Fedora :: Blank White Screen After Updating Kernel
Aug 16, 2009
I install the fc11 from Fedora-11-i386-DVD.iso. The software update has just updated my fc11 kernel from 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686.PAE to 2.6.29.6-217.2.7.fc11.i686.PAE. If I boot using the new kernel, The screen resolution is not correct (everything gets bigger) and the screen goes into blank white screen suddenly after log in.
I have a geforce 8600gt card and installed its driver (for pae kernel) as suggested on this link: [URL]Everything goes well untill I update the kernel.

when trying to choose the Linux partition, I found that it would just hang at a blank screen. Looking further into the problem, I had booted with the Linux Rescue and checked the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. It appeared to be that the menu was set to hidden. I got rid of that line, and checked the boot arguments. It still had acpi=off set with the kernel and everything else seems to be in order. Root is set to root (hd0,2) which should be correct.

Recently i had migrated from windows 7 to fedora 15. i have lot of flipbooks with me and unable to open those flipbooks in fedora. finding a suitable solution to open those flipbooks. is there a software to open these books linux. in windows there is no requirement for special softwares to open flipbook, since it is similar to flv or swf files. i had already tried with wine. with wine the file is opened but do not displays the contents or pages, show a blank white screen. @people who dont know about flipbooks: flipbooks are flash objects usually created from pdf files used for reading, flipbooks simulate the reallife book actions(page turning).

Ive recently built a music server with the following configuration:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 processor
Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 Motherboard with 2GB ram
Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA Hard Drive
Samsung 22X CD/DVD Burner IDE
I would like to be able to run Fedora 10 (and Vortexbox, an application to burn and store CDs) but have been unsuccessful in getting F10 to load. I am a novice Linux/Fedora user. I've been able to load and run Windows XP on the server with no problem. I have downloaded and verified both the x86_64 DVD and the x86_64 Live CD from the Fedora website. With the live CD, the last thing that appears before the screen goes blank and the install freezes is the blue line changing to white. I have tried several different SATA configurations , have turned off all non essential options in BIOS(ethernet, USB support), and have tried loading with fail safe bios settings.

I'm relatively new at Linux, and I am trying to get Nagios to work correctly. I'm running CentOS if that matters. I think I followed the directions here correctly, but all I get is a blank white screen after I login. The documentation page works fine, but I don't see anything on the main http://localhost/nagios page. I have looked at other solutions to this problem (adding the correct path to the open_basedir in /etc/php.ini) and that still did nothing. Any Way to decode my httpd logs... Any time I refresh, I get these four errors from /var/log/httpd/error_log:

So everything went fine in my installation of ubuntu 10.04 but when the pc was reset after installation, it goes to the black screen with the white writing and then does nothing. To check if there was a problem with the disk I had burnt, I installed an an older version of ubuntu (8.something) which had previously worked and the same thing happened: installation goes fine but then when I reset it goes to the black screen with white writing and does nothing. I then tried to install 10.04 again through usb with the same results. Do I need to change a BIOS setting?

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from 9.10. After the upgrade process, I restarted and chose "Ubuntu, with [the current kernel]" and now I am greeted with a white screen with no login or boot splash. My processor is pegged according to the processor case light. My computer's specs are as follows: AMD Athlon X2 5200+, ATI Radeon X1300 Pro, 2GB DDR2 ram, Dell Socket AM2 Motherboard, and 250 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I really need to get this computer to work.

Just installed Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit on my computer dual booting with 9.10 32bit. Was hoping to move to 64 bit to get full use out of my RAM and CPU. The issue is that when I tried to run Compiz-Fusion that I got from the Ubuntu software repos that came with 9.10 nothing would change. I tried to make a 4 desktop layout with a cube like I have on the 32 bit OS and nothing happens. So I right click on the Compiz icon and select the "reload windows manager" tap in the drop down menu and every time it turns to a blank screen of white with a mouse on it. I can move the mouse and I can even use some of the new settings I changed but I cant see anything else besides a mouse and the white screen. I feel as thou I am using a version of Compiz that is not compatible with 9.10 64 bit.

Just upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10 and I understand I'm not the only one having a problem with a blank screen after booting.Everything worked perfectly under 10.10; I had no complaints at all. I can use the new purple-backgrounded GRUB to boot into an older version of ubuntu, which is what I'm using at the moment to write this message.
The first time I booted into the upgraded version I got my background wallpaper but no other interface elements. I rebooted and now whenever ubuntu boots everything looks normal until I end up with a black screen and a white mouse pointer. As I move the pointer around it changes to a cursor so it is definitely interacting with the interface, I just can't see it. I can bring up terminal windows too.I have a Dell M65 w/ 4GB RAM. I suspect that the problem may be related to the NVIDIA video card; I'm using "version current" of the NVIDIA driver - might uninstalling this fix the problem?

The updater installed the kernel 2.6.32.21-166.fc12.i686. I can boot into runlevel 3. But if I then give the command startx, I almost get an x-window, I can see the top and bottom, ermm, wadjecallems, beams, but the screen is blank, and then the machine freezes. I can only switch off.

