Server :: Apache: Can Filter The User's Login Name
Oct 29, 2010
Where I work, the IT people have the systems setup (wrongly in my opinion) to require not just the user's username but to have the username pre-pended with regional info. Like this:Username: RegionName//UserNamePassword: ********The server I maintain doesn't require this (even though I have it authenticate through the same services as the rest of IT (active directory via ldap))The problem is I see lots of authentication errors in my apache error_log file because people are using the RegionName//UserName login

I have a nagios server monitoring around a 1000 hosts in our office. To make things easier, i've integrated apache into Active Directory for the website authentication. This works perfectly, however the Nagios website uses alot of CGI scripts to display information I get the message below when trying to show CGI scripts with an AD user. Local users work fine. 403 Forbidden You don't have permission to access /nagios/cgi-bin/status.cgi on this server. I tried adding the AD users to the cgi.conf file within Nagios (which works for local accounts) but it doesn't seem to work even with this change.

I migrated joomla to my new server and noticed that the script doesn't have the permission to edit it's own configuration file and write to the cache folder. All my files are owned by root, which I guess isn't a good idea.
As what user do the PHP scripts run? Or is this system specific? I don't want to chmod all files to 777 so I'd just like to change file and folder ownerships to the user that is executing that script.

I'm trying to get Apache to run in a user's home directory. I changed the conf file so that Apache runs under the user and group "kiosk" and changed the DocumentRoot and Directory from the default to "/home/kiosk". Then I set Apache to start at boot (chkconfig --level 235 httpd on) and rebooted. When I checked, httpd is running as kiosk like it should (ps aux | grep httpd). However, when I try wget localhost, I get a 403 response back. If as root I call "httpd -k stop" and then "httpd -k start", then everything works exactly as it should (curiously, if I try using "-k restart", it still doesn't work). After this, httpd still shows as running as kiosk and if I check before calling start, it shows no httpd processes running as expected.
This only happens when I use httpd to stop and then start the web server. If I try to restart using apachectl I still get a 403 error. As an interesting aside, after I've used httpd, if I try using "apachectl restart" I get a "(13)Permission denied: Error retrieving pid file run/httpd.pid" error. This is all on a freshly installed CentOS 5.5 server. Why I'm seeing this very different behaviour from what I thought were just equivalent ways of starting Apache? And then what I could do to get it to start up and run properly on boot? One last item to mention is this isn't a permissions problem. I set the permissions to 777 to both the home and kiosk directories (and 666 to the web files) just to be sure that's not the problem.

I recently started using SVN with Apache for my web development, although I find it really annoying that I have to issue two SVN commands (one local, one remote) to update my web site. I have been looking into SVN post-commit hooks to solve this problem. The only problem is that apache does not have permission to modify files in my user directory... So here is how everything is setup. I am running Slackware 13 full install. There have been no installations overriding any of the default installs.

I have a problem with running Apache web server. I think my problem is either I can not get httpd to load automatically or it's being blocked from external unless I'm logged in, don't know which. Or, I'm completely off base. Either way, being logged in solves the problem. Now I just need to fix it. This is a brand new server running latest apache and fedora 10 (all fully patched). Loaded from source to all default (non RPM directories - apache is /usr/local/apache2/... )
I modified the existing /etc/init.d/httpd script and had it point to the /usr/local/apache2 areas.I even did a chkconfig --add httpd and show it is on for run levels 2345.The problem is that when I reboot the server httpd does not load because I can not access the website. However, the minute I login to the server as a user (non-root) it automatically loads httpd and the website works. Then, when I logout, everything is inaccessible again. I even tried to put the commands in the /etc/rc.local script (or wherever it is).Same thing happens.I know this is a simple fix. Just don't know what it is. Is it related to SElinux? However, wouldn't SElinux create access problems regardless of being logged in or not? Once I'm logged in, everything automatically fixes itself (either it's a service load or a rights filter fix).
Remember, everything works perfectly as long as I'm logged in to the server (even as a non-root user). Just the act of logging in makes the web server accessible from to the rest of the world. However, when I logout, the web server is inaccessible.

