I created an account using the following command:#useradd -g developers john and successfully changed the user password with:#passwd johnThe user is unable to login using the New Password using SSH. As a root I can login (#su - john) with no problem.

I have Fedora 12 installed and it was running fine until I attempted to set the path in bashrc and cshrc for jdk. Now I am unable to login using the only user account I created at install. When I enter my password the login screens goes blank then my mouse pointer appears with the circling dashed loading symbol for a few secs and then brings me back to the login screen asking for my password again.

When I am logged in as a user and I need to do something that requires root privileges the little password window comes up and I enter the root password. My question is how long are the root privileges granted for?I noticed that a few minutes after finishing checking out the firewall configuration tool and closing the window that I was still able to re-enter the fire wall tool and other administrative tools. How do I log out of the root privileges without logging out and then back into my account?

However, I am unable to ftp a user account on a EC2 instance of fc12.I do not know what commands were given to fc12 to create an AMI that uses a private key instead of a password.As root administrator I like it. However, I am trying to set up users in such a way that Windows users using "My Network Places" can access my EC2 instance of fc12. I have created accounts for my users and set a password for each of them (useradd). The problem is that I am unable to ftp the fc12 server with the user name and password. The error message the client gets when it tries to do so says there is no supported authentication method available. I presume I must somehow change server security or something to allow access to users with passwords but I do not know how to do this.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI recently made a computer for someone who decided to get a new one instead.. so i thought i'd make a server out of it lk i had it before. so i deleted their account (while on their account) and made me an account.. but now when i try to login to my account it's.. not there? such as when i type my username and pass it says i entered an invalid user/pass. any idea how i can get my user accounts back or atleast logon to this system? i know the root password if there's any way i can login under the root account.

I'm going to use this script to help identify who the user on a computer and while I know that's possible that a sometime-user may have a larger account than the normal-user on any given computer, the results of a script should be sufficient in most cases for my needs.I'm not sure the best way to around this. I know that can use "du -m -d1 /Users" as root:

After upgrading FEdora 13, user ravi was added. Then after few days neel was added. Both of the users were already existing. So when attempting login to neel, we found that every file is owned by ravi. So we did$chown -R neel:neel But after that problem started and when we rebooted the machin, there were no list of users on login screen. (then I connected to that comp remotely, it worked, but somehow I was not able to switch to root) It says incorrect password (though I new it very well). So I went to maintenance mode and changed the root password, and rebooted. Still problem persists.Now I am not able to login as root (from anywhere, login screen , terminal, remote)No list of usernames on login screen ( but i can choose, other and type login-password)

i m not able to create new user account to my new install of 11.2 don't know whether it occured due to update problem or some installation failure. when creation a new profile through yast it gives a warning sub-domain not started and quits however a new user get added through cli but with no profile of its own. that user cant log into gui enviroment and when he/she logs through cli it automatically tranfers it profile to "/"(i.e root) i m using kde4.3

So, I just installed a VM with OpenSuse 11.2 and joined it to my AD W2k3 domain. After correcting the clock problems, everything is running fine except a strange feature that I was not able to solve.After a reboot, I'm not able to login with a domain account. I enter the username/password, choose the domain then it the input fields become grey for 1-2 seconds then the password field is reset and nothing happens.The most strange part comes when you logon with the local root account. You login as root, then logoff and login with any domain account : works like a charm..

Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared).Why is this happening?Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis may sound a bit odd, but after installing Ubuntu Server 9.10 64-bit version, I can't seem to log in with the root account that I created. My user account works fine. I thought that I may have fat fingered the password when I created it so I ran the installer again since it takes very little time to do so. When creating the new root account password, I was very careful to type it correctly. After the install was complete, I am still unable to use the root account. I'm unable to SU from my normal user account, too. I just receive the Login incorrect error. Is there something with using root accounts with Ubuntu server that I'm missing?

I do have ufw set up and blocking incoming connections. Do you guys know what might be at the root of this?Also, when I used sudo from the user account (which I shouldn't have been able to do), I provided the password for my admin account.

Also when highlighting text on a page and right clicking with the mouse no search option is given. I created a new user and all works as it should for the new user. View 3 Replies View RelatedI just tried to change a user account by changing its name, password, and home directory. But first I had created a new account with the new name, pass, home directory. I tried to log into the new account but got a dead account. Nothing came up, and it didn't allow anything, complaining about "can't create Nautilus," and other such error messages.
Tried to go into the Constantine login screen and put in "root" and the original password. "Invalid Use..." Tried "root" with the new pass. "Invalid..." So what can I do at this point to get in and create a nice, clean, new account (with admin privs) for the new user?!
When logging in to my user account in Fedora 12 i686 i received an error message "Could not update ICEauthority file". The file in question is in /home/janne/.
I can get into the system but several programs do not respond.
Our requirement is to create multiple user account with UID:-

samsir
like this 100 user names in /tmp/users.txt file

like this 100 UID's in /tmp/UID.txt file
The script should take input from both the files and create user account. for example user account rohit should have an UID of 2001 and user samsir should have an UID of 1000134.
After my last upgrade from 10.? to 10? my users' (kids) were unable to login. I tried to fix it and could not find anything wrong. Now I have upgraded to 11.? and the problem persists. The users could still login by selecting an older version at the prompt during boot up.
I deleted there account and reinstall the user and still they could not login. I added a completely new test user and could not log that one in either. The system excepts the password, waits a several seconds, then the mouse curser changes to the spinning circle. The hard drive lights flash for many seconds then eventually the hard drive stops flashing. I have let it sit a long time and it never continues. Tonight I came home tried to login and it is doing the same thing to me tonight. I ran fix packages, fix grub and everything else I could think of and could not log in.
Finally I logged in to the oldest version on there and it let me in.? The screens are all the same but the desk top is entirely different? I have never seen one like this. I think its like the new version of fire fox, with every thing moved around. Icons down the side. Menu's hidden at the top? I can probably get used to that but I need to able to login, and my user's to login?
I am trying to integrate my centos machine with active directory [Windows Server 2008] using Kerberos and LDAP. I can now successfully SSH to my linux machine as an active directory user. Then it automatically creates home directory for that particular user using the PAM module.
My problem is that i cannot login to GDM using the same active directory account. Should I do some configuration changes for GDM login to take place using an active directory account.?
