Red Hat / Fedora :: Permanently Uncheck "Keep Aligned"?

Dec 31, 2010

In Fedora 14, is there a setting in Configuration Editor that you can't uncheck, to uncheck Keep Aligned in right click desktop? Or, is there a piece of code that destroys that indelible check? When that box is unchecked, it's back on the next boot. It always messes up my desktop icons.

Fedora :: Keep Aligned Check Box - Clears After Reboot

Jan 3, 2010

I have Fedora 12 & GNOME. But, this actually is an issue with many Linux distro's and GNOME. If I set the Keep Aligned Check Box Off - the next reboot it is back too set on. (Right click empty area on GNOME Desktop). I have searched many forums and search engines, I must be doing my search wrong there must be others that have noticed this, And the posts I do find on it are sometimes pretty old, so it does not seem like a bug would be around so long. I saw some notes about Nautilus also but no answers. FYI In CentOS 5.4 & GNOME it works properly.

Programming :: Unable To Check / Uncheck Any Box

Apr 12, 2010

I'm messing with a JTree, I need one that has checkboxes to check/uncheck options, and (later) textboxes to edit options....but for now, the checkboxes don't wanna play. Here's the source:

package Habitat.EnvCtrl;
import java.awt.BorderLayout;import MailPopper.hlprs.CheckBoxNode;
import java.awt.Dimension;
import java.util.Vector;
import javax.swing.JDesktopPane;
import javax.swing.JInternalFrame;
import javax.swing.JScrollPane;
import javax.swing.JTree;
import javax.swing.tree.DefaultMutableTreeNode;
import javax.swing.tree.TreeNode; .....

The rtree builds (albeit I have a superfluous extra checkbox in there I don't know where it comes from...) but I cannot check/uncheck any boxes.

CentOS 5 :: PC / Desktop What Services To Stop And Uncheck?

Jul 29, 2009

Just installed 5.3/gnome.I am on pc/desktop with only wired internet connection via routerto dsl-modem. The OS sets-up the "eth0" automatically.For just this type of setup what services can I disable and uncheck ? In System>Admin.>Services I unchecked and disabled bluetooth,isdn,pcscd and sshd. Should I disable sendmail, avahi-daemon, portmap,rpcidmapd,rpcgssd and.apmd(no laptop)? Goal is to minimize unneeded services and improve security. The wiki article on securing CentOS did not cover this.Under System>Security Level Configuration I allow ftp,Mail(smtp), and WWW(HTTP). Is the ftp allowed ok for my pc/desktop?

Debian :: Can't Kill Desktop 'keep Aligned'?

May 31, 2011

OK, I admit I'm a little OCD about icon placement on the Desktop - I want to do it myself - so this is driving me a bit nuts.I have right-clicked to disable the option 'keep aligned'. I have made sure it is disabled in gconf-editor. BUT IT KEEPS COMING BACK!ince I don't mess a lot with my desktop, I'll notice it's reverted when I add something new, can't place it exactly where I want to and once again have to untick 'keep aligned'.It seems to be random so not quite sure what might be triggering it.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Uncheck Update Box In Software Manager / Enable This?

Jun 23, 2011

I've run in to a weird problem where i cant uncheck the "pre-released updates" box...I had recently checked it to get a glimpse at what kinds of updates would be available with the option checked so i tried it and updated my repository. The problem is now i cant uncheck it again or any of the options for that matter. Is there a way to reset the repository settings to default?

I also would like to know if kde keeps a history of installed packages..since i couldnt uncheck the box i went ahead and installed everything thinking it might let me uncheck it afterwards (stupid i know), but seeing as how im pretty newbie, i dont want to take the chances of some package breaking

the box im referring to can be found here code...

General :: Switch Man Formatting To Left-aligned?

I installed openSuSE 11.3. By default, man pages blocks are justified (block-aligned). Example:

WARNING Improper use of this command may seriously damage your system,so read this manual carefully to understand how to use it correctly and prevent yourself from destroying your system. Instead, I would like all manual pages would be displayed left-aligned, like this:

Code:

WARNING Improper use of this command may seriously damage your system, so read this manual carefully to understand how to use it correctly and prevent yourself from destroying your system.

I definitely would not like to reformat all the manual pages one-by-one. but rather just changing sometnihg in some macro-definition file or something similar? .. Is it possible achieve that simply and quickly?

