View 1 Replies View RelatedHow-To set the mixer volume level at system startup or login. A funny story that led up to this how-to first...
I made the obvious mistake of leaving my volume level set to nearly maximum. Of course, Ubuntu's default behavior is to restore the mixer to its last known state - a point of much irritation at that moment. This had been a problem in the past as well, and today was the last straw. So, I did some research, for quite some time I might add, and decided to be a good community member and share my findings. It seems that there are all sorts of opinions around the web. The dominant opinion is that a mixer should always be restored to its last known state, that this is all well and good, and why would you ever want it to work any other way. Lots of people suggested that the startup sound be disabled, which was not a terrible solution, but was still a work-around as it means that the next sound bite to be played is the alarming one.
Needless to say, I wanted to find out what I would call the "proper" way to set the mixer level at startup. As my laptop uses PulseAudio, and my office desktop uses ALSA audio, the methods were different. My focus was for PulseAudio as that was the original purpose. I note here that my method for ALSA is less detailed as it is not the default for Ubuntu audio these days. So, if you are using ALSA, you might have to be a little creative to make my ALSA note fit your needs. I have attached 2 files to this post, one for ALSA and one for PulseAudio.
my Conky needed the Coretemp, and a friend of LQ told me to run modprobe, and it works greate! no every time I start my system, I need to run the modprobe to add the module to Kernel. How can I put the coretemp to start every startup? (I think there is somenthing to do with a file on the rc.module at /etc/rc.d/, but I'm afraid to do something stupid...) I want to make the conky running after start of the system. How can I do this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen opening gedit as a user I get the following message
Gkt-message: Failed to load module "'pk-gtk-module"
If I try to open gedit as root I get the same message but with other messages. These are shown in the attached file. gtk.txt
This is on an upgraded machine using the preupgrade method. The same has happened on two machines upgraded from F14 to F15 the same way. 64 bit systems.
How to clean this up so the messages do no appear?
When I try to load the Realtek 8187 modules to kernel using the ./wlan1up command, I get the following error:

Can someone tell me how to correct the "Invalid module format"? I hope that correcting the "Invalid module format" error, I will not have the "Unknown symbol in module" error.
Note: I am using wlan1 for this module as I previously am online with the wlan0 network. The same error occurs if I use ./wlan0up.
how to loads & unload module.why its important?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got an Acer 7736 and had quite a few issues with no sound after my install of 10.10. After quite a bit of fiddling I managed to get that sorted and I now how have sound. I believe I'm using alsa although pulse also does seem to be on here. The reason I say I believe I'm using alsa is that after startup, I have no sound on speakers unless I unmute it in alsamixer.
As I understand it alsa's supposed to save your settings on logout/shutdown/reboot but this doesn't appear to be the case, and I'm not able to find any asound.conf or the like in the places they're apparently supposed to be.
Just installed F11 and found out I cannot load an external security device in Firefox - the dialogue window does not work (Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Security Devices - Load, then the OK button does nothing!). This means you cannot use Firefox (i.e. cannot use F11 at all) if you need to log in through a web page or sign web transactions/documents using a smart card or any other crypto token.
I can't believe somebody released F11 with a browser that crippled! Moreover, this issue has been reported to Mozilla in April, but they did nothing until a second report in late May made them finally realize what they have done... and still Fedora team decided to go for it! Read here for details: [URL]
how to fix this, or may be an idea when F11 will update Firefox (Mozilla has provided a quick fix for the problem)? I don't want to wait until 3.5 final release, which may be months ahead -- and I certainly don't want to recompile the whole Mozilla stuff by myself -- neither I want to mess up with a downgrade of the browser, or a second installation of a 3.0 version with different prefix.
ALSA mixer resets my speaker volume to zero and changes my USB headset volume to a very low level. How can I get ALSA Mixer to remember my volume settings from last boot or if there's no other option, a way I can make it adjust the levels to a predetermined level automatically on startup. I'm using 10.10 with pulseaudio.
View 3 Replies View Relatedim trying to install the driver for my nvidia GeForce 7300 GS.i have Fedora 12 installed in an Intel duo core 2 processor 64 bits.kernel installed is 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64...i followed leigh's guide i did the 4 steps but after reboot screen goes blanck and X dont work.the log says:
-> Kernel module load error: insmod inserting './usr/src/nv/nvidia.ko'
-1 no such device
I've been unable to boot into x using the real-time kernel from CCRMA at home. I get the error "Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error,0) no drivers available. I'm using the driver from Nvidia. I know that this is not an official Fedora kernel and I should be bothering CCRMA about this, but in the mean time could I edit the entry in grub.conf so that it will use the Nouveau driver for that kernel only? That way I could "dual-boot", and just use the rt kernel when I want to use audio software and don't need 3d graphics.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI think I know quite well what my problem is. However, I'm still too much of a newbie to know how to solve it.My problem: I no longer get a login screen on my server after I ran a yum update which updated my kernel (thank god, vnc server still works).Cause: During startup Fedora complains that it can't load the module nvidia.ko. Reason: The module doesn't match the current kernel.
View 5 Replies View RelatedFor a diskfull node (the OS installed in a disk), I can use the 'insmod' command to insert a kernel module into the kernel. And after the reboot, the module is still in the kernel. I have a question here: how, when and which kernel module will be loaded in the boot up process for a diskfull node? And for the diskless node, can I use the chroot or some other ways to install the kernel modules into ramdisk, so that kernel module can work when the diskless node boot up? I think it needs certain mechanism to load the kernel like the boot up of diskfull node.

Anyone else having issues with the Atheros AR8132 and the atl1c module? I am on the 2.6.38.8-35.fc15.i686.PAE kernel, tried with a few others but it's flaky no matter which I choose.
Sometimes if I load/unload the atl1c module a few times the link will come up, but it seems the module is not even being loaded at boot and I have to modprobe it just to see the NIC.
fedora 12 with php 5.3.1 + apache is installed on the server
I needed a FFMPEG + MENCODER + FFMPEG-PHP setup , so I have installed all of the necessary libraries/codecs along with ffmpeg , mencoder and ffmpeg-php
I've added ffmpeg-php (ffmpeg.so) module to php.ini and restarted httpd
But ffmpeg was not showing up in phpinfo() so I grepped : php -i | grep ffmpeg
for some clues and got this warning
PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php/modules/ffmpeg.so' - /usr/lib/php/modules/ffmpeg.so: undefined symbol: php_gd_gdImageSetPixel in Unknown on line 0
That error explains why ffmpeg is not loading
Obviously something to do with GD library , so I've researched on the net , and found that some users suggest loading the GD module before FFMPEG module.
I gave it a try and added this at the end of php.ini:
Code: [gd]
;loading gd
extension=gd.so
[ffmpeg]
;loading ffmpeg
extension=ffmpeg.so ...but still same error when greping phpinfo()

i installed firefox 4 and removed the old 3.X version. did a general update that my computer showed me was available then i noticed the first problem. firefox 4 would not launch when i clicked it, it would only launch when i clicked the gnome 3 applications button and then clicked and dragged the firefox logo to the desktop, then it opened. the second problem i am now having which at the moment is more bothersome is that after i closed the lid to my laptop and opened it up again after a while and logged back in and noticed that the ENTIRE gnome 3 environment was gone. no panel no menu nothing just the desktop and a few desktop icons. i tried the command "yum install gnome-shell" but it just sed that gnome 2.31.5-7 .fc14.i686 was already installed so it wasnt gonna do anything, then i tried the "gnome-shell --replace" command and it just said

I've installed openSuse 11.4 server-mode (text only) on my desktop, and I'm trying to configure IceWM so i'll eventually have it set up so it always boots into text only mode, but I could be able to quickly start icewm via the command line.using Yast, I installed the Xorg server, and icewm.when I type X, the screen goes black and it just doesn't seem to do anythingI found if I hit ctrl+alt+f1 it kinda puts me back into text only mode, but I can't put in commands anymore. The last thing it says on the screen is:
Failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist, 0)
I've goggled that error message and the discussions that popped up around it made no sense to me at all. I've never configured X from scratch before, can someone point me towards a tutorial or something?
I cannot find the Xorg configuration file on my newly installed Debian on my tablet-pc, so I followed this tutorial [URL] and ran the command "Xorg -configure", to which I got the following error messages:

After 2 months away from Fedora i am using it again, and used yum update to update stuff, everything was running fine, downloaded stuff, but 2 of the 666 stuff to install got error, here is:

This morning I came into my office and turned my computer on, per usual, but found that after about 10 minutes of waiting, I was still only getting the blinking cursor of waiting.
Since Ctr-Alt-Del did nothing, I held the power button down on the computer, and started again. This time I entered GRUB and chose the recovery mode, hoping for a fix disc option or some such.
However, what I was faced with was an ATA error that pointed to hard drive errors. (I can't remember what the exact error was now) So I pulled out my 10.10 install cd and booted into that.
I ran the fsck command until it returned no more errors, and rebooted. I waited for the login screen to come up, and was dismayed when it did - only command line style.
So I logged in and ran startx hoping to at least get something to show up on my screen, when it failed and gave me these errors code...
I was disappointed.
I won't bore you with the tales of my googling exploits and all the other things I've tried so far because the list would get extensive. So I ask you: Any ideas?
