Red Hat / Fedora :: Install Freeze Action ?
Jan 15, 2009
I have seperatly tried to install Federa, Ubuntu and Mandriva on a second SATA drive and all three installations freeze at the beginning with a black screen. I tried the Ubuntu text installer and was successfull but was only able to boot into it once because it froze everytime after that. I unplugged my WindowsXP SATA drive throughout.

Fedora 11 (64 bit) installation on a clean system hangs at various points. The farthest it's gotten is just over half of the 1035 packages tagged for installation (cd 2 of 6 was the last prompted). At that point, the screen goes black except for a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. Keyboard is dead (e.g. cap/num lock is unresponsive).
Other attempts have stalled at other spots, such as creating the file system - system became unresponsive, no mouse movement, etc.; or installing brasero-libs when it simply stopped installing, mouse/keybd were OK, CD would not respond or eject.
These situations persist when using basic video mode, along with acpi=off and ide=nodma. Below is a description of the hardware in use.
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Kentsfield Q6700 2.66 GHz
RAM: 4 GB
HDD: 300 GB Seagate IDE ST3300831A as master, single cabled with CD-ROM as slave connected to the sole IDE motherboard port
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS

We (2 persons) are experiencing a total freeze on first boot after installing fc10 from the 6 CD distro set, and yes, we used the same discs but ran the validate check on each. One machine is a rather ancient Acer G7500G which had previously been running FC3 happily; the other is a very new Dell Notebook (now running FC9 happily). The freeze occurs after the progress bar turns all white. Pressing escape shows that the volume group(s) have been found and are now "active", but that's all she wrote.
The systems can be mounted in repair mode and I notice that there is no "functions" file in /etc/rc.d/init.d but this may be normal for FC10.
The Del owner have officially given up, but before I throw FC10 out and go to 9 also, I though the question was worth asking: has anyone installed FC10 from the CD distro as opposed to the DVD distro successfully?

Title says it all really. I can move the mouse around but can't select stuff by tapping the pad. I have synaptics installed which works in Arch and Slackware. Not in F12 though.

Today I noticed my sdl modem flashing away when I had no internet access programs active as far as I was aware. I did a 'ps ax' to see what was running. I saw nothing that warranted internet access. I didn't recognize the gvfsd-computer process and tried finding documentation about it on my system. I began to feel uncomfortable when I couldn't find anything showing what it was. Finally, I killed the process and the internet access immediately stopped. Research on the net showed that gvfsd-computer is a file browser. I find this very disturbing. Why was a file browser accessing my disk drive (the light was flashing) and why was it accessing the internet without my requesting such an action?

Since a week or two I am having the problem that one of my harddisks (a Samsung HD103UJ) goes offline during heavy workloads. The workload is a series of MPI jobs that run for about half an hour each for six hours. The MPI jobs use all 4 processors on my quad-core system and access 8 1GB files read-only and 8 1GB files read/write heavily.
When the problem occurs the xfs filesystem is no longer accessible, and when I reboot the BIOS does not even detect the disk, I have to shutdown and restart the system. The problem is not easy to reproduce: most of the time the batch of jobs finishes, sometimes not with the above eror.
/var/log/messages shows the error
ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen
smartd and Samsung hdd diagnostics do not show any errors. Also

Whenever I do sudo apt-get or use the Ubuntu Software Center, I can't download anything because a message comes up saying "Action requires installation of untrusted packages: The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." I've been trying to download GIMP and Thunderbird, so... I dunno what the problem is.

I'm trying to perform a network install of OpenSUSE 11.2 on a Shuttle SN25P.
The machine has 2 hard disks installed with Windows 7 on one. I am trying to install OpenSUSE on the other.
The installation runs through as normal but the system freezes on the reboot, just after the message "Setting up service (localfs) network"
The screen goes blank apart from a solid cursor in the top left corner and the keyboard is totally non responsive
I have tried a few reinstalls but they all do the same
The Windows partition still boots OK from the Grub menu
I can't find any similar symptoms via a web search.