Fedora :: How To Permanently Disable Selinux

Jul 14, 2009

I came across the following method of how to permanently disabling selinux and it's notifications. Although changing enforcement from the gui into permissive mode does most of the job, the notifications still pop-up when some applications are started.

So to disable it do the following:

open terminal as root and execute:

Quote:

And then change the SELINUX line to SELINUX=disabled

Quote:

This is it. Now reboot the system and selinux will never bother you again.

If you are not a Fedora user and you are using this forum just because we are cooler here then you will not find the /etc/selinux/config as in the fedora releases. What you need to do is to edit the kernel boot line and add selinux=0 at the end:

Quote:

Reboot the system

Fedora :: Permanently Enabling Repos ?

Feb 4, 2010

I have various repos in my yum.repos.d including rawhide, google, and various others which I can enable on specific yum commands with --enablerepo=reponame.

Question is, how come these aren't enabled by default? When I do a yum repolist they don't show up, which effectively leaves orphan programs.

I can see why you might not want rawhide enabled by default for obvious update reasons, but I might want others to be enabled by default, like google for one.

So how is the default repo anabling/disabling controlled?

OpenSUSE Install :: Uncheck Show_desktop Mouse Pointer Changes To Moving Circle?

Nov 28, 2009

I am creating an openSUSE 11.2 Kiosk image. I have everything pretty much locked down but when I go into the gconf-editor under /apps/nautilius/preferences/show_desktop and uncheck the check box my mouse pointer changes to the circle icon that looks like it moves in a circle. Sortta like the busy or what it does during boot. Hard to describe by typing it out but if you make that change you'll see what I am talking about. I had this setup like this in previous versions of openSUSE so I am not sure what it is doing or what else I need to do to make the mouse pointer just the arrow like normally. I don't want the users to be able to right-click on the desktops to get a menu nor add icons so unchecking the show_desktop has served my needs.

Ubuntu One :: Uncheck The Sync Option In Nautilus, The Loader Next To It Spins Endlessly?

I have been having some issues with Ubuntu One. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick. For some reason, Nautilus tells me that Ubuntu's default Videos folder (there is data in this folder) is synced on Ubuntu One when it is not. I have checked on the Ubuntu One website, and the site says the Videos folder is not synced (Ubuntu One's website does not show the Videos folder under "my synced folders"). When I attempt to uncheck the sync option in Nautilus, the loader next to it spins endlessly, or Nautilus gives me an error that it can not sync the folder.

Ubuntu Installation :: Create Aligned Partitions With Fdisk On EBS?

Jul 17, 2010

After reading Markus Ewald blogpost on http:[url]...n-ssd-on-linux about Aligning an SSD on Linux I decided to give it a try.I have bought two 80 GB Intel X25-M SSD for my home server. The plan is to install Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit server and use the SSDs as system discs and vmware data storage using software raid for redundancy.After reading the blog post I am not sure how to make all my partitions aligned and set up on EBS (Erase Boundary Size)I am planning for four partitions:Boot, size 1GB

Root, size 25GB
Swap, size 4GB
Data storage for vmware server, size 40GB

According to Markus Ewald I should use 32 heads and 32 sectors.Using the live CD, I started using fdisk -S 32 -H 32 /dev/sda.Fdisk can create partitions using cylinders or sectors, and now I ran into trouble.

First partition /boot must start on cylinder 2 (or sector 1024). Size is 1 GB and the following partition should be aligned and start on a new EBS block. How do I do this with fdisk?Should the next partition start on a new cylinder? Otherwise, after formatting, fdisk gives a warning that the partition is not aligned to the cylinder size? The overall question is how to format four aligned partitions which all are aligned with Intels X25-M EBS. EBS for Intel X25-M is either 128KB or 512KB (Have not found a confirmed value yet)

Fedora Hardware :: Get Rid Of Nouveau Driver (permanently)?

Feb 17, 2010

I am running F12. With prior kernels - 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.i686 or before - I could simply rename the nouveau.ko driver to nouiveau.ko.bad. Then the kernel would load the nv driver instead, and everything worked great. FWIW: adding rdblacklist="nouveau" to the kernel params in grub.conf didn't seem to do anything.

On a recent update, a new kernel was added: 2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.i686. I did the same rename trick as before, but this time the kernel still loaded the nouveau driver, and then X failed to load. So I had to fall back to the older kernel.

Is there a way to keep nouveau from loading with the newest kernel (ie, the one above)? And also, is there a way to keep nouveau from loading for any new kernels?
