Jun 9, 2011My computer is running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86_64). I have set up an apache server there. The version is Apache/2.2.10 (Linux/SUSE) PHP/5.2.14 with Suhosin-Patch mod_python/3.3.1 Python/. It works well. I can reach the server and visit the webpages from other computers. The problem is every computer can visit it. I just want to some people can reach my server by specifying the IP address, or computer name, or whatever else.

Dec 7, 2010I've been trying to set up an FTP server for a client, which is something I haven't done before. Things seemed pretty straight forward at first, had everything working, but now I have just one last minor problem.
I'm using vsftpd as my FTP daemon. I managed to configure it to allow only user to log in, I have write enabled, etc. Now, this server is in the 172.16.10.* range. I have servers in two other ranges that need to connect to it and down-/upload files. These ranges are 192.168.15.* and 192.168.16.*. The ones in 192.168.15.* are physically in the same location as my FTP server. The ones on 192.168.16.* connect through a VPN, using a Netscreen 5GT firewall.
Up to this, no problem yet. The problem is this:
I tried the following from the 192.168.15.* range:
- connect: no problem
- login: no problem
- list directory: no problem
- download file: no problem
- upload file: no problem
Now I tried all of this from the 192.168.16.* range as well. Everything checked out except for one tiny crucial thing. I'm not allowed to upload files, I get "550 Requested action not permitted". I login under the same user I've verified I get the correct directory listing, so absolutely everything checks out to be the exact same.

Jul 14, 2010I've only recently encountered this problem with vsftpd when I was creating new ftp accounts. I keep on getting:
550 Access Denied.
on every action I try to do on ftp, no matter what. I've been trying to solve this myself however my attempts have been futile.
The permissions, and ownership have been checked and rechecked tens of times now, so thats not the issue. I've reinstalled the OS of my server twice now, and the problem is still persisting. Heres my config file, this isnt for anon by the way.

Sep 26, 2010Trying to set up VSFTPD on the CentOS 5 box at work, which is an internal web development server. I'm leaving soon, and all knowledge of or desire to learn SSH is going with me so the other employees will need to be able to access the web root using FTP clients.
Essentially there is no need for special user accounts or privileges, it's an internal server in a tiny company. I've got the LocalRoot set to /var/www/ which I can log in to and read all files via FTP, however despite setting everything to 777 in /var/www/ and below, I still can't get any write privileges on the FTP server.

Server :: Firefox - Unable To Access VsFTPd Directory. Connection Times Out After Authentication
Apr 13, 2011Seismicmike here. My first post. I'll try to be as clear and concise as possible. For the sake of this post, I'm going to use 1.2.3.4 as a place holder for my public IP. On my web server, I would like to be able to access the /var/ftp directory through a web browser. I have successfully done so with Google Chrome, but I cannot access the directory in Firefox or IE. Both FF and IE ask me for authentication but then time out attempting to load the directory.
I suspect that there may be something up with switching to passive mode and/or that this issue may be more with my configuration of Firefox and not with the server (seeing as how Chrome works). Another possibility may be related to SSL. When I connect with FileZilla, I have to use the FTP over Explicit SSL/TLS option in order to connect. In any case I still would like to fix it. I would also like to avoid having to install FireFTP if at all possible.
Steps to reproduce (not that you can without my actual IP =J):
* Open Chrome
* Go to ftp://1.2.3.4
* Enter username
* Enter password

Nov 15, 2010I'm a terrible procrastinator, it's awe-inspiring annoying and stressful. This in combination with being a information-holic makes the Internet fairly lethal to me; I risk failing my college course because of it, so trust me when I say I'm deadly serious about this.
However, I think you guys may be able to help out, and maybe this will also help some people here with similar problems:
Because so much of my time is taken up with Interwebz, I thought to carefully restrict my internet use. It's not prefect, but it's part of a solution.
To date: I have Firefox and the ProCon extension which uses a whitelist of websites I can access. The extension cannot be uninstalled/disabled and I use a long hex password split into 3 parts, two of which my friends have (so I have to ask my friends for the password parts in order to update the whitelist, hence making it socially awkward to fritter away time online).
So far, it has worked a treat and I'm really pleased with it.
However, this is the problem:
I need to restrict web access so *only* Firefox can access the web. That way I cannot use Chrome/Opera, or even (shudder) use wine to run Internet Exploder.

Oct 7, 2010I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04 32-bit.I'm looking to find if there is anyway I can lock down ubuntu so that remote access, whether it be SSH, ftp, apache.etc can be only accessed from a certain IP range, or a certain set of IPs?Essentially, we'll say the Server IP is 192.168.1.32, and I want the IP addresses 192.168.1.33-50 to be able to access the server, but no other IPs.I am in a switched environment, router's are not allowed to be placed on the network, and I do not have access to a DNS or DHCP server.Is there a way to do this in on the server via a configuration of some sort?

Jul 28, 2011I'm running Natty and have made two logins on the system. One for myself and family and one for the kids (teens 14-15yr) to play in without Internet access via Admin "Users and Groups". I have hidden the Internet software icons on their screen amongst others i don't want them to see on the menus. On our screen I use a Firefox addon called "Web Of Trust" that can be configured easily for the kids and another addon called 'Blocksite' that I can selectively use for them and myself etc.
I have found out that they have still been able to get on to the net somehow under their login. Will have to observe again!! In the users settings for the kids the tick box for 'Internet'and 'use modem' access is un-ticked so I presumed that would be enough! Not so!!
