I am having Opensuse 11.0. Recently I upgraded my system including kernel. Now I am unable to login in X as user. However I can login as root and working perfectly. I can login as user in failsafe as well as after pressing ctrl-alt-f1 when login screen appears.I have tried following---1. Emptied /temp folder and 2. deleting and adding user.

When i am adding a user using "useradd -d /home/test test" or "useradd test", it is now creating the home directory, whereas when i am using the graphical mode and going through several menu options, i am getting the home directory.

I just installed opensuse 11.1 with only the standard user account, not root account. Therefore, my question is regarding this ... is safe running linux with no root account? Should I create a root account for adminstrative purposes? If so, how can I do that?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've had this issue since OpenSUSE 10.5 and Firefox 2.x. Now I'm on OpenSUSE 11.2 and Firefox 3.5.6. Here's the issue: I log into various sites to get my bank statements, utility bills, etc. They are all in PDF, and they open up acrobat reader and from there I save the bill as a permanent record. The first one I open opens fine. Subsequent sessions with subsequent providers (banks, whatever) opens up a new window as if to show me the PDF, but no PDF is there. Status on the window shows "done." No error messages. I have to shut firefox down, restart, log in again, and then it downloads fine. It's getting annoying.

Accidently ran rm -rf while the pwd was /home/user-name
Now I'm unable to run any command whatsoever as root, ls,vi,cnf whatever, they don't work.
However the commands work as normal user.
I can guess that the files with root ownership in the home folder were deleted but I would like to revert everything back to normal and would like to know how to solve this problem.
I'm running a java app when my specific user (not root) login. It's running fine.The problem is that profile.local are calling my app twice ... The first call, it's blocking Linux environment until I close java app. After that, occurs the second call, then it's free Linux for usage.I tried to change my java app for gedit, and I can see the problem too.I tried with profile.local and /home/<my user>/.profile, the result is the same.

However I noticed, also, that you can perfectly use them even with Windows Vista. What I'd like to know is if you can use them even with Suse/Novell and (why not?) OpenSuse Linux.

how to install a D-Link Access Point on Suse 11.0 or steer me toward documentation that will do that? I configured the device on XP following instruction from this forum and the AP configured perfectly.The AP is plugged directly into the network port on the computer. It *should* function correctly without a router. I tried a restart and Suse has no idea it's there. The computer is currently configured for a wired connection which needs to be changed. The computer itself is going to be used as a small home storage server.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've pre-partitioned my HDD and want to install 11.2 on the second primary partition.However, when using the installer, I can't get Suse to install on the prepared 20gb partition - it keeps insisting it wants to install on the large unallocated section of the drive.
I find the partitioner somewhat hard to use and the answer may be staring me in the face but I can't see it.
I tried to use different version of Python, and followed the Readme like this

View 2 Replies View RelatedNew Suse 11.3 installation with Gnome desktop. Added K3B using Yast2, and after completing the install of K3B, there is no icon for K3B! Instead there is an "X" and the text for K3B in it.From the main menu -> more applications -> multimedia, is where the K3B icon is.Yast2 is supposed to install any dependencies needed or warn if it can not find any missing dependencies. What is missing, or is it a permission problem? All the other application icons seem fine.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just bought a PC with SUSE 10.1-0. The first time I started the PC an installation menu appeared. I didn't define a user name, thinking that it should log in automatically (as in Windows occurs), but now I can't go farther from the Welcome screen, due to the system is asking me de user and password, but I didn't introduce nothing! Leaving username and password in blank didn't solve the matter.
I can see the admin screen (pressing F10) but I am not able to find any user to log (logically) and I can't include new users from there.
I have also tried to install Windows XP modifying the BIOS but the system returns a message (once in the WinXP installation program) about an error called 4096, about the file i386halaacpi.dll, which is unable to find (something about the HAL), so I am afraid that my (new) RAM memory is damaged.
What could I do? The system is for an old person, so I would like to install finally WinXP and delete Suse.
The software use to work well here, but now I got this when I try to run it

After my last upgrade from 10.? to 10? my users' (kids) were unable to login. I tried to fix it and could not find anything wrong. Now I have upgraded to 11.? and the problem persists. The users could still login by selecting an older version at the prompt during boot up.
I deleted there account and reinstall the user and still they could not login. I added a completely new test user and could not log that one in either. The system excepts the password, waits a several seconds, then the mouse curser changes to the spinning circle. The hard drive lights flash for many seconds then eventually the hard drive stops flashing. I have let it sit a long time and it never continues. Tonight I came home tried to login and it is doing the same thing to me tonight. I ran fix packages, fix grub and everything else I could think of and could not log in.
Finally I logged in to the oldest version on there and it let me in.? The screens are all the same but the desk top is entirely different? I have never seen one like this. I think its like the new version of fire fox, with every thing moved around. Icons down the side. Menu's hidden at the top? I can probably get used to that but I need to able to login, and my user's to login?
After upgrading FEdora 13, user ravi was added. Then after few days neel was added. Both of the users were already existing. So when attempting login to neel, we found that every file is owned by ravi. So we did$chown -R neel:neel But after that problem started and when we rebooted the machin, there were no list of users on login screen. (then I connected to that comp remotely, it worked, but somehow I was not able to switch to root) It says incorrect password (though I new it very well). So I went to maintenance mode and changed the root password, and rebooted. Still problem persists.Now I am not able to login as root (from anywhere, login screen , terminal, remote)No list of usernames on login screen ( but i can choose, other and type login-password)

I am unable to login as normal user. I am sure that my password is correct. What are the possible reasons behind this and also the solutions. My /etc/password and /etc/shadow files are good and my login haven't set to /etc/nologin.

If I'm getting good at anything with Fedora, it would be making mistakes. I have Fedora 12 installed and it was running fine until I attempted to set the path in bashrc and cshrc for jdk. Now I am unable to login using the only user account I created at install. When I enter my password the login screens goes blank then my mouse pointer appears with the circling dashed loading symbol for a few secs and then brings me back to the login screen asking for my password again.
