General :: How To Search Man Pages

May 5, 2010

I wanted to know how to search man-pages. For example, i wanted to check BIND FUNCTION FOR SOCKET. When i type man bind, a page about bash related information is displayed. I have realised i should be searching for bind(2). but man bind(2) gives gives syntax error. i am using Fedora 12.

Fedora :: Apache Not Parsing Php Pages / Trying To Run Php Script In Browser Its Not Opening Php Pages?

Feb 19, 2010

I have a Cent OS 5.4 32 bit final installed in my dedicated server.

I used to run lighttpd with php in my server until now and all was fine. But yesterday I changed my website which needs apache to run. So installed apache using yum install httpd command.

Then I added the virtual host name of my domain in webmin panel but when i try to run my php script in browser then its not opening php pages.

Instead it downloads php files like index.php when i open in browser. So I guess apache is not able to compile and run php pages. Only html pages are opening right now..

Fedora Installation :: Apt-get Search Wget Saying Invalid Operation Search?

Apr 5, 2011

i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?

i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...

All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.

Fedora :: How To Mount Entire HDD

Oct 29, 2010

I have a hdd with several partitions.
sda1 - Fedora
sda2 - windows xp
sda3 - win 7
sda4 - ubuntu

I know how to mount each partition, but what I want is to mount sda, not sda1 or sda3. Just sda.So later, I want to make a copy of MBR of sda.As I know first 512 bytes from sda1 are not the same like first 512 bytes from sda.Thats why I want to mount sda and with dd, copy the first 512 bytes. The problem is how to mount sda, if some partition are ntfs and other are ext3?

Fedora Installation :: New F14 Has Taken The Entire Disc Almost?

Dec 28, 2010

I recently installed Fedora 14 on an old computer which was already a dual boot Windows XP/Ubuntu machine. As there weren't many problems I felt encouraged to install it on a newer dual boot (Windows 7/Ubuntu 10.10) machine. Apart from a lot of bother with the wiFi card, all appeared to be well. However, I decided to boot into Ubuntu to make sure that it worked as before and was disagreeably surprised to get a message saying that Ubuntu only had 12.5 Mb disc space left when previously it was installed on an 80 Gb hard drive.

I have had a look at the drive, using gparted and found that there are two ext4 file systems, one on /dev/sdb1 and one on /dev/sdb3 which have used 2.93 Gb and 500 mb respectively. /dev/sdb4 has an exclamation mark (!) beside it and is lvm2 and occupies 68.15 Gb and appears to be unused.

Would it be possible to shrink this lvm2 file system and expand the one that contains Ubuntu. If so, how can I identify where Ubuntu is located? there is also /dev/sdb2 which is an extended partition of 2.93 Gb as well as /dev/sdb5 which is a Linux swap of 2.93 Gb

Fedora :: Entire HDD Erased At The Beginning Of Installation?

Mar 3, 2010

I just tried installing Fedora 12 and at the beggining of the install i got this message about my disk which cannot be read until it is initialized, and if i initialize it all data on the disk will be lost. Disk was formated using GUID, and had one HFS+ partition on it. I accidentaly clicked "yes" on that error message, and after realising what I just did (some 2sec later) i pulled out my computer's power cord out.

Now my entire disk is erased, it has no partitions on it, and all data is lost...

How do i retrieve my data from the erased disk, and why did Fedora want to do this to my disk?

Fedora Installation :: F13 Install Consumed Entire HD?

May 28, 2010

I had no problems installing the F13 DVD, but when I chose to install it across a 160 GB and 250 GB hard drives, it happily used both of them for the system and left me 40 GB of storage to play with.... at least I think that is what happened. I kind of had the opposite in mind. I know I could have installed it on one and used the other drive for a separate storage location, but for me, it's just easier to have one big storage/system volume and not have to worry about paths and /dev/sdb/images stuff

Fedora :: 12 - Freezing - Entire Machine Locks Up - Unable To Do Anything

May 31, 2010

I experienced freeze with Fedora 12. I haven't had any issues up until now at all with stability in Fedora. Since then the problem has persisted with a freeze about once a week and then over the last few days it has started freezing daily. I thought at first that it was a problem with an update and that it would get sorted out with another update but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I installed FC12 within days of it's release and I've had no issues until now.

The odd thing is that the machine only freezes when I'm not using it. I suppose this is a good thing, but it makes it harder to figure out what is causing it.

The entire machine locks up and I'm unable to do anything but use the reset button and get the machine going again. I can not connect via SSH either as all network connections are being refused.

I have looked through the logs and can not find anything odd. There are no kernel panics and there are no Xorg errors.

I'm starting to wonder if this is a hardware issue, but the system drive was just installed in November and hasn't reported any errors when I check it.

Fedora :: Command Line FTP - Transferring Entire Directory?

