I am looking for a default, or starting "exclude list" for system backups. We are currently using Symantec Backup Exec, but I also do not think that is important to this question. I would think that the Oracle "lock" files and the /var/run/*.pid files can be excluded from the backup, and probably the dell file also. Can some provide a list of files/directories that can be excluded (from backup) for RHEL 5?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to backup a whole startup disk to another with GRSYNC but I don't need some files or directories. For example, I don't want to backup my 'swapfile1' (I do not have a dedicated swap partition) or the 'media' directory' in order to no enter a looping sync.I've searched the web for the correct syntax of the --exclude command but none have worked if applied in the advanced option "before" rsync starts. These a sample of NOT workin syntaxes:
exclude /media or -- exclude 'media' or -- exclude "media"
same for swapfile1:
exclude swapfile1 or -- exclude 'swapfile1' or -- exclude "swapfile1"
Whenever I plug an external harddrive to a CentOS system,all partitions mounted will have noexec that makes my binaries or script files not executable.

I want that user can modify or upload already stored files. but, should not upload any unwanted files orfolders.for that i want to use "rm" command as auto scheduler (putting this in cron tab.so that all files will be removed except some required files / folders for which this upload facility is activated. users are using secure-shell for uploading data.

I'm formatting my laptop and I wanted to back up the list of PPAs I have installed as well as my list of applications currently installed. Problem is, it's a long list and I don't want to be stuck writing them all down.On another note, how's everyones Unity experience going? I have stumbled around Ubuntu 10.10 trying to find where to set this preference, but have had no success so far. In windows, you would set the preferred view and then apply to all folders. Ubuntu does not follow this paradigm, and indeed, why should it? I have searched the preferences in Ubuntu, and did a global search f this site for related topics. I know you have to be able to do this, I just don't know how. This is the type of topic I will probably kick myself for when someone shows me how easy it is to do. If you don't know how to do it though, it is still black magic.

If i had another machine with just installed ubuntu, it would be just as easy as list installed packages on two machines and then diff these lists. But i don't have another machine to clean install ubuntu on it. How can i do this without having clean ubuntu installation?

problem 1 : I can ssh to the required space but after the terminal prompts me for password it stops ececuting the script.
problem 2: after performing the 'exec' command for the first time. its not executing anything after that line. is there any work around for this.

Now I have to remove these files from the folder and retain others after 7 days. So I tried to write the below script with grep command.
find $directory -type f -mtime +7 | grep ack_reply
how can I pass this output to -exec command.
If I am not using grep command my script would be as

trouble when I log in the fedora as a normal user(not root) today. When I fill the username and the password press enter key. Then pop up a little window locate at topleft corner. And have one line message : "/usr/bin/xterm : Could not exec /bin/bash : Permission Denied"hen I log in as root, it's ok.
