what is happening on my Centos virtual server (ps I'm having a great time re-learning Linux after a large gap and usually try and find out myself but this has me confused) First thing I did was install Tomcat and try and change the port to 80 using iptables -nat and it complained a kernel module was missing. Instead setup Apache to redirect requests so that's now working I then tried to install CSF firewall and the validation perl script returned fatal errors so I assumed OK my virtual server Kernel is restricted and used denyhosts instead which is working great
Here's the confusion.. I later retried the csftest script and it now works including all the iptables and nat stuff that fataled before. I've not rebooted or changed anything except run denyhosts and the postgres daemon + ended a few daemons that I didn't need (eg pickup,tlsmgr,courier,postfix,qmgr,saslauthd) Running lsmod returns nothing and /proc/modules is zero bytes so I'm not able to tell what is loaded? I'm tempted to try and get Tomcat redirecting via iptables and see what happens but if it works I don't like that something seems to have changed.. before I ran it direct as root now I'm SU into root from another login

This is the problem I run lspci -v which checks all drivers on my system and more. It says kernel driver in use is nouveau. Then under that it says kernel modules: nvidia recent, nvidia-96, nouveau, nvidiafb. So what it looks like I have 3-4 drivers for my video card loaded and one, nouveau, being used. I think they conflict with each other.
I'm trying to add drivers other then nouveau, because the mouse freezes with it. At this point I can't seem to get rid of nouveau, I go to terminal and type:
sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
And it says that it's not loaded so I can't dump it. lspci-v says nouveau is the driver being used and trying to dump it. It says it isn't installed. I'm confused. I want to dump nouveau, what should I do? I also go into Synaptic package manager and it isn't listed as being installed.
I have installed VMware (VMware-Player-3.0.1-227600.x86_64.bundle) on my laptop. When I open Vmware from Applications/System Tools/VMware Player.I get a window that says: VMware Kernel Module Updater Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel.When I click on install and after putting in my passwd.a window comes up with a list:

But it just try the first one and show an error (window) that says.unable to build kernel module see log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-9572.log for details.I cannot even go into the folder vmware-root because it says I do not have permissions even though am an administrator.
Used to work perfectly. I attempted to install VPN client, result is can't connect to anything. Networks are seen by network manager, nothing happens when click connect. Results below:

I am trying to setup Slacware 13.1 x86_64 to a encrypted partition. I used the README_CRYPT.TXT howto : [URL] At the step when I create an initrd.gz I get this error: Quote: ERROR: No /lib/modules/2.6.33.4-smp kernel modules tree found for kernel "2.6.33.4-smp"

I was trying to install VirtualBox through the YaST > Software Management but it is not working, someone in the forum told me that I have to download the OSE version and do it manual way. Finally I am able to start up VB but not able to use the network connection. Thus I am trying to do this:

When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to prevent a few modules from loading at boot, like i.e. bluetooth, sco, bnep, btusb, usb_storage and uvcvideo, so I blacklisted them in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf but they still get loaded. I've checked that I unload all of the ones depending on eachother so that shouldn't be the problem, I think. Does anyone know what I'm supposed to do to really prevent them from loading?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was using v 8.10. It came to its end of life and I felt compelled to upgrade. I upgraded to v 9.04. All seemed well, but then I discovered that I had no sound. As a test, I booted up with the v 9.04 CD, using it as a live CD. I had sound, so it seems as though it should be possible for me to have sound from my upgraded v 9.04 too, provided I can make the necessary changes to it.
When using the live CD and opening the volume control, I get as the listed device "HDA ATI SB (Alsa mixer)". That doesn't appear when I open the volume control using my upgraded v 9.04. Instead, it says "Playback: Null Output (PulseAudio mixer)". Also, when I check for loaded modules when using the live CD, I get many with snd in their name, but nary a one when using the upgraded 9.04.
Is there some simple way for me to load the same modules in the upgraded 9.04 as are loaded by the live CD? I tried to figure out the answer to this by reading other threads, but was simply overwhelmed by the volume of material and often wasn't sure to which version of Ubuntu it applied.
i am looked htop load CPU and it showed to me that kernel loaded CPU on 100%.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just compiled a new kernel. When I boot into this new kernel and do an lsmod it is only running two modules. The only thing I changed in the configuration file was to compile ext4 file system into the kernel. My computer is an HP Pavilion dv4. The two modules are lirc_ene0100 and lirc_dev. I am running Ubuntu 10.04. The new kernel is 2.6.32.15+drm33.5. The kernel seems to work fine but I need to know why and how it can only be running two modules.

It has internal storage and kernel assigns a device [/dev/sdX] to it.
Because of that, every second time my machine will not boot - kernel panic - as my usb hdd gets assigned /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sda.
I cannot use LABEL nor UUID in root= kernel parameter, as it is only available when using initrd, and I can't use it - I am using Debian on my router - mips architecture machine.
I have to prevent this from happening, as my router has to start everyday and I have to be sure it works ok. I don't have physical access to restart it when something goes wrong.
I don't use my modem internal storage, there's no SD card inserted. However kernel detects the reader and loads it.
I can not prevent loading od usb drivers since my hdd is on USB as well.
It has been years since I have need to compile the kernel or its modules. Here goes: I recently upgraded to ubuntu 10.10 and needed the kernel source and its modules source. The relevant directories are in a mess. Several diff versions, broken links, the works. Is there a nice easy way, to remove all of the sources, there, and err "install" the ones for my latest kernel, in the correct places. I'm trying to compile a kernel for my Crux Linux install. I figured I'd do a 'make defconfig' to setup a .config file with the default configuration and then try to add anything I will need for my specific system. I found a script that scans my system and prints out a list of any current modules I am using. That way I can make sure to add these to my new kernel. It looks something like this:

But the ones with short names I'm not finding. Like ac.ko for example. 'ac.ko' returns 0 search results and 'ac' returns anything and everything with those 2 letters in it.

I've been trying to load my pcmcia network card driver "xirc2ps_cs" at startup with no success. I have added "modprobe xirc2ps_cs" to the rc.modules file but it doesn't load at startup. Curiously, though, if I execute rc.modules AFTER the machine has booted it will load the modules just fine. Just not during the boot up process. Thinking that hotstart might have been causing problems I've disabled hotstart (chmod -x) temporarilly to remove it from the picture, but there was no change.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been looking forward to making the switch to Ubuntu for a while, but ever since I did, the road's been pockmarked with errors and hassles. That's, primarily, because I don't know what the hell I'm doing. Let me explain how I installed Ubuntu: All I did to install Ubuntu was download the file from the website and run the program. I didn't burn anything onto a CD or USB; I just clicked on the .exe file and let it run from there. Everything worked great - all I had to do was boot my laptop and choose from either Windows 7 or Ubuntu. Now, I had no idea how to watch videos, so I started to install a lot of stuff from the Synaptic Download Manager. Now, I don't know all of what I downloaded, but it was mainly games. The next thing I know, I get this page when I choose Ubuntu:
