Not able to login to a user account, even after clearing the password from root using passwd -d

we know that /etc/passwd - is a replica of /etc/passwd file and acts as a backup in any damage done to /etc/passwd file..i have observed a strange thing in RHEL 5.4....for example... if /etc/passwd has 100 accounts.. then /etc/passwd - is having only 99 accounts....when i add 101 useraccount with "useradd" then /etc/passwd has 101 accounts and /etc/passwd is having the 100th account of /etc/passwd - ..when i delete /etc/passwd and recover it with /etc/passwd - from runlevel 1 the lastly created user is not having his account after recovery.. what is the solution? this is same case even with /etc/shadow and /etc/shadow -

View 2 Replies View RelatedHaving installed Debian 7 on an old machine from a Liinux Format Magazine DVD I was unable to log in as a specific user. I can login as root and use useradd etc but when I logout of root I still cannot login as a user and nor will the machine accept my root password. I have to shutdown and reboot to get back into root. I'm using O'Reilly's Linux Pocket Guide from 2004 for the commands. Could it be that things have changed?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI started to work on building a ftp by vsftpd in our lab (that's only for our lab members). I am going to setup some the virtual users for each of the member. We have a CentOS5 (without upgrade after the fresh installation). I try several ways to setup the vsftpd for virtual users. 1) with db4 2) with mysql 3) without database and use htpasswd. But all fails. Actually, I don't want to use database, so I am going to find out the reason of failure on 'htpasswd' method
My vsftpd is installed in /etc/vsftpd (for only using ftp account, it is no problem to login).
1) I setup an account called vftpuser and build the corresponding home (/home/vftpuser), and then I setup another account call usera and also create a directory within /home/vftpuser.
2) I use htpasswd to add passwd to usera and store the passwd in /etc/vsftpd/passwd.
3) I added the name of usera to /etc/vsftpd/user_list
4) I create a directory /etc/vsftpd/user to store a unique conf for each user (for usera, the conf named usera) which contains the local root for users, which is

Is there a way to login to an account with only the root password? Because I really need it the first unlock the computer next to me and second because I just want to know.

I have just installed a gust debian 8 on debian 8 host in virtualbox, and when i wonted too login as su/root on the host there where no login possible, is there a way to regain the root password for the host?
I recently made a computer for someone who decided to get a new one instead.. so i thought i'd make a server out of it lk i had it before. so i deleted their account (while on their account) and made me an account.. but now when i try to login to my account it's.. not there? such as when i type my username and pass it says i entered an invalid user/pass. any idea how i can get my user accounts back or atleast logon to this system? i know the root password if there's any way i can login under the root account.

I have Fedora 12 installed and it was running fine until I attempted to set the path in bashrc and cshrc for jdk. Now I am unable to login using the only user account I created at install. When I enter my password the login screens goes blank then my mouse pointer appears with the circling dashed loading symbol for a few secs and then brings me back to the login screen asking for my password again.

View 13 Replies View RelatedThis may sound a bit odd, but after installing Ubuntu Server 9.10 64-bit version, I can't seem to log in with the root account that I created. My user account works fine. I thought that I may have fat fingered the password when I created it so I ran the installer again since it takes very little time to do so. When creating the new root account password, I was very careful to type it correctly. After the install was complete, I am still unable to use the root account. I'm unable to SU from my normal user account, too. I just receive the Login incorrect error. Is there something with using root accounts with Ubuntu server that I'm missing?

Being logged in as root, renewed the pw of my user account (actually assigned the same as wes previously), got confirmation the the pw has been changed. Reloaded. Yet it keeps complaining that the pw is wrong.
I am an absolute Linux Beginner who is being required to do a bit of admin work because the boss just fired the old linux admin. So when attempting login to neel, we found that every file is owned by ravi. So we did$chown -R neel:neel But after that problem started and when we rebooted the machin, there were no list of users on login screen. (then I connected to that comp remotely, it worked, but somehow I was not able to switch to root) It says incorrect password (though I new it very well). So I went to maintenance mode and changed the root password, and rebooted.
