Server :: LDAP Configuration / Admin Username And Password Are Set Correctly?

May 13, 2010

I have set it up, but I'm not sure whether the admin username and password are set correctly. How do I confirm? Also, if someone has any links explaining the format of an LDIF file.

Server :: RHEL, And LDAP Authentication, Username Yes, Password No?

Jan 10, 2011

I started a new job and they use LDAP here. I built a new RHEL 5.5 server and configured LDAP. Usernames are recognized but the password is not. I can chown a file to a user name but when I try to login as the user it won't accept the password.I know the password is correct because I can login to any of the old boxes and it accepts the password. I ran authconfig-tui to tell my RHEL box to authenticate to ldap.

OpenSUSE Network :: Setup A LDAP Server Using The Yast-LDAP Server Configuration Tool

May 31, 2010

we have a weird problem with our opensuse 11.2 server installation.

We want to set up a LDAP Server using the Yast-LDAP Server configuriation tool.

This indeed already worked weeks ago until....this week.
Maybe some updates??!

I do not know what happend exactly. The server just does not want to start again and throws following error:

Starting ldap-serverstartproc: exit status of parent of /usr/lib/openldap/slapd: 1 failed

This happend after a little check of the configuration, but without a change, with Yast. Google delivered only "reinstall your box"-answers.

So.. i did that. And now the "mystical" part: The SAME ERROR occurs with a fresh vanilla system with a brand new and simple configuration (certificats, database, pw...the first Yast config dialog...). I did not change the way i set it up.

I remember, when i did this the first time with 11.2 on that machine, when no problems occured...everything was running out of the box (except the "use commen server certificate" option...).

Debian Configuration :: Default Admin Password For Ntop

Feb 1, 2016

I installed it from the packages list and the eye candy has been good.

However, in trying to fix an error showing up in syslog

Feb 1 17:37:38 host ntop[30764]: **ERROR** Buffer too short @ dataFormat.c:144 (increase to at least 56) [230982 years, 187 days 7:107374]

I started looking at the configuration files; well attempted. It asks for a login. It isn't any user or root, but apparently is admin, but IO don't ever remember setting it.

Various web search suggests it is done at compile(downloaded compiled) /installation, but I have no recollection of entering any.

There is a Redhat/Centos wrinkle ntop -set-admin-passwd=password; but that puts out a lot of lines, then hangs and has no effect.

Note, despite message(old version of ntop), it is up todate in packages.

Debian Configuration :: When User Is Admin Root Password Is Still Needed

May 7, 2015

I'm using Debian Jessie Cinnamon right now. I've got 1 user account on my machine--fred--as well as root, of course. "fred" is an administrator, and many times that is enough for root priviledges, for example, I can install packages via apt or dpkg. However, I cannot access "Users and Groups", or install packages via GDebi, with my password. For that, I have to have the root password.

I know that it is possible to let the admin account handle everything and not even need root--for example, Mint and (I believe) Ubuntu do it this way. I don't know how, though.

Code: Select allgroups fred
fred : fred cdrom floppy sudo audio dip video plugdev netdev lpadmin scanner bluetooth

I did disable the root account by Code: Select allsudo passwd -l root to see if it would make any change. Nothing different happened except that I now can't use GDebi or access "Users and Groups" since the root account and therefore password is inactivated. Not a big deal to get it back, though.

Ubuntu Servers :: LDAP - Cannot Get The Replication Server Operating Correctly

Jun 7, 2010

I have successfully installed Openldap and am able to authenticate to it, but I can not get the replication server operating correctly. I have followed all of the steps in doing so from this guide, [URL], but there are a few things i don't understand. when creating the consumer_sync.ldif file on the consumer server it says to replace ldap01.example.com to your server's hostname.

would this be the provider or consumer? My porvider is ldap@tech.local and my consumer is ldap-backup@tech.local.... so what one are they refurring to with the ldap01? And is there a way to push, or sync the two server manually? How do I know if they are backing up properly? How do I test?

Ubuntu Security :: SSH Server - Username / Password Encrypted

Jan 31, 2010

There was a recent thread in this forum regarding capturing of SSH passwords via the use of wireshark. The thread subject was closed, which is a decision that I both agree with as well as agree with the reasoning behind. The thread, however, raised a point of curiosity and concern that I would like to ask about. Quoting from a the book, SSH, The definitive guide,

The client authenticates you to the remote computer's SSH server using an encrypted connection, meaning that your username and password are encrypted before they leave the local machine. The SSH server then logs you in, and your entire login session is encrypted as it travels between client and server. Because the encryption is transparent, you won't notice any differences between telnet and the telnet-like SSH client.

I was under the impression that SSH was impervious to this type of eavesdropping, and quite frankly I take great comfort in that idea. I personally, only allow RSA keys for SSH access and (hopefully) avoid this problem (?) as a result. Does SSH really have a vulnerability in that the authentication is sent via plain text? How to ensure the security of SSH and not on anything that could be considered a how to 'crack' it.