I have read lots about KDE (4.xx) freeze on OpenSuse 11.3 Live. Well I have experienced it first hand.
My hard disk which had Opensuse 11.3 (reiserfs) crashed. It was a dual boot and a windows upgrade wiped out the partition information. I am still trying to resuce with dd-rescue.
Now in the meanwhile I burnt a opensuse 11.3 Live CD and worked on it for a week. I was bit annoyed that every too often the cd drive spins....so I decided to burn a usb stick. Its a 2 gb USB stick. I followed the instructions to the toto to burn the ISO image. Then my nightmares started
The USB STICK boot was smooth. However when the desktop starts ...the trouble begins. I clicked on firefox...after about 10 seconds I experienced the dreaded freeze first. I had to reboot the system.
Everything was fine till i started Firefox, the system froze. Now reboot -> start -> firefox --> freeze cycle continued. I got fed up.
I then downloaded google-chrome. Installed it (after updating a couple of drivers) . It worked flawless. I loaded it with graphics...still no problem. Then started firefox .. the system froze. I even disabled all KDE windows animation, set only one window pane, still there is a freeze.
I took my USB stick off and rebooted the system though live CD. I started firefox on boot, NO problems. Opened many many tabs. Still no problem.
So there is a SURE problem with USB + Firefox. I SUSPECT IT MORE DUE TO NETWORK ISSUES THAN GUI (DRIVER) ISSUE. If it were to be GUI driver issue firefox should have fozen both with CD and USB.
Mine is pentium duo processor machine with 2gb RAM (DDR2). Intel chipset for video. I checked the MD5 of downloaded ISO its matched the one on the site. So the iso image is flawless.
All the threads in this regard suspect the video drivers, but I ALSO suspect the network. May be there is a wait() state in the network driver that is holding the process for way too long causing the freeze. Somebody needs to check this up.
The freeze is on USB stick boot only and not on CD boot.

I installed OpenSUSE 11.1 on a friends computer after having a lot of trouble from ubuntu, and because I use it. It was working great when she got it home, but it locked up randomly and wouldn't unfreeze so she turned it off and when she rebooted She got an error about there not being a file system present and that she needed to run a mount command, which didn't work. After that, now it just says that there is no files system present and you ge tthe basic prompt. I had her run a live cd and run Gpartd and check and repair the partitions, but it did nothing.

I am a convert to OpenSUSE having recently ditched Windows. I really like the latest version of OpenSUSE but keep experiencing this annoying system freeze every 20 minutes or so. I get absolutely no response from the keyboard, although I do have the mouse working. However the end result is ALWAYS a cold boot
I am running SUSE on a spare machine as follows:
DELL Optiplex GX270 standard machine with integrated peripheral devices etc. Chipsets are all up to date and the hard drive is performing without fault. 1.25 Gb Ram

There is an intermittent problem with resuming from s2ram. Occasionally, the power button is pressed to resume, the screensaver comes on but the animation is frozen along with the mouse and KB. Sometimes the desktop will show although with the same frozen condition. My swap parition is 2GB. I read in the forums that a small swap partition may cause a somewhat similar condition. I also read a recommendation to disable powersaving and screensaver, again not for my exact symptoms. I would like to find the root cause even if it takes some doing. Otherwise, the system rocks (except Amarok never worked but Kaffeine works for sound). Here are the system specs:
openSUSE 11.3 x86_64
KDE 4.4.4. rel 3
HP xw9400 Workstation AMD 64 Opteron
OCZ Vertex 60GB (dedicated system drive-single boot)

Today I tried to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10. It got through probably 50% of the install and then everything froze. I had to hard restart the computer, but when I try to boot to ubuntu, it just gives me a prompt and acts as if everything is wrong. I have tried a few things (sudo dpkg -configure -a; sudo dpkg -reconfigure; etc..) but it all seems to lead back to the prompt with no success. Is there anyway to recover my upgrade? Do I have to resort to a reinstall of ubuntu and lose all my data?

I have tried several different distros - but none seems to work. The pc is a HP mini 1000 with 16 Gb flashdisk, 1 Gb ram, American keyboard. It had an Win Xp installed when it was bought. Later it worked with an Ubuntu. My older son, who owned the pc before me, will not give me his password. He wanted me to install a fresh, new Linux.
I have now tried to install Ubuntu, Knoppix, PcLinux, Mandriva, Feodora and a few more, using the universal usb installer. Ubuntu, Slacks and Mandriva works fine from the usb-key. But when I try to install to the minis flashdisk, it freezes.
Ubuntu stops during the install process just after I have selected the keybord (I have tried default English and Danish).
Mandriva lets me format the flashdisk, but freezes with white screen just before the install is finished. There after Mandriva can start booting from the minis flashdisk, but it stops for a long time showing the startup screen. After very long time I get a terminal screen asking for login name and password. (I guess Mandriva wants the password from my sons Linux installation).