I am new to Linux. I installed some weeks ago Fedora 14 via burnt iso file downloaded from official Fedora site. It was working perfectly like a charm for me until yesterday when I tried to install zend server for PHP. During my first try of installation of zend server it corrupted out my apache server and I lost apache on http://localhost. I removed all "zend-server" like stuff from "Add Remove Software" screen. Installed again apache 2 in the form of LAMP (Linux Apache Mysql Php) via terminal. Apache installed correctly and started workeing again ok on localhost. Then again I tried to install zend server from install.sh file in downloaded zend server installation. It showed me after a while like "zend server installed successfully".
I shut down my pc thinking everything is ok now. Today when I started my system, it shows me boot screen of Fedora, I select fedora and then it shows me balloon filling up for around 5-7 secs. Then all of a sudden a black screen appears up with a cursor blinking at its top left and then nothing else happens further. I cannot find login screen to my desktop anymore. I remember one thing that during reinstallation of apache from terminal, I set following command like "chkconfig --level 235 httpd" (I guess that's what I have written as per some online tutorial for LAMP). Is that cause of mine problem ot its something else?

I am using this config.
I'm looking to create a white-list of email addresses that are allowed to send mail to my son's email address. Basically, I'm trying to do this:
if from not in ('dad@home.net','mom@home.net','unclebill@work.org')
then deliver to 'dad@home.net'
Or deliver to /dev/null or something.
This would be only for his account/domain, not server-wide.
The configuration above uses MySQL for forwarding and authentication. I'm not sure if that is a plus or minus for what I'm trying to do.

I'm having trouble setting up a vsftp server correctly. What I want to do is allow a number of users to log on (no anonymous user) and each of them to be taken to their own "top level directory" from which they can not escape.
I've got most of this working, but I can't find a way to automatically transfer each user to *their* working area. The "local_root" directive doesn't quite do what I want as everybody has to share the same working area (potentially users could interfere with each other). On the other hand I don't want each user to work from their home directory because there are loads of special files there that I don't want users playing with.
To add one extra compilation, I'm also running an html server on the same machine. One of the directories the html server can see is one of the ftp area root directories (So what I'm trying to do is give one special user ability to ftp files onto the html server. Other users must *NOT* have this ability)

I am new to ldap. I've installed openldap server in a centos but yet to test it. My question is how to force user to login to the system using ldap instead of non-ldap login? For example, I created some users in the ldap server, these users are exist in /etc/passwd, when ssh login to server as user, it normally authenticates through /etc/passwd file without being forced to use ldap.

I installed Centos 5.5 on a home PC to be used remotely.
All server daemons work fine but only start if the user is logged in.
How do I set the SSH server to start whenever the PC is turned on, rather than when the user is logged in? I read the chkconfig man page online but couldn't find anything.
Plus I put a script in my startup services to be run whenever the computer boots (I'm guessing when the users logs in). How do I go about setting that to run too whenever the system boots instead?

My goal is this: Allow a user to connect to a server via SSH with any login name or password without checking to see if that account exists on that server. Their account would be captured by a universal account say, 'generic_user', and then they would be directed to one of my python scripts with the username and password they supplied for initial login. At this point my script would capture their SSHD process ID and allow/deny their existence based upon a MySQL/Subscription check.
The part I'm having trouble with is with PAM and allowing the user to login with any credentials and be successfully authenticated under the generic account. Beyond that, everything is great.

So I've been trying to get a single user to login to an FTP site I've created using proftpd and I haven't had much luck. So check this out: this only applies to one user, I can "su" to the user account so I know the password is set, and I am even able to SSH into the box as this user. This totally eliminates a bad/incorrect password and the server IS accepting connections on port 21 because I can FTP as other users. I've ruled out the client because I tried locally and using a command promptWinders but still no luck. This is what I'm seeing in the logs when I attempt to connect using an FTP client.

I've had a server setup working perfectly for the last 2 years. Today we installed a newer version of postgresql and recompiled apache/php.
Postgresql will not start now.
"service postgresql start" = /var/lib/pgsql/data is missing. Use "service postgresql initdb" to initialize the cluster first. To initdb we need to be as user postgres.
"su - postgres" = "no file or directory"
In /etc/passwd = postgres:x:26:26:PostgreSQL Server:/var/lib/pgsql:/bin/bash
how i can login as postgres user and enter these commands?
