Dec 6, 2010I am running 10.04 (i686) inside kvm-qemu client. The host is a headless 10.04 (x64).The issue is that the screensaver does not activate after a certain period of idle time (1 min). I can successfully activate the screensaver by running gnome-screensaver-command -a. It appears, then, that idle time is not being registered correctly. There are some very sporadic logs in daemon.log:

Dec 13, 2010I've run ubuntu 9.04, 10.04, and 10.10 on my Dell latitude e6400. On every version the mouse buttons stop working after a few clicks, on the trackpad and with a USB mouse. lock panel is checked if i right click. If i uncheck lock panel it will work for a little bit longer then stops. Anybody know how to fix this?This is my first time using ubuntu and i really want to love it. Had xp before on the Dell, but I don't like it. We're a Mac family, but if this works ubuntu could change our minds!

Mar 22, 2011When I run top d 0.5 on my machine and I press 1 to enable the SMP View, I notice that all of the CPUs keep toggling between 100%idle and 0% idle.
The odd part is that when a CPU goes to 0.0% idle, I would expect to see one or more of the other columns peek, but they are not.
What is causing this?

Apr 14, 2010I boot it and let him stay alone without even log-in,then thru my local LAN I access the server with SSH or FTP, everything just works fine,but if I just let the server idle for a while, I stop being able to login to the server again.I get no response, and when I go check it , monitor is black, like its sleeping,Then I just press a key on the keyboard, it wakes, and I can login from the server itself.so it does not crash.But login from another computer still doesn´t work,I have to reboot the Linux server to work, and all this idle thing starts over again.

Oct 27, 2010Can anyone explain the difference between IOWAIT%/IDLE%/LOAD AVG? We have a 3 servers (oracle rac) attached to a SAN. When we added another CPU to our 3rd server, the IOWAIT across the oracle rac dropped a lot. We used to get pretty high IOWAIT % before. So I don't really understand how the extra CPU could do this. I thought the IOWAIT % is high because the server is waiting for the SAN, so I thought the SAN was the bottleneck. So I don't really understand the difference between the 3 things (iowait, idle and load avg).

The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

Jun 23, 2010I'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.
I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.

Mar 31, 2009I've always used SSH to get to my Linux server and decided to figure out VNC. I've got VNC installed just fine and was logged, then I click Exit on the VNC screen and all hell broke loose. So I'm left with a gray useless screen, so I though I would kill the process. Did a ps -aux | grep vnc and saw what is running Then did a vncserver -kill :1 and vncserver -kill :2 Then typed vncserver
Now I'm getting Warning: blahblahblah:1 is taken because of /tmp/.X1-lock Remove this file if there is no X server blahblahblah:1 Warning: blahblahblah:2 is taken because of /tmp/.X2-lock Remove this file if there is no X server blahblahblah:2 So per the man pages I need to go here $HOME/.vnc and kill something. So How do I get to $HOME/.vnc? Is this a hidden location? I'm thinking I need to do a kill -9 .X1-lock per the above Warning message but where is that?
