Fedora Installation :: New Install With Only LXDE

Jan 14, 2009

I've tried to do a clean install of F10 on one of my pcs. I deselected Gnome and only selected LXDE. But after the installation-proces finished and I did a reboot, I only got a commandline in which I only was able to log into as root. No LXDE. Nor did the command "startx" start X. to my surprise. On another pc I did an install of F10 with Gnome and later on I've installed LXDE. After a reboot I was able to select LXDE in gdm. But how can I get a clean install of F10 with only LXDE? What am I missing here?

Debian Hardware :: LXDE With Nvidia Card - Trying To Change Resolution

Oct 4, 2014

Currently my display is set to 1280x960 at 60Hz, but my monitor supports 1920x1080, which is what I would like to have. Preferences -> Monitor Settings (lxrandr) does not change anything & does not show my desired resolution either. I tried using the Nvidia propietary drivers but whenever I try to switch to them from xorg.conf the X display can't start. right now I am using the nouveau driver. I've seen some xrandr commands but so far haven't been able to figure out what I need to do.

I am on Debian 7.6.0 (Wheezy) amd64:
Code: Select all$ uname -rms
Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 x86_64

I installed my system from the LXDE live media.

My graphics card is the NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 (NV18).

lspci output:
$ lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x] (rev c1)

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Blinking LXDE And Gnome - Fresh Install - Graphics Resolution Is Wrong?

Apr 7, 2011

I've borrowed a copy of 11.4 DVD install disc from someone at work, everything went fine install wise. Except Grub taking control, which I didn't ask it to, but easy fix with yast, problem is firstly my graphics resolution is wrong, but I'm trying to work that one out myself as it always seems to be happening with distros I use on my machine. The weird thing is my desktop blinks! Every 10secs or so the whole screen goes blank and then reappears? I thought it might be the wrong refresh rate, but that's at 60Hz which is correct, would it be the resolution problem?

My hardware:-
P4 2.8
1Gb ram
Geforce FX 5500
Dell 1703FP monitor

I was trying to running diagnostic's from Opensuse, but the blinking was getting on my nerves and I'm not familiar with a non Debian based OS......yet! I've got compiz and all running on the hardware in my Ubuntu install after editing the xorg.conf, could I simply copy that to my Opensuse install?

Fedora :: Gnome 3 - How To Change Key Binding

Jun 28, 2011

I'm slowly coming to terms with Gnome 3 but one thing I can't get used to is using the "Windows Key".

For me it's a difficult key to use regularly. What I'd rather to is remap the "Switch between overview and desktop" action to alt-space, which I am used to from "Launchy" which I have been using in Windows for some time.

A couple of issues though - this is already mapping to "Activate the window menu". I never use it though. Are there any implications of remaping it?

Secondly, what is the command I need to map the key to, in order to emulate the Gnome 3 "Windows Key" behaviour?

Fedora :: Change The Gnome Menu Icon?

Feb 18, 2009

After much Google-ing and headaches I finally found out how to change the Gnome Menu Icon in F10. I love the Echo Icon theme, but I hate that Pac Man main menu icon. I had to get rid of it. Here's how to change that icon--and even to replace the standard "Infinity" icon with a much nicer version--or even switch that out for something totally different.

First, enable GUI root logon. This makes copying/pasting the icon to the protected icon folder much easier. Here's how [URL]When you have completed that, log out. When you get to the GDM login choose "Other" enter "root" in Username and then your root password. Now you're logged in as root.

Go to USR/Share/Pixmaps and there are a few nice Fedora icons. There's the "Infinity" logo but it's a much nicer, shinier version of the standard one. It's called "fedora-logo-sprite". But if you're feeling adventurous then try--as I did--"fedora-logo-small", which is the fedora name and a small "Infinity" logo (there's also the "Powered by Fedora" icon too). Copy one of those and paste it to Home or Desktop, or wherever you want. You just want to put it somewhere to stage. Now change the name to "start-here".

Now go to /USR/Share/Icons/(name of icon set using)/24x24/places/ and remove the "start-here" icon (send to Trash). Go to where you staged your replacement icon, copy it, go back to the /USR/Share/Icons/(icon set used)/24x24/places/ folder and paste it. Be sure to empty the Trash Can before you log off as Root User. Log off/ log back on as "you" and the icon should appear. I used the "Fedora (Infinity)" logo as Main Menu instead of the Menu Bar and it works great. The "Powered by Fedora" icon would look great too.
