I am currently in place where I get high speed internet connection. I am using F15 64 bit version. I've installed a lot of softwares and updated theOS completely. My question is is there any way that I can create a startup disk of my system so that I can install it in other system of same configuration.

Which address and which mirror image do I need to work with Kubuntu 11.04 on my netbook so I can create a USB startup disk? With my connection speed these mirror image downloads take about an hour and a half and I cannot just be guessing which mirror image to download.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy system decided to crash on me, hard. It was humming along happily for about 2 months and now doesn't boot. If I boot from hard-disk, I get grub. Launching the first kernel choice hangs. I thought maybe the install was corrupt, so I booted from usb install disk. The usb hdd didn't boot; something about an error trying to access /dev/sda . Unplugging the internal disk and plugging in the usb install disk does result in the system booting. Plugging in the internal disk in a running system usb-booted system does not result in the system detecting the disk.
How do I know if the disk is physically broken? This seems unlikely since it does manage to launch grub consistently. Or is this still possible? How can I try to mount whatever is left? The usb install disk doesn't even list the /dev/sd*. Any pointers on how to reformat the drive if it's not being mounted?
i want to start /usr/bin/brscan-key at startup. since i find it handy to push on the scan button , and the scanner is saving the scanned image to my pc.
can i add /usr/bin/brscan-key at /etc/rc.local on a safe way?

I am setting up a system for students to use to run lab-based exams. On bootup, the system needs to download an encrypted file containing the exam files, and then ask for a decryption password.
I want to do this during system startup (before anyone logs in). But I am having trouble getting keyboard input at this point.
I've put a script in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S99examsetup along the following lines:

but it doesn't respond to keyboard input. I have tried appending "< /dev/console" but this also doesn't work; in fact if I insert 'tty' before the first 'echo', it tells me that /dev/console is the tty being used for input anyway.
Is there a way round this? I can use plymouth ask-for-password, but that doesn't seem very portable, and it interacts badly with the graphics driver on one of my machines.

The nmb service *is* enabled at all of the relevant run levels and does start if I issue the command "service nmb start" as root after I log in. This particular box's networking is 802.11n via a usb port and is under the control of the network manager. I have another fedora 12 box with an internal intel 5100 802.11n card and it does not have this problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter yesterday system update the x server won't start up anymore. It locks immediately with blank screen leaving the computer unresponsible until hard reboot. I hat to once again go with the "vesa" driver, as I mentoined earlier in another thread it is a life saver, always works. My video card is integrated Radeon HD3250 - video driver was fglrx from ATI itself. "radeon" driver now reports that modesetting is not supported and will not load with EE-type X server error.
Anyone else experienced this? Are there any changes in the most recent X server that once again break compatibility with the official ATI driver?

I intend to create a file system but I'm having troubles because it show me an error after typing the command to create a filesystem:mke2fs �b 4096 /dev/sap (mke2fs �b 4096 /dev/<device>)The error finish with a message: "The device apparently does not exist; did you specify itcorrectly?"

I have a laptop with 1 hard drive (80gb)
I currently run CentOS 5.4 and I want to create an image of my current hard drive so that I can play it in a VM Player (VirtualBox).
What utility can I use to create a disk image? Also, Since i'm only using 20gb. I think I want to make a "sparse" file so that the image only takes up about 20gb.
Now... if there is an easier way to do this... let me know. I tried a few tutorials online with no progress. I spent all day yesterday trying to figure this out. Literally, all day.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhile installing Fedora 12, no devices were found on which to create file system (see attch.). I get the same message either on Live CD or DVD boot start. It looks like Fedora do not see my hdd. But Palimpsest can see my hard drive (see attch.)
Hdd is on my NForce 4 Ultra m/board and connected via "sata". Also I have raid controller on my board. But it is not in use: I turned it off in bios.
My software RAID setup is as follows.
/dev/md0 (made from sda1 and sdb1) RAID1 /boot partition
/dev/md1 (made from sda2, sdb2, and sdc2) RAID5 / partition
Earlier on I had some trouble with my sda drive, it dropped itself from both arrays, screwing up the mirroring of my two raid partitions participating in the /boot partition. I eventually got everything sorted out and back in sync. (I also have grub installed to MBR on both sda and sdb). Things are working fine regarding that, but since then I've had this issue:
During boot up, I'll get an error message that it could not mount my /boot partition (when fstab is set to either /dev/md0 or the UUID). It claims c9ab814c-47ea-492d-a3be-1eaa88d53477 does not exist!

As far as I know, it isn't neccessary for /boot to be mounted always, correct? Although, as I understand, I need to have it mounted whenever making kernel changes correct?

This is the third 9.10 install to do this on two different laptops, so wondering what's up...
In both cases, the goal was to leave a large chunk of unpartitioned disk after the Ubuntu partitions, for a second OS install or a filesystem Ubuntu cannot create like NTFS.
When I install with manual partitions, the system can't boot and asks for me to insert a system disk and press any key. When I reinstall telling Ubuntu to "use the entire disk" it then works.
First laptop, first try:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
First laptop, second try without the /boot partition:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
"use entire disk" works perfectly.
Second laptop, first try:
Same thing, non-system disk or disk error, insert system disk.
Second try "use entire disk" is currently in progress but I expect the same to happen.
I have never used Linux before and know nothing about it . But my cousin installed a Fedoro linux CD on my laptop which previously had Lotus symphony . Unfortunately my laptop had single partition and so Linux overrode the old OS ,ie lotus symphony .
I have some critical data on my hard disk but I have no clue how to take backup this data using Linux . I desparately need this data .
Could somebody let me know how I can access this data and take the backup ?

I did some research on-line, and I'm not sure which way is the easiest and more secure way to perform the change with out putting the "/" file system on risk.
