Programming :: POP3 And Leave Messages On Server ?
Mar 10, 2010
According to RFC 1939: "POP3 is not intended to provide extensive manipulation operations of mail on the server; normally, mail is downloaded and then deleted." However most of the mail clients have that option "Leave messages on server" after they have been downloaded. How is it done?
I tried sniffing mail traffic with Wireshark, but the only POP3 provider I have is Gmail and its POP3 access is SSL secured, so I was unable to gather any info from this... I tried downloading sources of Thunderbird and Evolution and checked what are they doing with "leaving messages", but it seems my C++ skills are not enough - I was unable to understand what is happening when "leaving"...
Suggest me some POP3 provider, that is providing unsecured POP3 access, so I could try again reverse engineering with Wireshark?
I am using Evolution 2.30.2 and recently set it up with my Hotmail account. However, when it fetched my messages, they were deleted from the online server. I read somewhere that there is a 'leave messages on server' checkbox in Edit>Preferences>Mail Accounts>Edit>Receiving Options but it is not there.
I am looking for a mail app that will do this.I have a gmail account.I would like it to download the messages. but leave a copy on the server.i know some will delete the server messages.i would like to not bring down attachments, ever.i would like to only sync certain folders/labels from my gmail account.will evolution do this?i could not find options for any of these.
How can I download Mail from Dovecot POP3 Server to new Dovecot POP3 Server of all users and will always run every minute. I've tried fetchmail and getmail but only in one user and need to run fetchmail or getmail to retrieve new emails.
I am writing a client chat server program in java. The chat server is already written. I created the interface and I connected to the chat server. The server keeps sending protocol messages to whom ever is connected, also it keeps sending specific protocol every 10 sec to check if user is still online. My problem is when I connect from my interface to the chat server, the program gets stuck, I can not press any other button because after connection my program keeps receiving commands from server(I have a method to keep reading after connection). How can I keep track of messages sent from server and not get stuck i.e press other buttons or type in the interface?
I have a syslog-ng running and kernel build of 2.6.34.8 I use a syslog API in my program with facility LOG_LOCAL5 and and levels debug err and crit and info. when I ran on the older syslog facility I had everything logged fine as I intended. now I have written these rules into the syslog-ng.conf:
For long-term migration from courier to dovecot I would like to install courier-pop and dovecot-pop3d simultaneously. Aptitude offers me to install one, by removing the other, only. Can this be done without creating problems for the package manager and future upgrades? And why if not?
The following NEW packages will be installed:
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:
I'm trying implement a small server for a university work, my server is creating, binding and listening but it don't accept any connection, these are the files I'm using in server:
Code:
// Definition of the Socket class #ifndef SOCKET_H #define SOCKET_H #include <sys/types.h> code....
I've made a client just for test it, but no ones run well, the server is always returning -1 when accept is called!!
What should I do to send and receive messages in this server??
Recently while upgrading my email environment which was on postfix, POP and IMAP, server was crashed. We had to rebuild the new server and managed to restore everything from database but the during that process somehow users were not able to login using their old password hence we had to reset the password for every user manually. There were arnd 2500 users configured on the system. Now I have been asked not to put the newly built system into the production unless and until all the POP users and passwords are verified.I m thinking to write the bash script by which I can telnet to my POP server and then provide username and password to see the response
I am having problem to collecting email from remote POP3 (all the emails for a domain is stored here) and distribute it after collecting to several users defined to Linux server. I have install postfix in Linux server for email distribution.
I have been beating my head for the last few weeks on this problem, (although I have been taking the wrong approach, it seems).
I need a gateway to direct web traffic to three separate servers/domains. I have been trying to do this with both a dns server and , (seperatly), apache server to forward requests. The dns server was a no go, and <i can only get apache to redirect http and ftp.
After Googling this ALOT, I believe that what I need is a gateway server to redirect my traffic to the 3 different servers. I have been reading about using using nat and iptables for this and was wondering if anyone had any advice/suggestions on this. The other thought I had was to use something like pfSense to create the gateway, but I am still reading the documentation, and I am unsure if this approach will work.
I want to give a try to Evolution mail client (I use v 2.30.3) and I've set up my account, but see no reference to how long messages are left on the server (like in Thunderbird you have the option to leave messages for a fixed period of time, after they are automatically deleted).Any clue on this? (Maybe it is a stupid post, but before doing this I searched a little and nothing)
Our mailing systems was working in web mail and we had a tool wherein if we apply leave mails where sent to web mail. Now we have moved to exchange server and we want the mails to be sent to exchange server. The Leave Management systems is developed in PHP with Mysql the platform used is linux.
I am trying to install Mozilla Thunderbird email client. When I configure this program, it defaults to IMAP4-type incoming mail server (Port 143) instead of POP3 (Port 110) which my ISP uses. I did not see POP3 anywhere in the available dialog boxes. Is there any way to get Thunderbird to use POP3 in opensuse 11.2 Gnome Edition?