Jun 10, 2010

Need explanation from a FTP guide's reference of FTP's GLOB command.
mget and mput are not meant to transfer entire directory subtrees of files. That can be done by transferring a tar(1) archive of the subtree (in binary mode). Then FTP does not transfer, even with mput, a directory of files to remote server?
Does this quote suggest I can tar my files, upload them, then untar them on the remote server?

Fedora :: Bugs In Client Computer Abort Entire Experiment

Feb 17, 2010

I set up an NFS server on my home computer, all very simple add a line to /etc/exports, run exportfs -a, all worked well and as expected. Through no fault with Fedora, bugs in the client computer made me abort the entire experiment. (long story that you don't want to know) Undo all the config, reboot. However I'm now left with an issue that's not earth shattering. Every time I reboot my computer a /Public directory is created in my home directory, this is obviously a legacy from the original NFS setup. I've trawled through log files, looked at config files in /var/lib/nfs, but can find nothing that might be generating this /Public directory at boot time.

Security :: Encrypt Entire File System - Fedora 11 64bit?

Jul 11, 2009

I recently installed Fedora 11 64bit and I am curious about encrypting my entire file system for security purposes. I've been on Google for a while now and I keep finding info on how to encrypt a specific folder or home directories but nothing on the entire file system (or I'm missing something big here). It's hard for me to imagine that it isn't. If so, do I need to encrypt the partition my file system is on before installing it? What software should I use? There seems to be so many, it's difficult to keep them all straight.

Fedora Networking :: 25kbps Torrent Seems To Occupy Entire 5.5mbps Bandwidth

Jun 19, 2009

I'm using Fedora 9 (64 bit).At the moment, I'm trying to download Fedora 11 using a bit torrent, which is reportedly connected at an average of about 25kbps.The only problem is that whilst the download is active, I can hardly even surf the net properly, even though my current isp connection speed is 5.5mbps.There don't appear to be any background processes running that would utilise any of the bandwidth, and as soon as I pause the torrent the problem disappears.I'm dual booting with Vista, and I don't seem to get the same problem under that OS, so I'm guessing it's something to do with my network settings in Fedora.

Server :: Web Server Sees The Pages But Not The Folder That Has All The Images For The Pages

May 14, 2010

I'm very new to Linux, and I have ran a Windows XP server before, with a Apache2 Server software for Windows. and didn't have any problems with it, but I really want to set this server up with Linux.

The server is running, but the only thing that comes up in the browser, is the html pages, the pages call all the images from a folder /images/ but for some reason I can't get it to pull the folder up. None of the graphics show on any of the pages.

I also have a VirtualHost setup, and have another website set up in the DocumentRoot with the 2nd site, but it won't come up ether, even tho it is listed as the 2nd VirtualHost, and have that folder set up as the DocumentRoot.

I'm just using IP Addresses for now till I get this all sorted out.So if I enter the IP the main page comes up, just no graphics. if I enter the IP Address/2ndSiteFolder/ I get a directory listing with the 2nd site folder listed, so now if I click on the 2ndSiteFolderName, it comes up as IP/2ndSiteFolder/2ndSiteFolder/ Now the 2nd site comes up, and so does all the Graphics for that site, even if I go to some of the other subfolders site. So its just weird. I don't know what I need to do to get this to work right.

I know it has to do with setting up the folders for VirtualHost, I just don't know what it is. I have been working on this for a week, and I'm not getting anywhere..

Fedora Installation :: F10 To F12 Upgrade - PHP Pages Not Working

Nov 23, 2009

I just completed upgrading from F10 to F12. I had a few problems but now everything works just perfect, except my Apache server does'nt execute the PHP pages on the web-server. The php-pages use to work just fine. I have Apache/2.2.13 (Unix), with PHP 5.3.0 (cli) (built: Nov 17 2009 19:19:17). I tried to remove alle PHP rpm-packages and install them again with no luck.

I have checked the httpd.conf file and it include the following lines:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php5
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .php
and
LoadModule php5_module modules/libphp5.so
I get a msg. from the last line, that the php5 module is already loaded.

I have restarted httpd-service. I have the following php modules installed:
php-devel-5.3.0-7.fc12.i686
php-cli-5.3.0-7.fc12.i686
php-common-5.3.0-7.fc12.i686
php-5.3.0-7.fc12.i686
php-pdo-5.3.0-7.fc12.i686
php-mysql-5.3.0-7.fc12.i686
Seems that in the new versions of PHP/Apache with F12 you need to write:
<?php .....?> and not just <? ... ?>

Fedora :: Batch Reorder PDF Pages (via Pdftex)

I wanted to see if anyone had a quick batch script to take a pdf document as input and reorder the pages to produce another pdf via command-line invocation. My case is simple as I only need to remove the last page of the document and append it to the front (though more complicated situations may arise). If possible, I'd prefer to use `pdftex` due to its flexibility and widespread distribution, though other packages that are part of the Fedora Core distribution may also work. I have only superficial knowledge of latex scripting.
