I have some software that I need to run as root, I know I can open a terminal and su etc. if I was going to stay there to control it, that would be fine, but as the software is graphical, I would like to click it's icon, be prompted for the root password, then have it start.

I'd like to run my Apache start-up script under my own userid and not have to su over to root each time in order to run it. But if I run the script as myself I get errors on the "/usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start" portion (which is the 'main' purpose of the script):
(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80
(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs
I don't care to waste anymore time just now, or spend anymore energy just now trying to resolve *those* problems. The script works fine when I execute it logged in as root (su). I've changed the permissions to 4777 so that *me* running the script that is executed *as root* should work:
ls -l apache_up.sh -rwsrwxrwx. 1 matt matt 1114 Jul 22 16:42 apache_up.sh But it still gives the above errors. I thought changing the sticky bit would work. How do I run this script myself and have it execute the "/usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start" command - so that I don't have to su each time?

I have a weird question about the sudoers file. Currently, I am running "Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 8)".
I edited the sudoers file (via visudo) and added the following:
User_Alias RPTS2 = vtmtest
RPTS2 xxxxx = (jboss) /oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh
The user (vtmtest) issues the following command
sudo /oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh
and gets this message:
user vtmtest is not allowed to execute '/oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh' as root on xxxxx
When I look at the log, I see the following:
Jan 25 14:17:57 xxxxx sudo: vtmtest : command not allowed ; TTY=pts/12 ; PWD=/export/home/vtmtest ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh
1. Why does sudo try to run as the root user, when I have specified in the command to run as jboss?
2. Do I need to specify anything else so that this command can run as the "jboss" user and not "root"?

There is a script that I want to run as root when the machine boots up(which starts the Redhat Certificate System services). The problem I have is if I put this on rc.local it wont run because I havent logged in as root. Is there a way that I can run this without logging in as root at the machine startup?

want to run VirtualBox with root permissions. Trouble is that only when run as root i can access attached USB devices inside of a virtual machine, otherwise, these a greyed out). Now running VirtualBox as a root user also changes the configuration folders, making all my virtual machines already defined disappear. I also don't want to copy all to the root configuration folders. Is there a way to give the VirtualBox root permissions but without actually running the application as a root user. Is it possible to do without changing the permissions of the non-root user, i.e. i don't want my user to have all root permissions, due to security considerations.

I finally got magicjack working under a winxp running on a vbox. But somehow I have to login as root and run the vbox as root. otherwise if I run the vbox as a normal user, I cannot mount the magicjack usb device, it appears as a grey disabled box. I am sure this is some kind of permission issue, but not sure how to grant the permission.

Is suid disabled from running all home made bash scripts or just from running them as root or:
Who would know for sure.
I googled several combinations of Mandriva Linux how-to suid disabled setUID etc... so far all I found was "many distributions are disabling suid for security reasons" nothing specific.

I login as normal user. I can 'su root' fine - password authenticates. However, If I try to run System->Administration->Users/Groups, when it asks for root password, it is rejected. When I run updater, it reports failure to authenticate, but doesn't even ask for root password beforehand. Is there a cached password someplace?

It might be a totally different angle i should look at this, but here goes.I can start the linux variant of teamviewer by writing teamviewer in the terminal, on the box. Fine.I can start it via /opt/teamviewer/ teamviewer/5/bin/teamviewer.If i connect to the box via ssh and putty, i still can run those commands but nothing happens. My goal in this is to be able to start teamviewer remotely via putty.

Problem: Whenever I try to use teamviewer it simply crashes. Weather I am trying to teamview someone or trying to get teamviewed, it crashes. I believe it is because of the ATI driver I installed. Before I had installed my ATI driver it wasnt crashing, ran perfectly fine. After installing though teamviewer would always crash. The same thing happened to my friend, and he has a completely different ATI card. Specs:
AMD Athlon 7550 x2 @ 2.6 Ghz
ATI Radeon HD 2600xt (my friend has a 4850)
3 GB RAM

I am overseas at the moment, and the wife has been having issues with my machine. After many hours of trying to to talk her through doing things, one of my geeks suggested installing Teamviewer and doing it myself.
I have SSH and WinSCP from work. I am using amd64 so the first attempt to install failed due to unmet dependencies. Then I read the MultiArch bit, installed ai32-libs and the install seemed to work. When my wife tried to start TV, it stated that the daemon was not running. When I try to restart the daemon, I get this.....
Code: Select allroot@Champs-Desktop:/home/champs# teamviewer --daemon restart
/etc/init.d/teamviewerd restart
Stopping teamviewerd... not running
Starting teamviewerd...method return sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> dest=:1.242 reply_serial=2

I have given support for my clients since 1985 and used "Remote Session", "Carbon Copy", "pcAnywhere", "TightVNC", and a few others. My choice of preference is to have a server I can trust under my supervision in order to avoid exposing my clients and friends private information from getting exposed? Using TeamViewer, an excellent product, does not secure both my files and theirs because when we connect, we are in their server and if they choose to, can interrupt, copy files, etc. during a remote session. Are there Linux versions for remote support available like TeamViewer that would be in my direct control?

configuring TeamViewer to start up 30 to 60 seconds after login.
At the moment, TV starts up straight away at login, but seeing as the wireless internet isn't connected straight away, TV's trying to connect without a connection, which is a problem when the wireless does connect as it will get stuck with 'Activating TeamViewer'.
Obviously, this is a straight forward task, just exit and then re-open TV. But seeing as I want to run a headless server, carrying my monitor and mouse to the server every time I want to activate TV isn't ideal.
The way I did set up TeamViewer to start up on login, was by dragging the icon into System>Preferences>Start-up Applications, so if the solution is to create a script of some sort.

I installed teamviewer and immediately skype went offline. Upon logging in to skype I get the following error:
"skype p2p connect failed"
So I rebooted pc, router, performed the command: "rm -rf ~/.Skype" to no avail. Next I removed teamviewer and tried everything again & still the message persists. Skype was set to not use port 80 already, but if it won't log on then I can't get to full the options menu.

Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit
Background...
I was working with TeamViewer 5 just fine and then saw that TeamViewer 6 was available. I performed a complete removal of TeamViewer 5 via the Synaptic Package Manager and then did a clean install of TeamViewer 6 by executing the new deb file.
TeamViewer 6 was added to the Main Menu just fine, but after rebooting my laptop, the TeamViewer 6 Main Menu launcher was gone and a broken link was there in its place.
I have since followed the solution in the below thread to get a valid TeamViewer 6 launcher back in the Main Menu, but I cannot get rid of the broken link.
[URL]
In the System->Preferences->Main Menu window, the broken link is basically frozen. I can't hide it or delete it. Is there some file I'm just going to have to update to get rid of it?

In maverick, I made a menu shortcut to be able to run nautilus as root (gksu nautilus), when I need to (for example, to clean the /var/apt/archives or anything like that). When I used this in intrepid, karmic or lucid, this worked fine.In maverick, when I do so, I always afterwards have the gnome desktop of root and still the rights of root outside nautilus. I have to logoff and re-login as my user to see my personal background and gnome environment again.

I have an external usb hard drive that spins down every 10 min. The commands in 'hdparm' do nothing to override the internal settings. So, I wrote a script to touch a file every 5 minutes, and it will run as root because of the mount command, and I want it to run for every user. The script is executable, owned by root, and root is the group, with 755 permissions.
no_sleep.sh in /usr/sbin:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
# Script to keep external drive from spinning down
diskmounted=$(mount | grep Backup | wc -c)
