Jan 25, 2009I get a blank white screen when i try to bootup fedora and ubuntu to install them. I don't know whats wrong, any ideas?

Fedora Installation :: White Screen On Boot Of F 10
Jan 7, 2009I have a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 and 4GB RAM. The MoBo does not have embedded video. My main video card is a Diamond Radeon HD3650 PCIe. I was unable to initially install F 10 as the screen would blank out (Black Screen) after it would start Anaconda. I attempted to boot using the suggested option of nomodeset with no change of symptoms. I then switched out to an older PCI video card (NVIDIA GeForce FX5200) and was able to go through the install. Now I am attempting to switch back to my preferred card (HD3650) and just before the GDM screen appears the screen goes to solid white and no ability to switch to another VT. I have been unsuccessful at finding any workarounds for this. I thought the issues were with the older proprietary chipsets pre open source of ATI which was supposedly older than the R500 series, but I guess I'm wrong.

I'm having the same problem I had with ubuntu, I get a white screen when trying to load the graphical install after the media test. On ubuntu this was solved by selecting simple graphics mode. Here I have tried the following commands during install with still no luck
The text install just freezes after selecting the keyboard layout so that does not even work. Tried searching for forums but only solutions I could find where the previous.

Apr 16, 2009I've been trying to install Fedora 10 Core to a new my machine. The live CD appears to boot, but once I get beyond the selection stage (installing or running Fedora from the disk first), I invariably get a fully white screen. Nothing I've tried to do changes this. Although I'm reasonably experienced with the command line, I've never tried to do a GUI-less install of a full OS, and am unsure how/if to begin with Fedora. Any suggestions for either fixing the white screen of death, and/or installing from the command line would be a big help.

when trying to choose the Linux partition, I found that it would just hang at a blank screen. Looking further into the problem, I had booted with the Linux Rescue and checked the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. It appeared to be that the menu was set to hidden. I got rid of that line, and checked the boot arguments. It still had acpi=off set with the kernel and everything else seems to be in order. Root is set to root (hd0,2) which should be correct.

Nov 7, 2009I get past the count down. The bars run across the top. Then my lcd monitor announces it has no signal and goes to sleep. Had this problem with earlier versions of Ubuntu, particularly 8.04. Was fixed in 8.10.

Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 Motherboard with 2GB ram
Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA Hard Drive
Samsung 22X CD/DVD Burner IDE
I would like to be able to run Fedora 10 (and Vortexbox, an application to burn and store CD�s) but have been unsuccessful in getting F10 to load. I am a novice Linux/Fedora user. I've been able to load and run Windows XP on the server with no problem. I have downloaded and verified both the x86_64 DVD and the x86_64 Live CD from the Fedora website. With the live CD, the last thing that appears before the screen goes blank and the install freezes is the blue line changing to white. I have tried several different SATA configurations , have turned off all non essential options in BIOS(ethernet, USB support), and have tried loading with fail safe bios settings.

When I boot with the Live CD, after selecting "boot" in the Fedora boot selection menu, I get a grey screen with a white cursor, and the system freezes. I checked the Live CD on my laptop and it worked perfectly.

Nov 29, 2009Although I managed fairly quickly to get 3D enabled on the GF 7600GS of my desktop, it took me longer to get 3D up on the GF 9650M GT of my Asus laptop M70Vn. Although I made extensive use of the numerous procedures outlined here, none of them worked and booting my laptop always ended up with me facing a jet-black screen and a completely inexpressive blinking white cursor. My solution was simple: I did not blacklist Nouveau and problems mysteriously disappeared.

Jun 1, 2010After succesfully installing Ubuntu 10.4 x32 and rebooting pc hangs on black screen with a flashing white dot in the top left corner of my screen, i've tried installing it twice with the same results.
my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

Nov 13, 2010when trying to startup Ubuntu 10.04 the screen goes blank and says no signal. But there are three Ubuntu's to chose from. the middle one will boot-up and works all right. But for when it is starting up the screen flashes and comes back on. the top one doesn't work at all screen goes blank but the lights on tower stay on.
the bottom one starts to boot but when it gets to the screen for your id and pass. it goes all blank but for a white line on the right side of the screen. this is on an old e-machine with a dual boot windows xp home. currently with 1g of ram and a 160gb hard drive split in two. with an AMD processor and ATI graphics on board. cant remember the numbers after that come after Ubuntu on the grub it is listed three times. how do you remove the other. let me know if you need more info.

What do? ubuntu 8 worked fine, i ran an update to 10 and it did the same thing. i figured i would try debian since i have it on my other 2 computers. this is being installed on a desktop with a radeon 9800 graphics card. i know the card is the problem because of a driver issue (as i've read) but how do i get it.

Jan 29, 2009I wanted to try F10 today so I downloaded the Fedora 10 64 Bit LiveCD but for some reason after it's done loading (the three colored loading bar), it hangs on a white screen with no sign of my computer thinking (no HDD LED activity and no CD ROM activity indicators flashing). Any clue how I could test the LiveCD without having to install Fedora (with text or otherwise..)? For the record, I have a 4870 1GB graphics card. I'm assuming that's fully supported, right?

Feb 23, 2010I recently downloaded Ubuntu 9.1 and burned it to a CD. However, I can't seem to get it to boot. I got to the main menu and selected to run it directly from CD, and the Ubuntu symbol showed up saying it was loading things, but then the screen went black and nothing happened even if I waited over 15 minutes. During this time the HDD light was flashing every second or two, and I could see about three white pixels at the top most row of the screen.

