Fedora :: CUPS Admin Authorization?
Apr 6, 2011
I just discovered that using the web interface to CUPS on my localhost I cannot apparently, authenticate. The dialog pops up, but will not accept my root user name or any other. I tried using lppasswd to create add root, but it just keeps failing. Don't remember having this problem with F12, but I recently upgraded to F14...

My CUPS server has hung. Doesn't ask login user/pwd any more - goes straight to admin page. When I try to add printer I get an authorisation error. So unable to do any admin functions: add printers, disable Kerberos authentication etc.

I have an HP printer that I can't connect to. For some reason, CUPS is demanding a username and password.I know there's a way to manually edit the cupsd file, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for in it to shut off the dialog, so I can just go in and add a printer. Anybody else had this problem? I tried using a text browser, and ran into the same problem.

I am unable to access cups admin via 631 port. Since I'm running non-desktop server I can't use localhost:631. In cupsd.conf I added a listen line for the client machine ip (the one I use to access cups) but no go. I also added Allow directives with this ip in the <Location> blocks. Nothing works. Cups server is running

I cannot navigate my windows network because of a unresolved issue.
see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...8#post11131098
The workaround is to use the IP address of the computers.
Problem is that CUPS has the printer address with the computer name as opposed to IP addresses.
CUPS will not let me manage the network printer. It asks for a user and password. My sudo name and password dont work.
I think the solution lies in the cups.conf but I am unsure how to fix it so that I can manage the printers.

I can connect to the HTTP cups interface (localhost:631) but if I need admin priviledges, giving my id/pwd doesn't work. I don't see any "cups" group defined.
Otherwise, how do I enable a printer? I could disable it using the KDE printer management interface, but I can't re-enable it using same... Answer: /usr/sbin/cupsenable

Iceweasel can't find the file at /usr/share/doc/cups/online-docs/admin.
So, click "Overview of CUPS" insted, then scroll halfway down, click "Administration" under Where Do I Begin? BINGO, you can proceed. My penguin is Debian squeeze AMD64.

I'm having issues with the gnome-packagekit not working as a user. It runs fine as root but I don't want to have to login each time to run it.
The gnome-packagekit used to ask for root password but has stopped doing so. Anyone remember or have a fix for this?
The cancel button does not work either, I need to close with the X for the window...
It now gives this error.. Authorization Failed You have failed to provide correct authentication

It took me a while to get VNC going. It was easier with FC8-10. Once I got finished and was actually able to log in and see my remote desktop I tried to add some software... virtualbox. When I double click on the RPM I get popup that states."The action could not be completed. Failed to install file. You do not have the necessary privileges to perform this action" When I close that dialogue another one pops up that states" "The action could not be completed." When I click on more details the dialogue states. "Policykit authorization failure" How can I make this work?

Whenever I try and add software through packagekit I get an error telling me that Authorization failed. I would assume that I need to enter my password before the install begins but the utility never asks for it. I am able to start package kit with sudo and it then adds the software but that keeps most of the packages from running as they were added as root.

Using SSH all the time on my home network. I use ssh-keygen and ssh-copy-id to generate and then copy the key file. On one of my computers I've changed the default ssh port and see no way to copy the key without reverting the configuration to port 22 temporarily. This is not a big deal and would probably take less time than it has taken me to type this message.

The short story: I am trying to install Flash, and get this error:
I tried from the terminal, starting with su and authenticating myself, then running the .rpm file, and I get this:
Code:
[jason@Jaslinfed temporary_downloads]$ su
Password:
[root@Jaslinfed temporary_downloads]# ./adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch.rpm
bash: ./adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch.rpm: Permission denied
[root@Jaslinfed temporary_downloads]#
The long story: I used to use Ubuntu religiously, but with the more recent updates it's become somewhat buggy, and too Microsoft-like for me, so I decided to try a different distro. I heard Fedora was supposed to be really good, so I went ahead and snagged it. I'm relatively familiar with Linux in general, but know nothing about Fedora specifically. So far I've just had a couple of minor issues (my panel crashes and then disappears, for example) but this one is kinda big. If I can't arbitrarily install software on a whim, I might as well be using Windows.
For the record, yum seems to be working just fine; I've already installed several other applications, but for some reason I cannot install Flash. I've tried from both Opera and Firefox, and again, I even tried straight from the command line as root, but still no luck.
In case it helps: Linux Jaslinfed 2.6.38.7-30.fc15.i686 #1 SMP Fri May 27 06:02:17 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

But on my Suse laptop, the printer is not recognized. Using the YaST printer Configuations, I choose the option "Recieve Printer Information from Remote CUPS servers. But no printer is found.But... when I choose Do All Yout Printing Directly via One Remote CUPS server and enter the correct IP address (192.168.1.100), the printer is found andI am sure the printer info is broadcasted because it shows up on my second Ubuntu PC. But why is it not recognized by default on my Suse machine

Running: Ubuntu 10.10
I'm in a bind and I don't know how to get what I want. Nmap shows ipp running cups on port 631. Great, simple enough I uninstall cups, along with its dependencies. A new portscan reveals that the port is closed SUCCESS, but... Ubuntu Update Manager nags me @ every restart about the "important security" updates. I can't lock the version of cups in Synaptic, because cups is not installed! So you see I'm in a bind. If I have cups installed I have an open port, and if I uninstall cups the update manager nags me. What do I do? I've tried:
- stopping the cups service and issuing the chkconfig cups off command... (doesn't close the port)
- uninstalling cups... (update manager nags)
- fuser -k 631/tcp (great, but @ reboot the port is still open)
Please teach me how to close this port / stop this service / tell update manager to shove cups.....

cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message
cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
cupsd: Child exited with status 1!
The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.
My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .

I've been trying to figure this out for longer than I care to admit. We upgraded our print server (sysadmin) to 64 bit lucid and that moved our cups server from 1.3.7 to 1.4.3. We have a remote server that is still 1.3.7 (printhost1) but version difference doesn't seem to be relevant to the problem.
If I'm on console on sysadmin and do an lpr to a printer on printhost1, everything is copacetic. However, If I'm on a host that specifies "ServerName sysadmin" in its "/etc/cups/client.conf" access_log on sysadmin shows:
172.16.10.52 - - [22/Mar/2011:11:11:40 -0500] "POST /printers/103_hp4250 HTTP/1.1" 200 306 Create-Job client-error-not-authorized
and error_log shows:
E [22/Mar/2011:11:11:40 -0500] Returning IPP client-error-not-authorized for Create-Job (ipp://localhost:631/printers/103_hp4250) from 172.16.10.52
We've been using this method of sharing printers between locations for years and years so it not working now is a surprise.
cupsd.conf on sysadmin looks like this and is as open as I can imagine:
ServerName sysadmin
ServerAlias *
ServerAdmin webmaster
FileDevice Yes
SystemGroup staff
LogLevel info
code....
Additional symptoms are that only printers locally defined on sysadmin show up when the client uses System>Administration>Printing in gnome. Same thing when you browse printers in windows on our samba domain controller that backends on CUPS.
I just know that it's something simple that's going to make me facepalm but I'm at a loss.

My main problem is that I cannot get CUPS to change from 'Letter', which I presume is an American size, to A4, has anyone else had experience of this problem?

I had set a password for root/administrator mode. But when again it asked to register a user, I didn't registered any user (left all fields blank) and pressed on "next".After a reboot, now its asking to log in but there is no username except the "other" option. When I'm clicking on other option its showing a field to put a Username (I tried to leave it blank, used root, admin, etc etc etc but no luck) then another box is coming and asking for password, its not taking that password which I set as root password.

What is the easiest way to make it so that these transferred files will not be completely locked out and require me to go and change them one by one sohat i can access them without having to go root. Also the "apply to all subfolders and files" doesn't work. Also trying to set the SELinux rule to "userspace" doesn't do anything else. Basically i was trying to do just that transfer my $home folder over to fedora but now it's being a bit odd towards me with making everything require root access and not letting me read/write all files and folders within them.

I'm trying to get DokuWiki running on Fedora 14 and Apache 2, but I run into some problem which was appearently described earlier [URL]
and seems to have gone unsolved in those threads.
I have Apache 2 running (which I can see by surfing to "localhost") and I have DokuWiki callable (which I can see by surfing to "localhost/dokuwiki").
Also, I adjusted the SELINUX context as described by [URL]
Since the DokuWiki installation is totally fresh, I should now either be able to call "localhost/dokuwiki/install.php" to do further adjustments or to call some admin.php by URL or using some button on the local DokuWiki start page.
However, none of the admin scripts is callable by URL, and there's no admin button shown on the DokuWiki start page.

installed lenny and am trying to install brother dcp7010 again:
1) i can't start CUPS server with /etc/init.d/cups restart "file not found", there is a cups@ link in /etc/init.d.
2) when i install dcp7010 cupswrapper
dpkg -i cupswrapperDCP7010-2.0.1-2.i386.de
it ends with
" lpinfo: Verbindung zum Server nicht mglich: Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt
lpadmin: Verbindung zum Server nicht mglich: Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt"
(connection to server not possible, refused)
3)[URL] doesn't work.
4)foomatic-gui can't find the installed dcp7010 lpr-driver
brdcp7010lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.deb, (a couple of days ago it did)
This is frustrating because it worked in etch and worked for awhile in lenny. The dcp7010-scanner does work.

In F11 the administration menu had more things in it IIRC. Seems that in F12 a lot of tools are missing.Specifically the SELinux config tool is missing, but getting the rest of the menu back would be nice. I can't remember what it had but I'm sure I'll need them at some point.

I just tried to change a user account by changing its name, password, and home directory. But first I had created a new account with the new name, pass, home directory. I tried to log into the new account but got a dead account. Nothing came up, and it didn't allow anything, complaining about "can't create Nautilus," and other such error messages.
Tried to go into the Constantine login screen and put in "root" and the original password. "Invalid Use..." Tried "root" with the new pass. "Invalid..." So what can I do at this point to get in and create a nice, clean, new account (with admin privs) for the new user?!

I need to create a number of internal Linux users for admin purposes. I do not want these users to appear on the initial console login page just after Fedora boots up, as users who can attempt to log in, and I do not want to allow these users to log in directly. I merely want these users to be accessed via su, just like the root user.