I'm a newbie here but I have a question on how to make the connection between webmin and thunderbird via POP3. I have webmin set up and it is able to send and receive mail via webmin but when I enter the account details in thunderbird it cant find the settings for my mail account. I'm not exactly sure where I need to go in webmin to set it up to allow a connection from a client to allow the downloading of mail to the client. Would simply prefer to go to thunderbird to send and receive mail as opposed to logging into webmin then going to my mail.
running debian 6.0 "Squeeze" I installed Evolution trough official debian squeeze mirrors, installed all available updates (that know off) but i still can connect to my POP3 (email) server.what does evolution need to connect to pop3 ? when use Kmail, everything works fine
My server listens to POP3/IMAP requests. Some users have configured their mailers with high checking frequencies, say once every minute, such that the system logs are full of entries with no significance at all.I'd like to ask if there is a way to limit the per IP frequency of POP3/IMAP access ?I'm using "xinetd" to wrap the "ipop3d" and "imapd" which come with the Alpine package.
i've been tryin to configure sendmail with cyrus to create a mail server that'll allow outlook users to connect to and download mails. I've done a lot of googling but so far no success have been able to configure sendmail with cyrus but can't connect the outlook to the server. I've come across certain documentation that says it requires to configure saslauthd. Is there any way i can create a mail server to which users can connect and download their mails. Shall i switch to postfix and dovecot instead? Is that easier?
I've recently migrated my office PCs to ubuntu. My server doesn't server any big purpose but to provide Internet Connection to the rest of the nodes. Things were quite easier during the windows era using ICS.
Even in Ubuntu we were able to do it using the "shared network" option, simple & straight forward. But things got complicated only after installing "squid". Needless to say it brought in a lot of add ons as far as the http proxy serving is concerned & we are enjoying a better internet(http only) connectivity without any doubt. But we are not able to use our email clients, MS Outlook or Thunderbird
But to best of my knowledge squid strictly is a http proxy hence doesn't support handling requests on ports other than 80. (465 & 995 in my case)
Now I have two queries, 1. Can "Squid" really be used to do what I want here??? using iptables, port forwarding or any other mean & 2. Can any one suggest a good pop3/imap proxy as good as squid is.
I want to retrieve emails from my POP3 servers to my home server. But from there, I want to be able to access them via IMAP from my other computers, i.e. desktop, laptop, phone. And then of course I want to be able to send emails from said devices via IMAP to my home server which POP3's them out to my mail servers. Basically, I have a few POP3 accounts with various hosts and I want to conveniently interact with them from lots of devices using my preferred software (i.e. Mutt, or Thunderbird on my Windows boxes). My home server is Ubuntu Server if that's relevant.

i have some problems to start my dovecot server. I tried to install it from webmin using "un-used modules" but it was allways the same error: "E: Unable to locate package dovecot-pop3d".When I tried to install it from console using the commands: apt-get install dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d dovecot-common - and there are no problems with dovecot-imapd and dovecot-common, but still the same error with dovecot-pop3d. After command: service dovecot status: could not access PID file for dovecot ... failed! After try to start dovecot with comand "dovecot": Error: mail_executable: Can't use /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3: No such file or directoryFatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.confI've read a few similar threads in this forum about dovecot errors but still can't to fix it.
I'm trying to configure dovecot in RHEL6, but seems system won't accept local user login. I've already disabled pam. I've tried mutt -f imap://xxxx, and Thunderbird to connect as imap and pop3, but both failed, seems dovecot won't accept the password of the login user.the dovecot info log as, Jul 03 20:48:42 imap-login: Info: Disconnected: Too many invalid commands (no auth attempts): rip=192.168.1.3, lip=192.168.1.3, mpid=0, secured
I had installed opennms im getting email alert when all port are getting down and i also getting pop and imap messaage to whn th eport get dwn i want to stop asap mesage of pop3 and imap..whether its poasssible to block partilar imap and pop3 port .
My actual mail is via pop3 from verizon. What I've done so far is just pull my pop3 mail onto my main machine at my house. But I'm finding I'd rather have a single imap server on my network so then all my machines could see the same mail.
I don't really want the imap server to poll verizon for mail, I just want the imap server to check pop3 mail at verizon only when one of my mail apps checks into it to look for mail.
I'm installing Lotus Domino on Linux Server. Did anyone know how to reverse proxy for HTTP and POP3/IMAP on linux ? I've problem when try to open webmail from internet. I can't access webmail and POP3 from internet. Seems because connection from internet can't directly to Domino through Firewall. If using apache seems no problem with the webmail, but POP3 still can't access.
Having my Diploma Final Project on setting up a virtual mail server within Local Area Network (LAN) only. I had follow this how-to [URL] and complete up to squirrealmail web mail. I added two new user to try on sending and receiving mail. It works. I run CentOS on VMplayer. I using my laptop to do all the stuff, the laptop default OS is windows 7, I install VM player on it and run CentOS inside the VM Player.
I want to do testing on Windows 7 side by installing Thunderbird email client program, I want to connect to mail server with SMTP, IMAP/POP3 using the email service. I have problem while setting up user account on Thunderbird, Thunderbird seems like cannot detect my CentOS mail server. How? Do I have to do any other configuration on CentOS? Any DNS? Port number for IMAP, POP3 or SMTP?
