I had a play with Linux some while ago, but could never find one that worked with my computer. I know have one that worked, well so far. Haven't sorted out the printer as yet though. I am trying to locate the application for links onto the desktop. eg. Want to put Opera browser linked to the desktop, or have to locate the application for things to work.

To start apps during boot, I use two different methods: The .xinitrc file in /home/dan works fine under: "Add your own lines here..." Startup Applications in Gnome | System works well as well. Here, I can enter nautilus /dir and nautilus starts up just fine in that directory. But as I mentioned, I have yet to find a way to direct the program to run in a different desktop other than #1.

When Desktop Effects are enabled in KDE the window for Tecplot 'bleeds' through, as if ~40% transparent in various regions. Disabling desktop effects fixes this, however, I would like to keep them. Is there a way to disable desktop effects on a single window/application?

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen in Chrome or Firefox periodically I want to place a shortcut to a web page on my desktop. To do this I click on the button just to the left of the address and drag it up to the desktop. Sometimes this works but more often this creates a copy of the HTML page. And if the web page is HTTPS I get an error. I can drag to the Bookmarks Bar and it copies the link fine. Then I can drag it from the Bookmarks Bar to the desktop. I know I can create a launcher for the web page on my desktop but that's a lot of trouble. Why would dragging to the desktop work sometimes and not others? Are there any work arounds or fixes? I am using Ubuntu 10.4, Chrome 6.0.472.53 and FF 3.6.10.

The monitor configuration app always want the primary monitor to be on the left hand side, thus it always extend my desktop right. View 8 Replies View RelatedAt my Uni, we use a web-based login for our internet connections. Its based off of Cisco, and every Wednesday night every computer on campus must re-enter their credentials to use the network.
Normally on my several computers I simply pull up the Terminal, point links to google.com using

And enter my credentials when Cisco redirects to the login page.
Literally, the process is

Then ENTER to accept the redirect, down arrow to skip over the logo image, USERNAME, ENTER, PASSWORD, ENTER, ENTER.
Naturally, this is EXTREMELY time consuming, as I have about 5 computers located around campus and must physically walk to the machines and login every single week.
My question is, How would I formulate a program that does the following;
1) checks for connectivity (i.e. is able to reach/resolve to the greater part of the internet) and
2) automatically fills in the credentials on the links login page?
I have a personal wiki of notes, with now thousands of links in markdown format:

but now that fckeditor is available for mediawiki (very beta), it has become much better to just stick with wikitext format. There are only a few conversions to do: tables, links, and bulleted lists. The lists are a fairly simple regex and fckeditor magically reformats the tables, so all I'm left with is the links. But I'm not a regex master. How do I reformat code...
I've downloaded VideoLan (VLC) via Yast but the icon was placed in the audio folder. How do I move it to the video player folder? Also, where are additional icons stored? I run SuSE 11.2 (boxed version) with KDE.

Left clicking and selecting "open in browser" also doesn't work.I checked in Firefox to make sure I had it set as my default browser, but when I click on an html file it opens in Konquerer. I've install virtualbox and got it working.In KDE, the normal Alt-F2 -> virtualbox will start virtualbox. However, when I login to openbox or fluxbox, I am unable to get virtualbox started.Curious, re-login into KDE and virtualbox can be started as normal.However, in konsole, when I try to locate virtualbox, I am unable to locate it.Any idea how to locate and start virtualbox in fluxbox, openbox?

I have check all my settings and they seem to be fine. Firefox is default browser, clicking a link should open a new tab in Firefox
but id does not work.
What happens is that when I click a link it starts/opens Firefox but with empty address bar.
I need to manually copy link location and paste it manually in Firefox.
What to do to fix it?
I use Audacity quite a lot for conversion of a voice recorder, to convert WMA to FLACWhen I used it Mar 24 it worked, when used it Mar 26 it didn't.I used the locate pointed it to libavcodec.so.52 like it had there & it tells me it can't find it! At first I thought it was an update I'd done from the Packman reposonly when I went to Yast to revert only the most recent update was in there, no prior versions. Yet I Know that ffmpeg was among the updates it was blue when I did it then.Other distro's don't have this problem only Suse who or where or what should I do so that Audacity works in Suse again?

When I run the 'wget' command that it tells me to run, it seems like everything goes fine. But I can't see the repo in YaST > Software Repositories. I ran the command on Friday last week so I don't have the exact output from which I ran this command the first time.

Sure enough, a handful of other services stopped as well.Now I have almost recovered the PC from this foolish mistake of mine, the only problem I seem to be stuck with is I am now unable to locate the computer on my LAN by hostname ... does anyone know which service I should restart please (if it helps, the computer can resolve DNS names such as Google.com OK)?
