I want to run a soft that is daemonized, and listens on port 6789. This soft is launched through a php page, so, by the apache user. The probl�me is that the apache user does not has rights to open / listen on a port. I tried to add apache user to the root group, but it won't help. In the application log, I have this every second :

My understanding is SELinux adds type enforcement to standard Linux. This means that both the standard Linux and enhanced SELinux access controls must be satisfied to access an object. Which means that thing that is prevented to do in the normal standard Linux will be also prevented in the SELinux System? Does SELinux make it possible to run a non-root software to bind to a port < 1024? something that standard Linux won't allow? If not, what other suggestions do you have for allowing a program to run as non-root but able to bind to privileged ports? I know all about using the port re-direction such as ipchains, iptables.

Webmin - Check, ftps-fileZilla - Check, Apache -It Works BUT I cant seam to set up Apache as a named server using Bind DSN. Tried most of the help in the fourms and ..... I think my problems is in the master server selection, do i have to use [URL]... or can i just use myservername. I have tryed both with no luck. First time with the server addition.

I have just installed Debian 6.0.1 base install, for the use of a file server. I installed samba using apt-get and am using: smbd version 3.5.6

I'm running a server with Ubuntu 10.04 installed. I recently set up a VirtualHost (I'll call it my.website.com), like I have in the past without any problems. But this time, I'm stumped. When I connect to my.website.com, it should hit port 80, right? It doesn't; rather, it hits port 8000. I don't have any rewrites/redirections (I checked wherever possible) and checked apache2.conf (httpd.conf is empty).

After doing this I load 127.0.0.1:8080 in a browser and get a 404 error generated by apache, if I change it back to 80 it works fine.

As what user do the PHP scripts run? Or is this system specific? I don't want to chmod all files to 777 so I'd just like to change file and folder ownerships to the user that is executing that script.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get Apache to run in a user's home directory. I changed the conf file so that Apache runs under the user and group "kiosk" and changed the DocumentRoot and Directory from the default to "/home/kiosk". Then I set Apache to start at boot (chkconfig --level 235 httpd on) and rebooted. When I checked, httpd is running as kiosk like it should (ps aux | grep httpd). However, when I try wget localhost, I get a 403 response back. If as root I call "httpd -k stop" and then "httpd -k start", then everything works exactly as it should (curiously, if I try using "-k restart", it still doesn't work). After this, httpd still shows as running as kiosk and if I check before calling start, it shows no httpd processes running as expected.
This only happens when I use httpd to stop and then start the web server. If I try to restart using apachectl I still get a 403 error. As an interesting aside, after I've used httpd, if I try using "apachectl restart" I get a "(13)Permission denied: Error retrieving pid file run/httpd.pid" error. This is all on a freshly installed CentOS 5.5 server. Why I'm seeing this very different behaviour from what I thought were just equivalent ways of starting Apache? And then what I could do to get it to start up and run properly on boot? One last item to mention is this isn't a permissions problem. I set the permissions to 777 to both the home and kiosk directories (and 666 to the web files) just to be sure that's not the problem.

Is is possible, via iptables or something similar, to bind a service running on a specific port to a specific interface? My case: I use a VPN service for privacy. I would like to have all traffic except ftp and ssh to run over tun0. Ports 21 and 22 will need to be accessible to the outside world (eth0) while the VPN is running.

If I open a raw SCTP socket, am I able to bind to a specific port? (I only want to see SCTP packets from a particular IP address AND port.) Or, any raw SCTP socket, regardless of port binding , will get all SCTP packets received by the OS from that IP address? The port doesn't matter and is ignored.
