NTFS partitions in the past but should be fully compatible with them since the last versions of ubuntu.
Installed fedora/configued samba, shared printer and i am not able to access shared printer from any of the fedora machine. I am able to access the printer /shared folder from windows machine. I dont know the process of cups installation.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a printer configured on my Ubuntu server using CUPS amd made it available to the local network. The printer is recognized on my other Ubuntu machine without any problems.
But on my Suse laptop, the printer is not recognized. Using the YaST printer Configuations, I choose the option "Recieve Printer Information from Remote CUPS servers. But no printer is found.But... when I choose Do All Yout Printing Directly via One Remote CUPS server and enter the correct IP address (192.168.1.100), the printer is found andI am sure the printer info is broadcasted because it shows up on my second Ubuntu PC. But why is it not recognized by default on my Suse machine
I'm trying to setup a headless CUPS server, but no matter what I do, I can't add a new printer. Not using the web interface, or the GUI of another computer connected to the CUPS server.I always get to the point shown in the attached screenshot, and then I am asked for a password, which never works. I've practically slaughtered my cupsd.conf, and it now looks like this:
Code:
LogLevel info
# Allow remote access
Port 631
Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock
[code]....
it looks like the above should tell CUPS to never ever ask for authentication, but as you can see in the second screenshot, it still does!
cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message
cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
cupsd: Child exited with status 1!
The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.
My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .
I have a wire network connection to a printer over my Lan. It is an HP 3210 All-in-One series. Can someone tell me whether cups is capable of printing to this printer? Or do I need to use HP's drivers (:::shudder::?
View 8 Replies View RelatedSo I have a Zebra S4M label printer that I have managed to get mostly working under CUPS. To make that work, I have the printer upgraded with the latest firmware, CUPS 1.4.1 with its AppArmor profile disabled and the Zebra EPL/ZPL ppd file that's floating about the internet loaded into cups. The printer is connected via USB to the computer, and is set up in cups using ZPL. The computer acts as a print server for other computers, and everything seems to work ok, with one exception. When the printer runs out of paper or runs out of ink ribbon, the printer stops and displays an error on screen, but CUPS never stops. It keeps taking jobs, sends them to the printer and reports that everything is A-OK. It appears at a certain point, the printer's memory gets full and then CUPS sort of hangs.
But it still doesn't display and errors or stop the quque, it just starts this weird behavior where it eats jobs or combines them into one giant job that it just sits on. What I need is for CUPS to know that the printer is out of paper or ribbon and pause the queue until the error status is clear. I know that this printer is communicating its status in some way, as when it's connected to a windows machine, the print queue stops when the paper runs out. How to get CUPS to recognize the printer status so that I'm not losing jobs? I've tried digging through the debug logs but there doesn't seems to be much help there. I do notice that from time to time CUPS says it's discarding "unused printer status changed" and "unused job progress" events but other than that, nothing I see of interest.
My work has switched to Fuji Xerox printers, which up to today I've been able to print to simply by sending a PostScript file to their IP addresses. But as of today printing requires a login. Here are the (Windows) instructions:
"Start>Settings>Printers and Faxes>R-Click on the printer>Properties>Configuration>Accounting>Change the dropdown box Use Login Name to Enter owner name>Type in your staff ID number in the User ID box e.g. e*******>OK>Apply"
how do I apply this to CUPS? Where can I find an owner name in CUPS?
I cannot navigate my windows network because of a unresolved issue.
see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...8#post11131098
The workaround is to use the IP address of the computers.
Problem is that CUPS has the printer address with the computer name as opposed to IP addresses.
CUPS will not let me manage the network printer. It asks for a user and password. My sudo name and password dont work.
I think the solution lies in the cups.conf but I am unsure how to fix it so that I can manage the printers.
Is it possible to setup a printer without cups, most of Linuxes try to setup cups, which is basically for Notworks, but it really doesn't help much with a stand alone and more of nuisance and a hindrance.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Officejet G85 and I just upgraded my system, which included the whole printer subsystem, and lost my printing. I have tried adding it via KDE's print dialog as well as directly via CUPS (localhost:631), to no avail.
I have searched all over the web for a couple of days, and can find similar stuff, but no resolution. I think it may be new (I just upgraded most of my system) in the latest releases of cups/hplip/.etc. Also, after the upgrade my hp-toolbox quit working, telling me I don't have qt4 installed, which I do.
