Feb 10, 2010I heard Linux's security is actually worse than Windows. What could I do to make it more secure? I can't download programs such as Avast and Spybot, right?

Aug 11, 2010I installed avast anti-virus on my 10.04 T42p thinkpad. It immediately slowed to a walk! and the registration number did not work and caused an error message. I tried to reinstall the program with no improvement/same result. then tried to remove the program from the machine with dpkg. Seemed to get rid of it but some of the folders it created are still there and won't let me trash them. The machine still seems slow, so how do I get rid of all traces of avast?

Jan 29, 2010I couldn't find an answer myself. So, the problem is that every single bittorrent program I tried downloads files I checked to ignore so I know this is not a program related issue. For example, there are 2 pictures in a torrent, I select only one but in the end I have both downloaded.

Nov 26, 20101) Any process (including boot, shutdown, download, open programs, etc) is freeze (don't have any progress) until I move the mouse or hit any button, so for install and use my ubuntu I have to keep moving my mouse and as you imagine is VERY TIRED.2) I get some general freeze on random times, neither the mouse, keyboard or process move, I notice that if I unplug power it unfreze, and I can work for some time.This 2 problems annoy me a lot, and I suspect is a problem related to my Netbook Model, I read about someone that has the same problem but no solution there.
This is what I did:I Try Ubuntu loading from my USB memory (1GB), run very good but with the 2 problems, but I thought it can be resolved installing.I installed along side with W7, couldn't boot Ubuntu, so I configured GRUB2 and it could enter now, but if I don't press **** after selecting Ubuntu it give me the BusyBox, and then the same 2 problems.I get rid of my W7 and did a Full Install on my 160GB HDD, hoping it can work fine, but no.I install all updates and no effect on that.

Mar 18, 2010What the most harmful thing can malware program started as separate limited user account do if it has access to the X server? Network and filesystem things are already considered by chroot and netfilter.
It obviously can lock the screen and I will need to switch to other vt and kill it manually. Can it for example disrupt other GUI programs on the same X server (access a root terminal in nearby window)?
I know that it is safer to run it in separate X server, for example, in Xtightvnc or even some virtual machine, but how dangerous is to just run it like other programs?

Mar 10, 2011After reading Bodhi's Ubuntu security sticky, I removed the links between WINE and the various folders. However, I've lost the menu items for my programs.
The menu no longer has MS Office in there and the only way to launch these is to do into .wine and launch it from there.
How can I bring back these links?

This command:
find / -type f ( -perm -04000 -o -perm -02000 ) -exec ls -lg {} ;
gave the list below.
For which of these programs can I safely remove the suid bit? I don't want to break my system by modifying a program that the system needs.

Sep 2, 2010I was wondering if anyone might know of good reference material, books websites etc., that discuss network security issues in layman terms. I would like to set up a dedicated Linux box as a firewall and would like to have a deeper understanding of the different types of configurations that are possible. I run a dual boot system and most of the firewalls I have used on the Windows side are very confusing to me. A lot of the time they give you a pop up that informs you that some cryptically named program is trying to access the network or the internet and wants to know if I want it to or not, 99% of the time I have not idea if it is a legitimate program or not. I realize that this is probably a separate issue (knowing how to identify programs and processes that should have access from those that should not) from setting up a firewall and basic network security but I know that they are related.

If I am installing a new package from ubuntu software center, and consquently I have to log in as root to do so, which means I have given the system 'privileges' as the program is being installed, I decide to go open mozilla, and surf suspicious sites on the net. Is it possible in that case for me to get a virus?
When we enter the password for the root user in order to run one program such as ubuntu software center, does that mean that all programs have root privileges for the time being (as the software center is installing the program)?
Software :: Avast Workstation Has Corrupted Itself With It's Own Update?
Feb 21, 2011Well this is something I didn't think I'd have to deal with quite so soon after putting Ubuntu on my laptop.
Being the paranoid individual that I am, I decided to put Avast antivirus (called workstation) on my Ubuntu install. That worked just as smoothly and quickly as expected.
Trouble started when I went to update it. It freaked out and gave me some kind of error. In my moment of idiocy I forgot to write it down, but needless to say, something didn't work, and now I can't touch the avast workstation.
Attempting to open it produces an error window that only says "Error occurred in Avast! engine: invalid argument". Reinstalling does nothing, and since I'm clueless as to how Linux works, I do something I can't fix short of a reformat of the Ubuntu partition on my drive.
I've looked in the software manager, and Avast doesn't even show up in the list. I have no idea what to do at this point. I have a suspicion that when it attempted to update it's core engine the files had to be deleted, but since I didn't run it with root privileges it couldn't delete the outdated engine.