I have just installed Slackware 13.37. After the install - when executing startx for the first time, the xfce desktop freezes when its almost (?) fully loaded.
While loading I can move mouse and if I hit caps_lock the lamp at the keyboard turns on and off.
In the setup I choosed to use vesa - allthoug I afterr that even tried to boot from lilo into vga-mode.
I am, a litle rusty after have been brainwashed through Ubuntu for a few years (sigh) - so I really am not sure which config-file I should edit, and xorg.conf seems to be empty.

On a fresh install 11.3 gnome I am getting an update freeze on the kernel-desktop-2.6.34.7-0.5.1. This is on the initial software update after first log in on fresh system. It downloads the package and freezes during the update and causes all my other updates to reload. I went to init 3 and ran zypper update and saw that it made it to 91% and then stopped. After that I usually get a corrupted install.

I have a Tecra A7 with Intel 945GM. /boot is in a Ext4 partition and the rest is LVM2 splitten in 3 (/: Ext4, /home: Ext4 and swap). There is also a windows partition in the disk: I have installed openSUSE 11.4 (clean but keeping my /home directory untouched why is there since my openSUSE 11.2 installation). I have the following questions:
1.- During the installation I tried to shrink the windows partition and grow the LVM2 . The installer said that the partition was in use and could not be modified. I thought that during the installation the parititions where not mounted. Why is this? How can I grow now the physical volume (not the logical ones)?
2.- Solving this problem I realized that there a lot of duplicate files in .kde and .kde4. Can some of these be deleted?
3.- At boot, the computer frequently freezes after GRUB. Is right after selecting an option in GRUB, so it might be at mounting. In the failsafe configuration, it happens less frequently. How can I diagnose what is really going on?
4.- Every time I navigate into a webpage which contains a login form, Chrome ask me to unlock kdewallet. It is extremely annoying because this happens with all webpages, not just the ones in which I am registered.

I have failed to install kUbuntu for a several days already, so I am currently on SuSE (hate it, love ubuntu...). I don't know what is wrong with my PC, but something ain't right. I tried:1st: Installing kUbuntu x64 - Result: Freeze on loading screen (I think..don't even remember anymore ).2nd: Running Live CD ("Try Kubuntu") - Freeze on splash screen, at the Hard Disc icon (can't get past that one).3rd: Installing Ubuntu x64 with Unetbootin - (GNOME variant). - I get a nice graphic card error, can't unerstand anything - screen messed up.4th: Installing Ubuntu x86 with Unetbootin (GNOME) - same as 3rd time.5th: Decided that maybe something was wrong with the download. Downloaded kUbuntu via torrent. Installed with Unetbootin in a flash - no change.6th: Installed SuSE7th: Downloaded kUbuntu x86, burnt, tried installing, back to 1st step.Is this an infinite loop ?Hardware specs:

Im trying to install Ubuntu, here are my problems and the solutions ive tried: I've downloaded 10.10 in 64 bit and 32 bit. I've also tried with 10.4.1 LTS.I've tried burning it to a disc and i've tried making a bootable USB. (I ran out of dvds so im only trying from usb now).I load from the disc/USB and ill get the menu asking if i want to try ubuntu, install ubuntu, check for errors etc..... I choose try ubuntu and ill get the UBUNTU logo with the loading dots undernieth. The screen then glitches and theres multicolor lines frozen accross the monitor. Stuck that way until i restart. This also happens when i try to install it to the harddrive. It happens on both versions in both 64 and 32 bit. I checked the disc and all files are present.I've had ubuntu installed over a year ago.

Ubuntu 9.04, all updates
Latest firmware, etc
abit SG-95 motherboard
2 GB Ultra DDR2
Intel Celeron 360 cpu
PNY GeForce 9500 GT video
Started 2 weeks ago, random and total freeze of system (video, keyboard, mouse).
Nothing useful in th log, other than it occurs at the same time syslogd restart show up in the log.
I don't even know where to begin, or how to troubleshoot the issue if nothing shows up in the log... could use some help, please.
Problem occurs with or without the nvidia drivers installed. Ubuntu or windows, same thing..connected or not connected to the internet
I've ran every memory test I can find, with no issues reported. HD seems OK. No other symptom that I can find, other than it croaking, usually when I'm in the middle of a broadcast or recording.
Is the only machine I have for now, I need to figure out what's wrong and replace it as quickly as possible, so I can get back to work.
