May 15, 2010
I am using ubuntu 10.4 and cannot find add/remove programs in applications at all, it just isn't listed there. Is there anyway for me to download it. I've looked in software centre and cannot see it.

I just installed Fedora 13 today, everything is working including the internet. However, when I try to get more programs it says that it cannot find the sources, and a cache reload will fix it. I wasn't sure at first what that ment, being a begginer, but I think it means going into system-refresh package lists. So I do that,ut it still wont give me the program list. I'm really confused, I come from using windows computers and I don't know what to do now, me be a little clearer, when I click on one of the catagores to find software, nothing comes up but the defalt packages that come with the system. I go into the system-Software menu, and there are no boxes cheked. I thought that this maybe to problem, so I try to cheak the top box labled without parentheses "Fedora 13 - 1386". It tells me to authenticate my action and tells me to type the root password, I do this. Then it shows the screen below. I'm running a 32 bit system,

We do use kickstart configuration file to customize the CentOS installation. In the partitioning screen, I do see a check box for encryption (encrypting the disk blocks).
I want to remove this checkbox in my kickstart configuration file. What is the option to use to get rid of this checkbox.

I don't like KDE's program (like Amarok or Vlc or kaffein and any KDE's program) cus i think KDE's programs are mane argument to slow down speed of my ubuntu.
I'd rather a absolute gnome's environment without any KDE efficacious.
I'd rather to remove all KDE's program from my source.list if possible.

I have been trying to mount an NFS share from my REHL server for over an hour, and Google was not able to help me. when I use the command:
mount -t nfs server3:/programs /programs
I get the folowing error :
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on server3:/programs,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might
need a /sbin/mount.<type> helper program)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

I would like to disable the option to format a hard drive on the drop down menu in computer. The reason being is that it is too close to the safely remove hardware option. I have one drive with about 15 years of stuff on it that I just use as a backup, and I don't want to accidentally hit the wrong button. What I was thinking of doing is going to that section of code and commenting that line out (that way I can just uncomment it if I want to format with the GUI tool). where can I find the code for that module?

I'm unable to change startup programs. If I try and add or remove a program, any changes I have made seem to undo themselves. I suspect it might have something to do with being unable to save the session, but I really don't have a clue.
Just in case it makes a difference: I'm actually running Mint (Helena).

So a few years ago I had a guy build me a computer that solely run off Ubuntu. Was a gift to me dad and all was well...my dad just gave me the computer and there are too many problems and I am not exactly good with this kind of work.
I really just want to completely uninstall Linux so I can get windows xp on this laptop. I don't even know where to start, any ideas?
Unless of course someone can give me a crash course on how to fix me being able to download updates so that I can actually add/remove programs, get my DVD to read DVDs and many many more ridiculous things...

Since I plugged in and then unplugged in the firewire port a video camera, I have a note in the bottom-right corner of one of the desktops. It says 'libieee1284-3".
It's not a serious problem at all, I can live with it, but if there was a way to remove this yellow square from my pretty desktop I would like to hear about it .
I tried clicking and right clicking on it; it does nothing except I can access a tiny menu with - apparently - enlarge, refresh and configure buttons. Only the configure button (a spanner) does something, it opens a "configure" box which does not have a "remove" or "delete" option. Rebooting does not remove it.

Ubuntu 10.10 x64. So I want to know is there a way to disable the "Remove From Panel" option when in the context menu "Lock To Panel" is selected in Gnome. I have taken a quick look at Ubuntu 11.04 alpha it seems this is a feature set as default, it just annoys me the now and then I will remove applets when I am not intending to do so.

I'm a new Fedora user and I having difficulty with the product.I downloaded both the live cd and dvd of F13. I installed F13 from the live cd and after it completed I created my user name and then rebooted. Once I logged in I went to Administration -> add/remove program. I then clicked on package collections and ticked off the ones that I wanted. I then clicked on the APPLY button and I noticed that in the lower left corner of the screen (below the left panel and just above the Help button) it said Running and then nothing. If I attempt to close the screen it says that all selections will be lost. I also went back and set the filter to list "all installed" and the programs that I had selected were in the list.I then decided to try the dvd iso, so I blew everything away and installed F13 from there, but I encountered the same thing. So I'm at a loss what I'm doing incorrectly

I was checking out wine and installed ms office 2007 in it. But I ended up deciding (for the Windows programs that I needed to use, and the context in which I need them) to just install XP in a VirtualBox machine and use all my Windows programs there (not very many). So, I uninstalled wine and I did all of this that is recommended in the wine faq (to completely remove everything):
rm -rf $HOME/.wine
rm -f $HOME/.config/menus/applications-merged/wine*
rm -rf $HOME/.local/share/applications/wine
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/desktop-directories/wine*
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/icons/????_*.xpm
However, I now have an annoying issue. Microsoft office programs are the default opener of office documents. And since the programs no longer exist, this causes a problem. How can I remove the option to "Open With Microsoft Office ..." so that OpenOffice is the default?

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. I've created two user accounts, one for admin purposes and the other for standard users. At boot up, I have the option to pick one of the created accounts or select "automatic login." When I select automatic login, it logs me into the admin account. I've double checked that the "don't ask for password" option is not selected on either account.
The only thing unusual that I did was select the "don't ask for password" option during the install, and then later (after the install was complete) decided that's not what I wanted and unchecked it.
I need to accomplish one of two things. Either change it so the auto login applies to the standard user account, or remove the auto login option from the login screen altogether.

Somehow the -D option got tacked on to my sshd when I start up. How do I remove the -D option when sshd is started at boot? I'm guessing I need to edit something in /etc/init.d but not sure what. I checked System->Preferences->Startup Applications and the ssh server daemon isn't listed there. And since it is a command line option /etc/ssh/sshd_config is of no help.

I've just did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 x86 in a 4 gig pendrive.Just one ext4 partition for / and /home and a swap partition. Only one user created during installation.Everything's fine so far except for two things:-If I launch synaptic from the start menu, it asks for my password which I type in or even copy-paste to be sure.Strangely it always comes back saying incorrect password. If I open a terminal and call "sudo synaptic" and type in my password when prompted, the application shows up fine. Again if I do the same via the Run dialog (alt+F2), that is "sudo synaptic", nothing comes up. If I just type "synaptic", a pop up says that as a user I won't be able to install anything and blah-blah, and the application displays properly

In both of these areas, when I actually go to "Install" the things, whether it be adding or removing programs, or doing the Update Manager, I get the same error as soon as I click "Install," and it fails to install any selected programs/updates.
Here is the following error:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I have not been able to find this "sudo dpkg" file to manually run.

There were many programs automatically installed with the xubuntu-desktop.After trying the xubuntu desktop, I didn't like it and removed it from synaptic package manager but it didn't remove the programs which were automatically installed with it.Is there any way to remove those programs without having to remove them one by one?

Originaly I had Win7 and Ubuntu (Ub) set up OK in dual boot. The Ub was on a seperate drive in its own partition - then the darn drive failed. Without reinstalling Uu I still get it as an option in the dual boot menu. If I do reinstall Ub I end up with a 2nd Ub option. How can I get the boot menu to show Win7 only, so that I can re-install Ub with only 1 entry in the boot table?
I have tried using bootrec.exe from the command line in Win7 recovery mode but that does not fix things.
