I'm trying to set up an intercepting proxy and web filter (squid+dansguardian is the plan), using firehol for firewall configuration, on Ubuntu Karmic.The client computers access the web through the proxy with no issue. But the server console cannot, though it can ping and DNS lookup.
View 2 RepliesThe title pretty much says it all. Once I get past GRUB, the font becomes HUGE and starts off screen. It appears to be center zoomed because I cannot see the login prompt nor anything I type. It's not really an emergency, I installed OpenSSH during the OS installation and can just turn it on and log in over SSH or start up Webmin. It just bugs me that I cannot figure this out.
There is no graphical environment installed, so it's not a video card issue. I tried adding vga=ask as a kernel flag and then tried several options, but to no avail.

There is an access log file, `access.log`. My question is what configuration file determines the location and the name of the access log file. How can I change them? I was trying to have access from a browser to the squirrelmail configtest page in my server, making some changes, I accidentaly remove the directory webmail. After I replace it with a backup apache2 can not start. This is what I have. Syntax error on line 281 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Syntax error on line 1 of [URL].. closed. But I am sure there is a ?> at the end of this file.Base on what I read on [URL]...-with-the-tag/ I test without the ?> also, but I got the same error.

I have a keytab generated from the KDC for both NFS server and NFS client (both RHEL6 hosts) placed in /etc, and I have configured PAM/Kerberos so I can login via SSH and see I have a valid ticket with klist.
I can login to both NFS server and NFS client via SSH and get a ticket, but I don't know where the problematic NFS permissions reside.

Now I need to do this. Simply I need to be able to create an access account for a user and then restrict access to only one folder within the website (idea is to allow this user to upload images via ftp). I did google for ftp servers and read about vsftpd but I couldn't find any tutorial on how exactly make it work with folders and specific users.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI know am going to sound silly but got to ask the following.I have been using Ubuntu for several years successfully & want to switch my five servers to Centos 5.4.I have installed a working version but I seemed to be missing something & cannot find anything on the net.
Background -
a) Running Vmware 2.0
b) installed Centos 5.4 on a virtual server with 1024 meg memory and 40Gig oh HD
c) I can use printer on nework
d) I see folders on network
e) I can ping other devices/websites from Centos server and I can ping Centos server from other devices, share folders, etc
d) Installed Webmin successfully, I think.
e) I have several domain names registered and 5 static public IP addresses
Issue -
a) I cannot access web server from outside the server, in other words, much like in Ubuntu after all configuration has been done, I can go to any computer on network and type in http://192.168.1.100 and I'll return a test page that says IT WORKS!. is this done differently in Centos.
B) when I tried https:192.168.1.100:10000 to access webmin, again I get time out error.
Questions -
a) are there any settings am missing? obviously!
b) am I missing software? I hear you can install a Cpanel type software.
c) Is there a guide that can walk me through process to setup host names, domain name, IP addresses, etc
d) If you can give me steps to follow I can have something to do some research.
I have a website on a shared hosting and the domain name of this website is hosted by the shared hosting company too. This domain name has :
- One ip address and two name servers
- ns1.companyname.com and
- ns2.companyname.com
Both name servers pointing to different ip addresses. Now I have a VPS server running on Debian 5. The new hosting gave me two ip's for this VPS.
Now I want the domain name to point to the VPS, I asked both hosting providers for the VPS and the shared hosting which host the domain name, the shared hosting tell me that it is very easy what you want to do and possible, you have just to point the domain name to the new ip of the VPS and all is fine, the seem thing confirm the VPS provider too.
Now as I have two ip's I am confusing, first :
- Which ip should I indicate when setting the domain name to point to ? because VPS has two.
- Once I point the domain name to the new ip, is there a further configuration to take on setting on the VPS ? for example should I indicate the name servers ns1.companyname.com and ns2.companyname.com on the VPS or it is not necessary ? the hosting tell me that the problem is solved once I point the domain name to the VPS ip.
- To connect to console by ssh, I am free to choose one of the two ip's of the VPS or there is just one which work for console ?

The problem is that this network is totally separate from the school network and we aren't allowed to connect it to the internet. I want all the machines to ping each other by name instead of ip using dns instead of host files on all 20 computers. I read on a site somewhere that you cannot do this because the dns queries will always go to the root servers. Is this correct? Is there some way I can do this using dns? The machine in question is using Ubuntu 9.04.

The first problem:
Fatal errors encountered installing thermal control. All the windfarm modules failed, but judging by the fact the mac doesn't sound like a jet engine, thermal control /is/ working.
The second problem:
After this, it brings up the splash screen & then the console goes dead. No keyboard, no display, no nothing; it looks like the system has hung. But... SSH is working. The system is up and as responsive as it should be!
I've tried adding video=ofonly to yaboot.conf and zapping the pram, but it made no change.
I've got a home server running ubuntu 10.0.4. It have no monitor or keyboard. So I want to access it from a serial console. (I use SSH currently but if something goes wrong, I need to be able to do something... so serial console seems a fine thing). OK, so on the server, I tell grub to output everything on ttyS0 and opened a getty on ttyS0. On the client side (Laptop running Ubuntu 10.0.4 with pl2303 USB to Serial adapter) I use Minicom.
Home server restart:I see grub menu, linux kernel messages, login prompt. But, I can't do anything:In grub or at the login prompt, no key press is recognized by the server.I've got write permission to /dev/ttyUSB0. I tried a different getty (mgetty)with no success.I stopped the getty on ttyS0 on the server. And run minicom.
From the server's minicom, if I type something, it appear on the client screen. From the client's minicom, if I type something, some garbage appear on the server screen :(One of this things for each char typed). If I short-circuit pin 2 and 3 of the client serial port, it echoed what I type. The two serial ports are connected with a nullmodem cable. (seems to be a full handshaking cable). Of course, same serial port config for both minicom, grub and getty. Hope I'm understandable enough. (English not my primary language). Can somebody help me make this *$*#! serial console working right ? I'm on it for 10 hours now with no success...
Edit : I nearly forgot to tell you I had to update the standard ubuntu kernel to 2.6.34-020634rc1-generic because there was a bug in the pl2303 driver in the stock kernel (2.6.32-25-generic) which prevented me from doing anything (even receiving).
I have a headless server, and I want to prevent GDM 2.30 from starting the graphical login on the console screen. As I use XDMCP, I still need GDM running on the server... With previous versions of GDM, I was doing that through gdmsetup, which ended with these lines in /etc/custom.conf :

but it seems that it's not working anymore with 2.30...
I got two computers with the exact same symptoms today: Both seem to be alive. They answer pings and they host virtual machines which are working. However, I cannot login via SSH. I get

On the console I can switch the ttys and enter my login credentials. After that I see the GNU/Debian Linux welcome message an no prompt. The system seems to hang. I'm able to switch the tty again and login with the same result. (I tried that three times now and I start running out of ttys.) A search on the Internet suggested some ressoucre shortage. How could I release some resoucres than? How could I further investigate the situation before just trying a hard power off?
When I run 'sendmail -bv', it sends the mail delivery status report as a mail to the root. Is there a way I can redirect this to the console instead of sending as a mail. requirement is to programatically find the mail host of the recipient for which I thought of using this 'sendmail -bv' command. Is there any other better way to find mail host of the recipient

I just did "do-release-upgrade" from ubuntu 9.10 > 10.04 > 10.10 > 11.04 which successful but after a restart, no login console just a blinking underscore. However I still able to login to server using ssh. During the boot I saw this failure "Starting system V runlevel compatibility [fail]".
