Ubuntu :: Server 10.04 And Samba Server Admin - Share Media Files Between Computers

May 25, 2010

I have a LAN of about 70 computers that I would like to share media files between. I have gotten to the point with Samba that I can view the files without a username/password from client PC's. I would like to make all the folders read only except for one which will be writable for everyone. The thing that I am having a hard time with is allowing a couple of administrators (on Windows 7 machines) read/write access for all files/folders. I am completely new to Ubuntu and Samba so please make explanations thorough. Here is /etc/samba/smb.conf file:

Ubuntu Servers :: Headless GUI Admin Server 10.04?

May 4, 2011

I have been having some trouble configuring a means to remotely administer an Ubuntu Sever 10.04 machine i recently built and am hoping for some guidance. I'm sorta new to linux so please forgive my ignorance of conf files and the command line . I am looking to have this server serve as...VPN Server, Minecraft Server, KVM Server, Torrent and Dyn-DNS box.I have managed to install all the KVM settings including bridged networking running (Personal victory there) and sorta have Minecraft running (only need to figure out how to make it launch on boot). Torrents already taken care of since Transmission came along with the ubuntu desktop install .The big thing that is slowing me down is remote management. I installed ubuntu desktop (thankfully its Gnome 2), i know that most people don't like it but its what i'm most familiar with. I tried running VNC but always needed to login on the physical machine before I could use that which defeats the purpose. I am now using xrdp which frankly the performance is terrible compared to what i was getting with the built in VNC server and still needed the monitor on and active to connec

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing Zend Server \ When Log In To The Admin Interface, It Told It Couldn't Start The Webserver?

Oct 18, 2010

I had installed apache previously on my system, and I think I uninstalled it completely, although remnants might have remained. I have just installed zend server ce php 5.3, and I am having trouble getting it to work. When I log in to the admin interface, it told me it couldn't start the webserver, so I go to restart apache, and it gives me this:* Starting web server apache2 Syntax error on line 6 of /etc/apache2/sitesenabled/zendserver_gui.conf:Invalid command 'php_admin_flag', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configurationThis has to do with php_mod some how... but I am not sure how to fix this, or where to start, since I am relatively new to actually setting up apache.I thought this might have something to do with libapache2-mod-php... so I went to reinstall it, and ran this:

mburns@mb2449-laptop:~$ sudo aptitude install libapache2-mod-php5

I can login with admin and anonymous, but when I try non-admin user ldap respond:

Code: Select all conn=1137 op=2 RESULT tag=97 err=49 text=

Is there any requirements for creating a non-admin login user, because the "user", that I've created is not ObjectClass: Posix-Account, but ObjectClass: person, organizationalPerson?

Also I've tried to add ObjectClass shadowAccount and SimpleSecurityObject, but without any success...

Debian :: Can't Get Sudo / Admin Privileges

Jan 11, 2016

receive bash notice: "jim is not in the sudoers file."Just finished my first Debian install several hours ago, my first go around w/Debian. Installed 8.2 DVD ISO on USB. Had this issue from my first use in BASH, not a forgotten password problem. So 2 questions:

1) I'll be installing Debian again, and want to avoid this in future. There were 2 inputs on setup for name (my full name) and user (installer offered my first name which I accepted). 2 inputs for Password as well: I used the same password both times (have done this w/Mint & Ubuntu w/out issue).

2) How to fix this? Tried this: URL...however, neither keystroke got me to "rescue" prompt as article suggests. Several other articles presume an admin with privileges has sudo access to modify sudoers file.

I have multi-boot setup in BING environment (MBR, not EFI). I am booting from a GRUB2 ISO using grub commands as I still need GRUB installed in my boot partition until I can get cmd line access. I'm able to get a session on boot with the same password I used in setup.

Fedora :: DokuWiki: Unable To Admin

Apr 1, 2011

I'm trying to get DokuWiki running on Fedora 14 and Apache 2, but I run into some problem which was appearently described earlier [URL]

and seems to have gone unsolved in those threads.

I have Apache 2 running (which I can see by surfing to "localhost") and I have DokuWiki callable (which I can see by surfing to "localhost/dokuwiki").

Also, I adjusted the SELINUX context as described by [URL]

Since the DokuWiki installation is totally fresh, I should now either be able to call "localhost/dokuwiki/install.php" to do further adjustments or to call some admin.php by URL or using some button on the local DokuWiki start page.

However, none of the admin scripts is callable by URL, and there's no admin button shown on the DokuWiki start page.

Ubuntu :: 3 User Accounts 1 Admin?

Feb 6, 2010

I'm installing a new laptop for a friend of mine and he wants 3 user accounts, similair to how he runs his windows setup.

1, an admin account, we have called this account peacemaker.
2. his account
3. an account for his girlfriend.

The problem we have is that if we want to do anything from the terminal that requires elevated priviledges, sudo does not accept his password or that of peacemakers. we have done sudo -i -u peacemaker but it still doesn't accept either password, stating his account is not in the sudoers list.

I'm not a massive expert here, but research brought me to this page:[URL]... But that then just means his account has admin rights, which is what we were trying to avoid. We wanted a setup similair to windows where if you want to run someting with elevated privledges if pops up asking for the admin password. This works in the gui, but not in the terminal.

So in short, my question is, is there anyway of having the terminal accept peacemakers user rights from the his normal user account? If I add the account to the sudoers list like it suggests, does this again just give his account the prilvedges rather than saying supply me with the password for peacemaker.

this is probably not really needed and he can just have his account as the main user, but coming from a windows background, he would prefer the 3 user accounts model (2 normal users, 1 admin)

Ubuntu :: Admin Access To System?

Mar 2, 2010

While messing around with file permissions and ownership of /var/www/ i seem to have locked myself out of being able to administer users on my 9.10 system.

when I go to the user administration screen in the icon with the keys is grayed out. with the message "not authorized to make changes". My account seems to have lost admin access. But, I'm the only user on the system.

I presumed I somehow changed my group status from the root group to something else

but, sudo usermod -g root [my name] just returns "no changes made"

All I can do for now is run as the su from the terminal. Is it possible to log into gnome with a root account?