I installed ubuntu 10.10 alongside Win7 recently, absolutely new to this OS.
Experiencing problems with firefox browser. A plain White blank screen appears only with the titile bar named Firefox. Actually when the web-browser icon is clicked, just a cursor BAR appears stuck inside the extreme left end of the screen (cursor bar something like the one we find in word processors or this blinking line while I type this). I manually have to expand the bar in order to get the firefox browser, which is the plain white screen.
Initially had problems with the missing wireless firmware, reading through this forum I activated the Broadcom driver. But before that, I wired in my laptop to the router and then FIREFOX worked fine, after an update which installed bout 214 updates the firefox got conked.

this is my first time doing a custom partition, I tried to do it with only the assistance of reading as I go, but I don't believe I found enough information last night. What I am trying to do, is put openSUSE on 200gb out of 500gb space on my external hard drive, as well as on 50gb space out of 110gb on my internal hard drive. The remaining 60gb space on my internal drive is going to be for microsoft windows. The remaining 300gb space on my external drive will be storage space. It seems like what I want to do is achievable
What I want is to have my main openSUSE on the external drive (primary partition I think?), with the GRUB loader so that when the external drive is not plugged in, my little brother can use windows on my internal hard drive. I tried this last night, and when installation had finished, I rebooted my computer and the screen was just blank black with the flashing white line as if waiting for me to type, although it would not allow me to type when I tried. It would be great if someone could tell me the order in which to partition, including the terms primary partition, extended partition, and logical partition, as needed.. I don't want to permanently muck up this machine.

I had a debian installation with kernel 2.6.32 I had a set of instructions to apply a patch to kernel which I followed to the T. The grub now shows the Debian installation with the old kernel and the Debian installation with the patched kernel.
The trouble is the system goes blank after attempting to start gdm3.
I have tried running in recovery mode and then typing startx but it only shows a blank screen.
Code: lspci | grep -i display
00:02.1 Display controller : Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02) If i boot with the old kernel, everything works fine. Is this an "X" window configuration issue. I tried X -configure but still nothing changed.

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

I wanted to try F10 today so I downloaded the Fedora 10 64 Bit LiveCD but for some reason after it's done loading (the three colored loading bar), it hangs on a white screen with no sign of my computer thinking (no HDD LED activity and no CD ROM activity indicators flashing). Any clue how I could test the LiveCD without having to install Fedora (with text or otherwise..)? For the record, I have a 4870 1GB graphics card. I'm assuming that's fully supported, right?

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 and 4GB RAM. The MoBo does not have embedded video. My main video card is a Diamond Radeon HD3650 PCIe. I was unable to initially install F 10 as the screen would blank out (Black Screen) after it would start Anaconda. I attempted to boot using the suggested option of nomodeset with no change of symptoms. I then switched out to an older PCI video card (NVIDIA GeForce FX5200) and was able to go through the install. Now I am attempting to switch back to my preferred card (HD3650) and just before the GDM screen appears the screen goes to solid white and no ability to switch to another VT. I have been unsuccessful at finding any workarounds for this. I thought the issues were with the older proprietary chipsets pre open source of ATI which was supposedly older than the R500 series, but I guess I'm wrong.

complete trying newbie trying to get to grips with linux. Tried ubuntu and didnt like that so someone suggested fedora. I'm having the same problem I had with ubuntu, I get a white screen when trying to load the graphical install after the media test. On ubuntu this was solved by selecting simple graphics mode. Here I have tried the following commands during install with still no luck
The text install just freezes after selecting the keyboard layout so that does not even work. Tried searching for forums but only solutions I could find where the previous.

I'm running Fedora 13 (64-bit) on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with integrated Intel graphics (lspci reports it as: 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)), and am having a strange problem with watching iPlayer in fullscreen. The video will work fine in the web browser at default size, and most times even in fullscreen as well, but sometimes on switching it to fullscreen the entire screen goes white with only the cursor visible. The sound keeps on playing and the cursor responds to mouse movements but I haven't been able to do anything to fix the screen (I tried bringing up a terminal and logging out, as well as doing a "compiz --replace" but neither had any visible effect - obviously I may have typed them wrong since the screen was white, but I tried multiple times). As mentioned above, I am using Compiz desktop effects, and also had to check the "Unredirect Fullscreen Windows" box in CCSM to get iPlayer to play video in fullscreen in the first place.
The annoying thing is that I haven't been able to consistently reproduce the error, in that sometimes it takes multiple attempts of going fullscreen and/or videos for it to occur. However, it has been pretty consistent in that it has only taken a couple of different videos to be played for it to happen (oddly I don't think I've had it happen on the first fullscreen attempt of the first video yet, but that might not mean anything).

On attempting to load GNOME 3 with Gnome shell, the screen fades to white, stalls for a minute, then gives an error and asks to log out. "Classic Gnome with Compiz" has numerous graphical glitches such as the background not refreshing (think Windows 95), among other things. How can I get GNOME Shell working again?
Gnome shell and classic gnome load fine under other users.