Jun 20, 2010I 've recently installed UNR 10.04 Lucid Lynx in my old PC.
Specs:
CPU Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz
Mother ASRock P4i45GV R5.0
Chipset Intel 845GV w/ Intel Extreme Graphics (shared memory up to 64 / 256 MB -I don't really get which one-).
Nevertheless, when I start the Pc, Ubuntu loads and, when it's about to load the desktop, the screen turns black with white stripes and "turns itself on and off" (like when it receives no image). I don't really know if this is or not a graphic bug / problem, but it's quite strange, as I've used Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.10 before in that same Pc.
By the way, I get the same error with the normal Ubuntu Lucid. AND, I have a Win XP Professional SP2 installed (I've installed the Ubuntu afterwards, so I have the Grub as default bootloader).
Also, I get the same error when loading Ubuntu in LiveCD mode.

Dec 15, 2010I have been running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid not on a separate disc partition but installed right on my Windows (7) partition. Everything was working fine until yesterday. I restarted my computer and then the system was scanning the disc then suddenly after the disc check, the computer restarted and when it was supposed to launch Ubuntu, the screen went completely white. I tried restarting again, I manage to get to where I choose to boot with Windows 7 or Ubuntu. I choose Ubuntu and the same happens again: white screen. It doesn't go any further than this and the only thing the computer can do is boot with Windows 7. Has anyone had the same problem? Also, is there a way I can access my files (saved in Ubunutu) from Windows? If I can manage to copy these files then I don't mind reformatting the whole disc.

Installation went fine but when I boot in Ubuntu I get a MS-DOS like workspace that asks for my login and password. When I give it my credentials,it just says welcome in text and thats it. Now if I go into recovery mode and choose any of the options [normal boot/failsafe-graphics boot] the screen goes completely white. I spent hours searching Google for a solution but nothing worked. what is the problem and also what will be the solution for it.

Oct 17, 2010I'm running Fedora 13 (64-bit) on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with integrated Intel graphics (lspci reports it as: 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)), and am having a strange problem with watching iPlayer in fullscreen.The video will work fine in the web browser at default size, and most times even in fullscreen as well, but sometimes on switching it to fullscreen the entire screen goes white with only the cursor visible. The sound keeps on playing and the cursor responds to mouse movements but I haven't been able to do anything to fix the screen (I tried bringing up a terminal and logging out, as well as doing a "compiz --replace" but neither had any visible effect - obviously I may have typed them wrong since the screen was white, but I tried multiple times). As mentioned above, I am using Compiz desktop effects, and also had to check the "Unredirect Fullscreen Windows" box in CCSM to get iPlayer to play video in fullscreen in the first place.
The annoying thing is that I haven't been able to consistently reproduce the error, in that sometimes it takes multiple attempts of going fullscreen and/or videos for it to occur. However, it has been pretty consistent in that it has only taken a couple of different videos to be played for it to happen (oddly I don't think I've had it happen on the first fullscreen attempt of the first video yet, but that might not mean anything).

May 31, 2011On attempting to load GNOME 3 with Gnome shell, the screen fades to white, stalls for a minute, then gives an error and asks to log out. "Classic Gnome with Compiz" has numerous graphical glitches such as the background not refreshing (think Windows 95), among other things. How can I get GNOME Shell working again?
Gnome shell and classic gnome load fine under other users.

- I installed 10.04 using the alternative install so I've been doing all this in safe mode
- I installed a newer kernel (2.6.33) and still black screen
- I tried to install an updated Intel xorg driver, but I kept getting dependency errors (xorg, x11, something else)
I read another thread on this forum from a user who is using the same platform (Intel HM55), and I got stuck at the last point (can't get Intel xorg driver to install).

This is what happens if i reboot my pc: i see grub then i start or select fedora12 booting i see for a moment some text then i see only a blackscreen and the bottom of the screen a blue horizontal line with the loading status for the fedora x server gnome. if the line is full, gnome apears.
I would like to have no splash screen and to see the console debug output

Jun 11, 2010So everything went fine in my installation of ubuntu 10.04 but when the pc was reset after installation, it goes to the black screen with the white writing and then does nothing. To check if there was a problem with the disk I had burnt, I installed an an older version of ubuntu (8.something) which had previously worked and the same thing happened: installation goes fine but then when I reset it goes to the black screen with white writing and does nothing. I then tried to install 10.04 again through usb with the same results. Do I need to change a BIOS setting?

Feb 27, 201110.10, and I am havingn interesting issue.During boot, right after POST and right before the bootloader screen with the progress bar and Ubuntu logo, my monitor goes completely white. However, almost instantaneously it starts to fade to black, and eventually goes away. I know it's not the white screen of death that I've heard about, because next I can log in and use my computer just fine.If anyone could point me in the right direction to try to fix this, I would greatly appreciate it. Even filenames related to Ubuntu boot would help, as I'm still learning.

Aug 16, 2009I install the fc11 from Fedora-11-i386-DVD.iso. The software update has just updated my fc11 kernel from 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686.PAE to 2.6.29.6-217.2.7.fc11.i686.PAE. If I boot using the new kernel, The screen resolution is not correct (everything gets bigger) and the screen goes into blank white screen suddenly after log in.
