View 14 RepliesMy son's desktop has Fedora 12 and a wireless card. Everything worked for a long time until one fine day the network management just disappeared from both System/Preferences menu and the panel on top.I can run a Live CD with Fedora 12 on that machine and it immediately connects to our home wireless network. Booting from hard drive has no sign of NM. Trying to run 'yum install NetworkManager-gnome' does nothing because there is no connection. Running the same command as a LiveUser from CD does seem to install everything (but where to???), no errors reported, and still the is no network functionality upon reboot from the hard drive, even when plugging to LAN with a cable.It seems that I need NetworkManager in order to go online in order to install NetworkManager.I have other computers at home that work fine, I was able to download a couple of archives with NM, but I am new to Linux and have no idea what to do with those files.I could not find any step-by-step installation guides for NM, especially when the computer has no connection at all.

Basically I would like to know if there's is an actual web page that can be searched for the programs available under yum. I have yumex and I've tried using it but its super slow to search (sometimes it takes 5 minutes) and I would like some webpage or other method of doing a search.
View 1 Replies View RelatedUsing 11.04 and GIMP 2.6.11. When I click the rulers to add a guide, no guide is added and clicking becomes unresponsive throughout gimp. Additionally, gimp steals all keyboard input from all other applications. I found out I can restore keyboard/mouse input to normal by simply minimizing the gimp main window.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSystem -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> Options -> Remember Currently-Running Applications I have Skype added to the startup applications list. This works fine. After doing the above, two instances of Skype are starting up every time - and I have not checked the "Automatically remember ... " checkbox. I could not find a way to undo this. After doing the above again, three instances of Skype are starting up every time.

So, It appears Im going to have to do a re-install. Which, I really dont mind too much... (especially with Ubuntu) But It will stink if i *again* lose all my bookmarks , and lose track of all my installed programs. The programs, not as much of an issue as the bookmarks in my browser.. I would like to know, If I can somehow access the HDD from the LiveCD, So that I can create just a simple text list of all programs installed on the hdd? I cannot access my HDD except through the LiveCD So is there a way I can do this? Some kind of simple command I can toss into terminal, and have it output me a text file of all programs installed? or something? I really am totally clueless on how I would be able to save my chromium bookmarks.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have somehow gotten two instances of Mediatomb running on my Ubuntu 10.04.1 how to get rid of one of them.There is one copy running as a daemon on system startup - that's the one I want to keep.There is another copy running when I log in with my user account - this is the one I want to prevent from running.I have looked in my Startup folder in the GUI and also in my .profile script for my user account but I don't see any references to mediatomb there. Where else should I look?I think the daemon version is running via an entry in init.d, but other than where I've already looked I don't know how to find out how the second copy is getting initiated during login. It only seems to show up when I log in to the GUI on Ubuntu - not when I connect to the machine remotely via SSH.

Before I upgraded from Fedora 14, I could use several printers.
1. Now, when I open the print dialog, no printers show up from inside Firefox, Thunderbird, gnucash, f-spot, opera, planner, eclipse.
2. The printers ARE recognized inside Adobe acroread, bash/tcsh command line, libreoffice, openoffice, frescobaldi, gedit, evolution, gwenview, okular
3. Gimp is sort of in the middle. It doesn't show any printers in the print dialog, but I can print in only black & white via Gutenprint.
As title says, running unetbootin throws this error [URL]...... I can easily find the files myself (go to synaptic > look at installed files > scroll down) and I can't remove/purge because they would require me to remove some important software (XFCE).
FIX: Required some more 32 libraries.
I just installed Fedora 13 today, everything is working including the internet. However, when I try to get more programs it says that it cannot find the sources, and a cache reload will fix it. I wasn't sure at first what that ment, being a begginer, but I think it means going into system-refresh package lists. So I do that,ut it still wont give me the program list. I'm really confused, I come from using windows computers and I don't know what to do now, me be a little clearer, when I click on one of the catagores to find software, nothing comes up but the defalt packages that come with the system. I go into the system-Software menu, and there are no boxes cheked. I thought that this maybe to problem, so I try to cheak the top box labled without parentheses "Fedora 13 - 1386". It tells me to authenticate my action and tells me to type the root password, I do this. Then it shows the screen below. I'm running a 32 bit system,

It obviously can lock the screen and I will need to switch to other vt and kill it manually. Can it for example disrupt other GUI programs on the same X server (access a root terminal in nearby window)?
I know that it is safer to run it in separate X server, for example, in Xtightvnc or even some virtual machine, but how dangerous is to just run it like other programs?
I recently installed mplayer I compiled from svn, and now Ubuntu's package manager is showing security patches. If I install these patches, will it mess up the version I compiled and installed?

The menu no longer has MS Office in there and the only way to launch these is to do into .wine and launch it from there.
How can I bring back these links?

For which of these programs can I safely remove the suid bit? I don't want to break my system by modifying a program that the system needs.

I installed Fedora 12 on a new machine (Intel Core i3) and one of my terminal-based programs won't run because it can't find libtermcap. The specific error is

I seem to have this problem every other time I install a new Fedora. I tried a few things with old libtermcap files from other machines, and I tried looking around the YUM repository, but nothing seemed to work.

I am currently writing some convenience methods for my terminal in my bash_profile and am sure if what I am writing is "the best way". I figure a good way to verify whether what I'm doing is right or not would be to find some source code of more established programs and see how they do it.My question then is, where can I find this code on my Mac?
