View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed ProFTPD. So I want to create a user namely ftpadmin. He belongs to the new usergroup ftpuser that I just created.
sudo groupadd ftpuser
sudo useradd -s /bin/false -g ftpuser -d /var/www ftpadmin
sudo passwd ftpadmin
.....
chmod -R g+w /var/www
and when I followed the tutorial
chown -R ftpadmin /var/www/*, chgrp -R users /var/www/*
it returned an error "invalid mode: ftpadmin " why?I want my users to login my server via FTP
I made the mistake of using the command 'adduser' on an already existing user. I was incrementing a name and mis-typed. Now the account refuses to recognize the users password. The user can get in.
I tried resetting the password as administrator (passwd 'user'), but when the user tries, the new password isn't recognized.
I tried expiring the account password (passwd -e user). The user gets prompted for a new password, but the new password still doesn't get recognized.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just tried to change a user account by changing its name, password, and home directory. But first I had created a new account with the new name, pass, home directory. I tried to log into the new account but got a dead account. Nothing came up, and it didn't allow anything, complaining about "can't create Nautilus," and other such error messages.
Tried to go into the Constantine login screen and put in "root" and the original password. "Invalid Use..." Tried "root" with the new pass. "Invalid..." So what can I do at this point to get in and create a nice, clean, new account (with admin privs) for the new user?!
I had two accounts. One was an admin and I set the other as an admin as well, but left it without a password since I wanted the new user to enter it themselves. I went into the new admin account and deleted the old, passworded one.
However, this new account doesn't have a password that I explicitly defined on it. How do I change that? The account is the only one and still 'disabled'.
I recently ran into a situation where the ftp user account suddenly could not login. I used the User and Groups system tool to check the user account and reset the password. I then attempted to use ftp and login with the new password and still could not. I then went to check the permissions on the folder and found that the system partition was full, so using gpartd I was able to resize the system partition.
However this still did not fix the ftp login problem. When I opened the User and Groups tool again, all users,including my main account, except root are no longer displayed and all groups are not showing. If I try to add the original ftpuser account I get the message that the user already exists. And my main account works for login still. If I add a new user, it is not displayed in the list either.
If I do a cat /etc/passwd I see all the users listed including the new one I created and cat /etc/group displays all the groups and everything looks like the users are still associated with the correct groups. I can use passwd to change the account password without error and I can use adduser to add another user. Howerver no users are listed in the User and Groups tool and users still can not login to ftp. I can reinstall proftp if needed but I would like to be able to use the User and Groups tool to administer users again.
PS: Forgot that just before encountering the ftp login problem, Update Manager and some updates listed that I attempted to install but got an error and didn't have time to check why. Now I know that the partition was full.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04. I installed it a few days ago.
When I open Synaptic Package Manager, it asks for admin password. But, after I give the password, the window vanishes. Thus, I am not able to open Synaptic Package Manager in non-admin account.
If root is disabled by default, how is it possible that someone managed to SSH into my computer using root? I never enable/set password for root, it's always left as the default as per a fresh install and I always use sudo for any admin tasks.Auth.logFirst there are a whole load of failed attempts then...

Is there a system admin tool for RHEL on montioring and logging system memory used and released that can dump to a log file?I'm having an issue with memory not being released when an application is closed. I need to have a tool monitor and log so I can troubleshoot to verify that it's an application not the OS.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhile messing around with file permissions and ownership of /var/www/ i seem to have locked myself out of being able to administer users on my 9.10 system.
when I go to the user administration screen in the icon with the keys is grayed out. with the message "not authorized to make changes". My account seems to have lost admin access. But, I'm the only user on the system.
I presumed I somehow changed my group status from the root group to something else
but, sudo usermod -g root [my name] just returns "no changes made"
All I can do for now is run as the su from the terminal. Is it possible to log into gnome with a root account?
A member suggested I install Samba (to be able to print to a Windows computer's printer).
I added Samba clients and support files using Add/Remove Software.
I rebooted, and found that the Printers choice in System/Administration had disappeared.
Could someone please suggest how I can get the Printers choice back? maybe a Terminal command to run the Printers config app so I can add a network printer?

I have gotten to the point with Samba that I can view the files without a username/password from client PC's. I would like to make all the folders read only except for one which will be writable for everyone. I am facing login issues when i try to login as admin using phpldapadmin into ldap server. Installed phpldapadmin for administering ldap server from the repository:

2)yum install phpldapadmin
Able to see the default phpldapadmin login page.
ldapadmin throws the error as "Bad username/password.Please try again"
But when i login as anonymous i am able to login but the web page asks whether to create the root domain?
whether anything needs to be done for making it login as admin.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter installing the 32 bit desktop version 10.04 on vmware 6 and then rebooting ( a number of times) I get the message "the guest operating system has disabled the processor". This doesnt seem to happen when I install the 64bit version though. I have 9.1 running in 32bit versions in vmware and several other operating systems.I am not sure if any of those things would cause this issue but I have read in posts about people having issues with RAID and speed stepping. I'm sorta new to linux so please forgive my ignorance of conf files and the command line . I am looking to have this server serve as...VPN Server, Minecraft Server, KVM Server, Torrent and Dyn-DNS box.I have managed to install all the KVM settings including bridged networking running (Personal victory there) and sorta have Minecraft running (only need to figure out how to make it launch on boot). Torrents already taken care of since Transmission came along with the ubuntu desktop install .The big thing that is slowing me down is remote management. I installed ubuntu desktop (thankfully its Gnome 2), i know that most people don't like it but its what i'm most familiar with. I tried running VNC but always needed to login on the physical machine before I could use that which defeats the purpose. I am now using xrdp which frankly the performance is terrible compared to what i was getting with the built in VNC server and still needed the monitor on and active to connec

I've tried to configure :
- a wired network
- a wireless network
- a mobile broadband network as both "system connection" and "automatic connection".
I need to have a laptop that will try to connect as sson as I plug the ethernet cable in or as soon as it senses a certain SSID or as soon as there's a mobile broadband device plugged into a USB port. Non-system connections are working but I am not willing the actual user (non-admin) to read the WPA2 key or the SIM PIN. But the check box for the system connection is disabled. And running "sudo kcmshell4 --icon networkmanager kcm_networkmanagement kcm_networkmanagement_tray" doesn't result in a system connection.
I am first time working on 389 Directory server. I have installed 389 Directory Server on RHEL5.5 Server using following steps
1. yum install java-1.6.0-openjdk
2. yum update
3. rpm -ihv epel-release-5-3.noarch.rpm
4. cd /etc/yum.repos.d/

6. yum install 389-ds
389-ds installation completed successfully without any error but when I want to setup it, I didn't find any fedora directory in /opt or any where also tried to find setup-ds-admin-pl script but it is also not available anywhere on server.

Managing MySQL servers can be quite complicated without a proper tool.I have used some commercial tools over the years, but I need something that is Web based, accessible from internet.There are NOT many offerings out there, so I wonder if, beside one company that launched a product quite recently (Novaquantum), there is something else out there that can I can compare it with?I guess when you find something that you like, you'll always to look for something better (PhpMyAdmin doesn't count!)
