I've been trying to set up an FTP server for a client, which is something I haven't done before. Things seemed pretty straight forward at first, had everything working, but now I have just one last minor problem.
I'm using vsftpd as my FTP daemon. I managed to configure it to allow only user to log in, I have write enabled, etc. Now, this server is in the 172.16.10.* range. I have servers in two other ranges that need to connect to it and down-/upload files. These ranges are 192.168.15.* and 192.168.16.*. The ones in 192.168.15.* are physically in the same location as my FTP server. The ones on 192.168.16.* connect through a VPN, using a Netscreen 5GT firewall.
Up to this, no problem yet. The problem is this:
I tried the following from the 192.168.15.* range:
- connect: no problem
- login: no problem
- list directory: no problem
- download file: no problem
- upload file: no problem
Now I tried all of this from the 192.168.16.* range as well. Everything checked out except for one tiny crucial thing. I'm not allowed to upload files, I get "550 Requested action not permitted". I login under the same user I've verified I get the correct directory listing, so absolutely everything checks out to be the exact same.
I have a vsftpd server configured and I cannot upload using anonymous account, I've trawled the net have have exhausted my search for answers. Here is my vsftpd.conf file

I've got that vsftpd running on a ubuntu 9.10 machine. Although I cannot upload any file, I always get a "550: Permission denied"-error.

vsftpd 2.3.2-3After user uploaded a file it has -rw-------(0600) permissions. Of course user can change permissions manualy to any he likeBut how to set for example 0700 by default?
I have many clients uploading to the same directory.
I have set chmod to 733 and chown to another user on the upload folder so that the different clients do not see each others files, but that also causes the client to not see their own files after they are uploaded or not being able to resume broken uploads.
I would like the different user log in with their own username and password but all upload to the same directory and not see each others files, but just their own. Is this possible? Or does anyone have a tip how to achieve something similar?
I use vsftpd. I would like to know if there is a way to limit the upload speed. Only the upload speed so the "anon_max_rate" and "local_max_rate" don't do the job. Someone told me about the trickle but I expected a more recent application.
And I added umask 022 to the user login script problem I have: I login with user and password that exists as a local user on my suse machine. I can read and download from my homedirectory, but I cannot upload with filezilla. Then I get the error: 550 permission denied critical file transfer error

I want to plot a set of data in only one plot.The problem is that some points of the data should be better plotted in a linear scale (lets say 0 to 100,000) but there are other data points that, exceding the value 100,000, would be better plotted in a logarithmic scale, as they goes in the range 100,000 to 500,000,000. I am now trying to setup a VSFTP server where local users can upload files to there home directory so that Apache can serve web pages straight from the directories of system user home/accounts giving users the ability to run their own web sites which are hosted off the main server [tutorial here: [url]
So far i have been able to serve/display index.html files from the users home directory [url] but so far i cant upload files to any user home directory, every time i try to upload a file with filezilla i get this error message: 553 Could not create file. Critical file transfer error
I have searched online for similar problems like mine and so far i've tried alot of the solution but none seem to work. I'm confused, dont know where i went wrong, i put the users in a group called ftpusers and here are the permissions on the users (test, ftpuser & testftp) home directory. have a look an tell me where i went wrong :(

I want to build a bash script, which can ping a range IP adresses which will be filled in by the admin. If there is no IP-adress filled in, then the script must ping the subnet where the system is logged on. So if my ip is 192.168.1.6, then the script must ping from 192.168.1.1 till 192.168.1.255 Or else, if there is given a beginning and ending ip it must ping that!
The first part of the bash script is to ping a given range (see below). But there is one problem, how can I tell the script to ping from $begin till $end, [..] is of course wrong! But what must be filled in there???

The second part is to find my own ip and ping the whole range.. How to do that? I only can find my own IP, but I cant ping the whole range,, how to do that?
I installed vsftpd server in one of my servers using "yum install vsftpd" command. NFS server is running in the other server and mounted as "/data" in this FTP server. root in FTP server has also root authority in NFS server. All the files and sub-folders under "/data" in FTP server have 755 or 766 mode. Even I modified vsftpd setting to allow root login.
When I login as root to FTP server with FileZilla client, I can see all the file list in root home directory and move to /data directory. I can download any file in a local HDD but I can not download any file in /data directory.
have setup a LAMP server with ubuntu 10.04 server edition x86 for my study in VMware Workstation 7.1 For a assignment I had to make a php script that would load a file up to the server and set the name in a mysql database. According to the book the server should set the image in a cryptic folder in the /tmp/ folder.
This isn't working and i also try'd locate and find to find the image i uploaded. I checked the php.ini and file uploads were on but no folder so i set that one to /tmp/ but still no images. Can anyone help me with enabling this function?

How can I see which SELinux rule kicks in at a given point. Is there something like debug-mode for SELinux? The problem is that SELinux Troubleshooter does not show any errors at all when denial happens.

I then put my new key onto my file server and attempted to connect to the FTP and it failed (this did work before with the default key).. I use curlFTPfs to mount the FTP directory locally as /ftpbackup, below is the command and the output.

Error connecting to ftp: server certificate not activated yet. As you see it gives an error about the certificate not being activated, I have looked this up and cant find a way to activate it.

I just upgraded to jessie and now Samba won't let me log in anymore. I merged smb.conf manually. It now looks like this (removed comments):

If I provide a wrong password, it raises NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE, also if retry with the correct password.
Not sure about what resolved the issue. But after I purged samba, reconfigured it, added the users AND set www-data's shell to bash again (which was changed during the update), it now seems to work
I configured my apache2. On my Intrepid I had apache2.0 while on my Karmic I have a apache2.2. Aftere configuring I tested it and got a an error page when I tested it in my web browser. I looked into the log file that showed the following error "[client 127.0.0.1] (13)Permission denied: access to /my_dir/ denied".
It appears apache2.2 can't access directories in my home folder. File system rights for the files and folders are correct. There is no AppArmor profile for Apache. User settings in "/etc/apache2/apache2.conf" file are correct. The inaccessible folder in "/etc/apache2/sites-available/default" looks as follows:

A trick using symbolic links didn't work either. On my previous Intrepid with Apache 2.0 my pages worked like a charm. Now on my current Karmic (before apache2.conf was pre configured, now it's not) with Apache 2.2 my pages are wrecked. how I can make Apache2.2 access folders in my home folder and which settings are needed in default file for that?
I just installed Ubuntu server and wish to run an apache web server from it. I have that setup, with each user having their individual folder. (E.G) apache root /var/www/ LazerPhreaks folder is /var/www/LazerPhreak/ so their website would be www.mysite.com/LazerPhreak/) I wish to setup vsftp to let each user access their individual folder and upload website files via ftp. How should I go about this?
