Fedora :: Unable To Login As Root Or Any Other User?
Jul 6, 2010After upgrading FEdora 13, user ravi was added. Then after few days neel was added. Both of the users were already existing. So when attempting login to neel, we found that every file is owned by ravi. So we did$chown -R neel:neel But after that problem started and when we rebooted the machin, there were no list of users on login screen. (then I connected to that comp remotely, it worked, but somehow I was not able to switch to root) It says incorrect password (though I new it very well). So I went to maintenance mode and changed the root password, and rebooted. Still problem persists.Now I am not able to login as root (from anywhere, login screen , terminal, remote)No list of usernames on login screen ( but i can choose, other and type login-password)

Dec 2, 2010i just installed linux mandriva 2009. i set password for root and created a user account. when i try to login as root, after logging out as user, it does not allow me and gives the error "root logins are not allowed". even it does not show the root account. if i try to go to root from konsole terminal using su root, it allows to enter as a root but when i try to start the GUI with startx it gives error.not sure what to do and why i can't see my account in GUI mode

Debian Installation :: Unable To Login As Specific User - Machine Not Accepting Root Password
Jul 31, 2014Having installed Debian 7 on an old machine from a Liinux Format Magazine DVD I was unable to log in as a specific user. I can login as root and use useradd etc but when I logout of root I still cannot login as a user and nor will the machine accept my root password. I have to shutdown and reboot to get back into root. I'm using O'Reilly's Linux Pocket Guide from 2004 for the commands. Could it be that things have changed?

General :: Unable To Login As Root While To Use The Su Command?
Apr 3, 2011I have a Linux machine which I set up for my personal use at home. I installed Fedora Core 11 a long time ago, and recently I noticed that I am not able to log in as root (I didn't realize this issue until recently since I always have been logging in as a user account that I created during the FC11 installation).When I login as a user account instead of root, I can use the su command with the password I set up for the root account. Even when I'm in GUI mode and try to make changes to the system from the user account, the GUI asks to enter the root password, and I type the password I set for root and it works. However, if I boot the machine and try to log in the system as root, password that I set up is rejected.
I'm very puzzled with this problem because with my limited knowledge on Linux system, I thought the root password and the su password are the same (i.e. when you install Linux OS, you set the root password, and you use the same password for using the su command). I do not know exactly when this problem started, but the only thing that I can think of as a cause of this issue is that I once changed the root password from GUI using System > Administration > Root password since the system one time complained about the low security strength of the root password.

May 6, 2011I need to edit the system time as a not-root user. I am carrying out the following actions in my program.
1. Read the User Id of the process. User_ID= getuid()
2. Printing Capabilities(Permitted, Efffective, Inheritable)of the process
3. Setting UID = 0, using setuid(0)
4. Calling the prctl(), function to keep capabilities
5.Switching the UID from root to User_ID of the process
6. What we have now is a process with root capabilities as a non root user
7. On printing Permitted, Effective, Inheritable capabilities, I get the following
--> Permitted = 0xfffffeff = Effective
Inheritable = 0x0; with UID = 1001;
8. I then try and set the system time with --> system("date -s 10:00");
9. I get an error: date: cannot set date: Operation not permitted
10. I am unable to understand as to why I cannot set the time even thought the capability bit CAP_SYS_TIME in the Permitted and Effective sets are SET.

Jun 17, 2011Well I did something pretty stupid and now I can't log in with my user other than the root user. Basically, I wanted to change my username and so I when to the admin > user & accounts - and selected the account I wanted to change. Anyway I did that and then logged out. Since then all I get when I reseted is a spinning mouse ball and a black screen. I can get into the shell prompt - but I'm not sure how I'd go about fixing this issue I created. At the moment I'm logged in the shell with root, and if I type 'id' I can see my old username, but I think the links behind it are broken.

May 21, 2009I created a new user lets call it X. I disallowed the root login from SSH, so I login with X and after I call "#su root" command. But when I login that way, I can't use some commands like "service". I can access all the files, I can even change the sshd_config file but some commands say "not found". Do I need to get X to a group? Or make it some priveledges etc? What should I have to do to run this free of problems?

Dec 18, 2009I've recently upgraded my hardware. Now, the system boots perfectly fine, but I can't login to the tty as root or any other user. Infact yes, I can login, but as soon as it shows Last Login, it exits and then I'm back to a login prompt. I've successfully booted into single user mode, and changed all the passwords, but still it fails. X doesn't start, although I think it's due to the old xorg.conf having the wrong driver.
