how can i convert the ubuntu server into gui except gnome,xbuntu,kde enviornment. as they are very heavy. the purpose is basic trouble shooting like network card,internet browser,terminal command line shell prompt,login logout etc.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop PC running Ubuntu 9.04. It has an AMD Athlon 3000 processor and 2G of RAM with two HDDs, one 450G, the other 110G. All my data on the desktop is backed up on the 2nd disk, together with data from 3 laptops. My plan is to use the desktop as a file and print server for the other machines and in the process free up some work space on my desk as I'll no longer need the screen and keyboard for the desktop.
So, I think, all I have to do is download the 32bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 Server Edition and install it on the desktop. Then I'll be able to access the backed-up data on the 2nd drive, and have an in-house web server as well. I will be able to administer the new server from one of the other machines, hence the free desk space.
For converting a WMA to a MP3 stream 24h by day, I consider to lease a virtual server.
Is this basically possible in linux (ubuntu server 8.04), maybe with Video LAN Client software?

I have tried my pc to turn into web server by fedora 14 and I am successfully to do it. But I have only one pc and It's Intel dual core with 2 gb ram. I know It's pretty good configuration for F14. I have these file systems for my linux distro. I dual boot with another OS that has its own file system. My primary disk drive has ten(10) partitions of various sorts to implement this. If I boot Linux, is there some way to point the virtualization parts at those other file systems to boot rather than load other different files into Linux file space?
Clearly, I'm missing something in how Wine, VirtualBox and similar virtualization currently happens. But what I describe above surely seems more attractive.

It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible.My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet.The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.
In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. I have got a running mail server on CentOS5.4 Final using Zimbra free edition. . Assume that domain is organization.com.local And it is running fine with users created and bugzilla running on the same machine can send mails using this server. But it can obviously send messages to the internal users. There is this option to configure it to use external mail server to send mails outside the network but my external smtp server needs an authentication.Is it possible to configure it this way to use my external server to send mails from internal domain to say gmail?
