So I messed up a little and didn't leave enough room on my disk. I want to shrink my home directory and move it to the end of the drive. Is this possible? It's ext4 but no an LVM partition though.
View 1 RepliesAs I regularly move between Mac and PC, I thought it would be a good idea to put all my data on an external drive. As Windows 7 and OS X have similar home folder layouts, I just simply put all the folders I need for both on the root of the external drive and changed a few settings so that the Home folder for my user is on the external drive on both Windows and OS X.
Whilst Ubuntu also has a similar structure, I cannot work out how to have it so that my users home folder is on the external drive. I have done a little research and all I can find is how to have the /home directory on another partition. a) this is not what I'm trying to do, just the folder for my user and b) this would mean formatting the external drive to extX format, which just wouldn't work for me.
I am using 9.10 (or will be once the upgrade is complete)

Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit/ and /storage are on two different partitions. I want to move my home directory to the /storage partition, so I went to System -> Administration -> Users and Groups then Advanced Settings then the Advanced tab. I changed Home Directory from /home/billy to /storage/home/billy. I click on ok and I'm asked if I want to copy all the user's files over to the new location or start fresh. I click, Copy Files. It acts like it's doing something, but all it does is create the home/billy directories inside /storage, but it never copies files over and the next time I go to /home/billy it's still in the old location. What the heck is the deal?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm sure that this is posted somewhere but I have not been able to find the right search terms. I have a Dell Vostro 1700 which has 2 physical hard drives. I installed Natty to the 1st drive and during the install I used the entire 2nd drive as /home. I would like to upgrade the 2nd drive to a larger faster drive. I have the new drive in a USB enclosure so that I can access both drives. I'm pretty sure I need to boot from the CD to do this. Then I need to copy all files unmount the small drive then shut down, install the larger drive and have the system recognize it as /home. I am just starting to creep out of N00B stage and don't want to screw this up.

i was trying to move xampp's root directory from /opt/lampp/htdocs to /home/private/htdocs (in order to use Ubuntu One) but when i restarted apache i got "permission denied" when i tried to load the index page.so i said to my self...hey..let's chmod

Method of automatic backup from my hard drive to a usb drive when plugged in.
Basically I'll be constantly putting files in /home/downloads and I want it so when I plug in a NTFS usb drive it will automatically Cut(not copy) all the contents of that folder including other folders to my usb drive. Is there any well known programs that can do this?
I would prefer something that is in the repositories that is easily configurable via command line rather than some complicated script.
I am getting ready to upgrade from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9,04 (I am a bit behind, I know). I just drag my home folder to a USB drive to back up and it should copy all the files (including hidden ones).
When I tried this, I get the error that Symbolic links cannot be created. Should I worry about this? Would this effect my backup in some fashion?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge.
The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg
cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home
export HOME=~/testing/home
cd ~
screen -S testing-home
# start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc.
# test revisions
However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about?
I have a dual boot windows XP/OpenSuse 11.3 system running from a hard drive. They are both 32 bit in spite of the fact that the system can run 64 bit.
I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit (the wife insists, not yet a Linux possibility) and OpenSuse 11.4 64 bit, but having the programme files on an SSD for faster loading, with my data files on the existing hard drive.
I'm happy with the notion of getting the SSD going as a dual boot system. With Windows, as I understand it, it can tell it fairly easily where to look for the "my documents" folder on the hard drive.
However, the Home directory in Linux is not quite the same. How (if it's possible) could I run the SSD but use my existing Home directory on the hard drive?
i have installed fedora 14 with so many libraries ,development tools installed on my pc but i usually have to present some projects which can run on my system .........and can't be executed or compiled due to absence of libraries and tools there so, i there some way to so that i can use this current installation on my hard drive of my pc to some external media like external hard disk and plug and use that installation anywhere on any system..

Now the problem is that I have 2 hard drives and the way that I have Samba set up it is sharing my home directory which is wonderful but my windows computers do not have access to the second hard drive. I search for several hours this morning trying to figure out how to do this but cannot figure it out.

However, upon completing the copy and trying a new disk it wouldn't read it at all other than recognizing it's there in places, the desktop, and with a startup window.But nothing will play it, making it very frustrating since it had worked prior to completing the burn. Background: I had an existing 10.10 install and 10.04 on another partition. When I installed the 10.04 I told it to use the existing /home partition which is also being used by the 10.10 install. All good, both users have directories with all their data in the same /home partition.
Issue: So, as the 10.04 was 32bit (experimenting but another story) I decided I would replace with 10.04 64bit. All went well except when I did the manual partitioning I screwed up and instead of setting the existing /home partition to 'use but don't format' - which I think is what I must have done last time - I left it as 'don't use and don't format'. So, obviously, now the new 10.04 install has its /home inside /, which I don't want. I want it on the existing /home partition as it was with the previous 10.04 install.
Question(s): Is there any simple(ish) way of doing this without a reinstall? Not a major problem as I have only just installed and can do it again without losing anything but time, but I would like to figure out a way to do it without if possible.I want to essentially move the /home/user directory (rather than the /home) and make it /media/home/user inside the existing partition. Seems easy enough on the surface but becomes involved as I investigate.Ubuntu 10.04 minimal install with Xfce DE.
I have just spent dome time using gparted to sort out my partitions. I have a vista partition, a fedora one and a big chunk of unallocated space I wish to use as my data drive.
I want to move my ~ folder to the new partition and have windows/vista access the folder and write to the Documents, Downloads folders etc.
What is the best format to use?
Also I plan to start backing up my partitions to a server, for instance using g4l to save a linux image (maby a windose one too). Is there any benifit in keeping all the hidden files (ones starting with period '.') i.e moving the whole ~ folder or would I be best off leaving the ~ dir and moving the folders I know i use such as ~/Downloads, ~/Documents etc?
And how should i preform the move of all these files? 'mv'? do i need to add any special options?
Is it possible to move the boot and OS drive to another controller and still boot machine?
I moved the boot drive sdb1 to a different controller and I can figure out how to make the machine boot from it.
I changed the bios and get a brief boot indication, I then editted menu.lst in the grub folder and pointed it to the new device but still the machine won't boot.
Is there something I need to do, other than reinstall?
I came from the Debian world so I did not do much building software from source. I successfully built wine from source, now the wine binary is in the same directory where the Makefile and all of the other source stuff is. What all do I have to move into the new directory to get wine working in the new directory? By convention, where should I move wine, I want it available for all users, should I move it to /opt/wine, or /usr/local/wine, or somewhere else?
Am I able to move Music folder to a different hard drive without moving my whole /home or do I just make a folder there and call it Music and change all the programs that use the music's default music folder?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI use ext4 for the lvm2 home partition on Fedora 11. Yesterday, I must shrink my home partition and the operation crashed. Then a new ext4 partition becomes a backup "cp -R /mnt/backup/* /home" + chown + chgrp and boot Fedora again.
The login failed and the message of Fedora is "Cannot enter home directory. Using /."
What is the problem?
