View 1 Replies View RelatedI am a newbie and I am compiling a kernel in order to reduce the bootup time. I have a question as follows.
I am trying to remove a module. I used rmmod and modprobe. I can remove the module, but it is loaded again after reboot. How can I remove a module permanently? The module that I am trying to remove is lp.
I got this problem where my USB ports don't work. So if I do the command:
modprobe -r ehci_hcd
it fixes it. I can put it in the /etc/rc.local so that it runs every time when the server reboots. But, I want the ehci module removed without ever being loaded because sometimes the server goes through an fsck and the module is loaded and therefore I cannot use my IPMI to access the server.
I believe that my kernel has it within it because blacklisting the module does not work. I've tried remaking the initrd with this:
add module to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
mkinitrd -f /boot/initrd-$(uname-r).img $(uname -r)
and that didn't work. I've searched on how to do it but nothing is really clear. I would like to know what the command would be to do this. I use Fedora 8.
I would like the ehci_hcd module to not be loaded so that if the server goes through an fsck, the module is still not loaded.
How do I erase my hard disk of "Deleted Files"?I mean how do I make "Deleted Files"-----> "Non Recoverable"?
View 3 Replies View RelatedThere is a folder in my home titled 'gtk-3.0,' which continues to reappear even after I have deleted it. The reappearance of the folder seems to occur after using lxappearance to change the themes. I will not be participating in the headaches of the switch from gtk2 to gtk3, just as I did not participate in the headaches of the switch from KDE 3 to 4. So the following are my questions;1. Is it possible to permanently delete the gtk-3.0 folder so that it can not ever reappear in my home? (And why is it appearing there anyway? Shouldn't it be hidden with a dot?)2. If I can not prevent this folder from appearing in my home, is there a setting I can use in Wheezy to block gtk3 libs and apps from installation? Presently, the only gtk3 lib or app shown by aptitude search is libcanberra-gtk3-0, but I can't remove it due to notification-daemon dependencies.3. If I switch from all gtk2 apps to all KDE apps will that solve the problem of gtk3 placing a completely unnecessary folder in my home?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed freeswitch app from opensuse 11.2 repositories. App got broken during the process/setup.., I have removed it (yast) ignoring some of it's dependencies, also I have removed folder /opt/freeswitch manually. In Yast it shows that app is still installed.. when trying to remove it, there is an error, force remove also out puts an error. "whereis" command shows no file, I was also trying to force install it one more time but it fails. Is there a was to delete it permanently?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed a distro based on CentOS 5.5 (FreePBX distro FYI). It used an automated kickstart script to create an md RAID1 array of all the hard drives connected to the machine. Well, I installed from a thumb drive, which the script in interpreted as a hard drive and thus included in the array. So, I ended up with three md arrays (boot, swap, data) that included the thumb drive. Even better, it used the thumb drive for grub boot so I couldn't start up without it. I was able to mark the USB drive as 'failed' and remove from each array, and even change grub around to boot without the usb drive, but now each of the arrays is marked as degraded:

View 6 Replies View RelatedIn my system i am using fedora13 unfortunately grub loader(partition deleted) file has gone ,now its not booting the system, some one is saying is install again fedora in same place
what i am thinking is:
1)we will use live cd,
2)open terminal(in live command will work or not ,i typed but its asking you should be root)
3)we will take grub source code from net ,then we will compile it in same path(i think in fedora grub.8.gz),
then is it working
I created a pendrive USB Fedora OS, worked fine. Installed a few bits and pieces, but when I used it again most of the files have disappeared (corrupt, deleted?). This happened before, just after I put a load of updates on. I am certain it cannot be rescued, but how can I prevent this (apart from backing up)?

how I store above mentioned variables in PATH permanently.
I used the ext3 format when I formatted my partition prior to installing Ubuntu10.10. I had accidentally deleted a file and began the process to get it back. It wasn't critical but helpful to recover the file. To make a long story short I ran into to some unexpected road blocks. I tried to use PhotoRec to get the job done but with no success.
I'm just looking down the road in the event I might have to recover something important. If it would be better going back to the Fat32 file system I would rather do it sooner than later. Just as a side note I am dual booting between linux and windows.
On a KDE4 environment after downloading some music from rapidshare with JDownloader the archives self-extracted with the symbol in some of the file names. Those files couldn't be renamed or deleted, the file manager said that the files didn't exist - very weird. The files should have had some swedish characters in their file names. Now I'm stuck with those files on my machine. Anyone knows how to get rid of them?

I use the show-leaves yum plugin, and sometimes I use that info to remove some unnecessary packages. But that list can be long, so I write them on a text file.
1) Instead of removing packages one by one is there a way to remove all packages written in that text file?
2) Why isn't the output of the show-leaves plugin compatible with the output of "package-cleanup --leaves"?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to copy a large number of files from a Linux server to a Windows file share. Unfortunately, all of the files and folders I have to copy have 10 numbers followed by 2 colons "::" in the name (example: 1234567890::WordDoc.doc) which of course is invalid in windows naming conventions. So now I'm trying to come up with a way to change the file and folder names on the fly to replace the colons with a dash "-" or space " ". I'm even willing delete the frist 12 characters in necessary. I have tried cp, mv, tr, and several -bash scripts but get no positive results.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI need to do some text file manipulation which I think should be done with standard commands in BASH. I'm looking at comma seperated text files (stock market data). It comes in the form of date, stock code, open, high, low, close, volume. What I need to do first is move all data with same stock code sequentially into individual files.
While doing this since the stock code will now be the file name I need to remove the stock code. Next I need to filter out overlapping data from different files with the same date. ie. where two files contain the same date on the one line only one line will be added to the combined file. I think there must be a tutorial out there for basic text manipulation like this, I just haven't found it yet.
Is there a way to undelete a just-deleted file in JFS? I can't seem to find any information on it. I'd have sworn I did this before but didn't save the steps.
View 1 Replies View RelatedA friend had a 320 gig hdd he wanted me to back up. I saved all the files in a folder "Documents & Settings" and even made a 7z archive out of it. I used a 1tb mybook and copied the files to it then tried to delete it. Now i had recovered the files using ubuntu, but moved them to my windows partition. When i got on windows 7 and tried to delete the directory "documents & settings" i got an error saying some files had names that were too large or something like that. So i went on ubuntu and deleted the files from my windows partition without moving them to the ubuntu partition.
Well my 1tb drive just broke so i lost the files on there. Now im trying to back the files up using ubuntu. I am running scalpel at the moment, and it hasnt found anything at all. I really dont know if i set up the configuration file right. I just started scanning my other hdd that contains the linux boot. It has just started so i am not sure if it will find anything or not.
But incase it doesnt, how do i set up the config file to find the file? There are two things i deleted off of my windows partition. a 7z file archive which was the 9GB directory "Documents and Settings" zipped, and the actual folder Documents and Settings.
